Art reflects Wichita State student's journey from Japan

The Rhatigan Student Center Gallery is hosting “A Sojourner’s Journey,” a drawing and painting exhibit by Wichita State University student Chiyoko Myose that started Monday, Jan. 26, and runs through Friday, Feb. 6.

Admission is free.

A reception for the artist is scheduled from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, in the skylight lounge area of the RSC.

Chiyoko, born and raised in Japan, moved to America 13 years ago. Her work expresses her personal experiences and thoughts as “a sojourner” using the shape of a square, which implies the notion of a foundation she longs for.

Although Chiyoko’s work is highly personalized, it also applies to a more universal theme. She hopes her exhibit will evoke people’s awareness of other cultures and also engage people who deal with similar issues as hers.

“Many people are sojourners in one way or another,” she said.

Chiyoko earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature in Japan and received a second bachelor’s degree in studio arts from WSU by taking courses as a nontraditional student.

Her works have been accepted and exhibited at the state and national level juried competitions. She also has recently been awarded a Koch Cultural Trust Enabling Grant to attend the International School of Painting, Drawing and Sculpture in Umbria, Italy.

This RSC Gallery show is her first solo exhibition.

Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, and 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. For more information, contact the RSC Activities Office at (316) 978-3495 or visit www.wichita.edu/rscgallery.
