Shocker Rowing wins state Governor's Cup

The Wichita State University rowing team took first place in every event except the novice women’s four to win the Governor’s Cup at the Sunflower State Championships, beating the University of Kansas and Kansas State University.

The traveling event was hosted by WSU.

The women’s varsity four was the delight of the day, taking the win from KU, which had beaten the previous weekend.

Coxswain Lisa Burns and rowers Kacie Laha, Kim Calaman, Melissa Koehn and Stephanie Lillie finished the race in 4:04.7.

“I’ve been racing these girls (KU) since last year where they came in third to our fourth last year at nationals,” said Lillie. “I really wanted to hand them a win. Finally.”

WSU’s novice women’s four also had a surprise ending. They started the race in the lead, but dropped eventually to KU. WSU still finished ahead of K-State.

Shocker men’s boats all brought home gold.

The team now spends two weeks at home gearing up for nationals Saturday and Sunday, May 23-24.
