Media representatives are invited to talk with the first participants in the StoryCorps project from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum, 204 S. Main.

KMUW 89.1 Wichita Public Radio will host the project’s mobile recording booth from Oct. 22-Nov. 14.

The first recording will be at 10:30 a.m. that Thursday, when Eric Sexton, athletics director at Wichita State University, interviews his father, Linwood Sexton. At 12:30 p.m., Lana Bennett will interview Hispanic community activist Rita Chavez. These participants and StoryCorps facilitators will be available for questioning, and media representatives can also tour the mobile booth.

Linwood Sexton graduated from Wichita University in 1948 with a bachelor’s in education and then began his teaching career. He was active in the community and served on many boards, including the Kansas Board of Regents.

Sexton won the Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews for his fight for equal opportunity and social justice. His campaign for better access to educational opportunities for minorities inspired an anonymous WSU alumna to establish the Linwood Sexton Scholarship Fund in 1989 for minority students pursuing a degree in education.

Chavez married at 17 and moved to Lawrence start a family. When she became involved in the PTA on behalf of her children, she discovered her passion for community work and activism. Her talents attracted attention, and she began to work as a liaison for the Hispanic community in Wichita.
