WSU Jazz Arts 1 and WSU Madrigal Singers will present their Sixth Annual Valentine Jazz Concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, in Miller Concert Hall.

The music will feature traditional big band selections such as “Fly Me to the Moon” and “The End of a Love Affair.”

The Jazz Arts I ensemble, led by associate professor Tom Fowler, will leave on a tour to Kansas City immediately following the concert. Their tour program includes crowd pleasers such as “Nica’s Dream” and “Captain Perfect.”

The Madrigal Singers will step out of their traditional classical style to prepare a few vocal jazz ballads, such as “Since I Fell for You” and the Billy Joel crossover song “Lullaby (Goodnight, My Angel).”

Tom Wine

A fresh presentation of the Beach Boys classic “God Only Knows” is an example of how pop music is moving into new idioms, said Tom Wine, professor and director of choral activities. The group also will be belting out a few up-tempo jazz favorites including “Johnny One Note” and “I Could Write a Book.”

One of the traditions that will continue is the opportunity for some students to step out as soloists in front of the group. The evening will highlight Valentine-themed favorites “Too Close for Comfort” and “My Funny Valentine.”

It is a fun evening of entertainment for dates of all generations. For more information, contact Fowler or Wine in the School of Music at (316) 978-3103. For more information about WSU’s choirs, go to www.wichita.edu/choirs.
