Manuel Osorio, a recent graduate of Maize High School, has been named the 2009 Davis-Moore Scholarship recipient. Osorio will receive $3,000 a year for four years, for a total of $12,000.

Osorio was chosen as the scholarship recipient for his commitment to education and for being an active student and community member.

Dawson Grimsley, president of Davis-Moore, said Davis-Moore is pleased to offer the scholarship.

"It makes sense," said Grimsley. "The community has been supportive of us over the years, and this is one way to pay it forward."

The winner is chosen by a scholarship committee, drawing from the general scholarship pool. The guidelines stipulate the student must be from Kansas and active in school and community. The hope is that these students will carry on the commitment to the community and its youth as they become future leaders and successful adults.

"In these tough economic times, it is wonderful to see the generosity of our business community promote the future of our young scholars and prepare them to be our leaders in the future," said Wade Robinson, vice president for Campus Life and University Relations.

Osorio said, "My parents, wanting a better future for my family and me, saw that there were not many opportunities for a Hispanic minority student in Los Angeles, and so they made a decision to move us from a city of glamour and fame to a city where we would find the necessary tools to succeed."

Beverly Crowe of Maize High School said: "I most appreciate the fact that I can always count on Manny to follow through on whatever he promises. If he says he'll help sell egg rolls at our fundraiser, then I know he'll be there. If his job requires contacting students to sing at the nursing home, then I can be assured the students will be contacted. I don't have to worry about the planning for a field trip to the Nelson Atkins Art Museum in Kansas City if Manny is in charge."
