View a meteor shower at the observatory Dec. 14

The Geminids meteor shower will start becoming visible around Sunday, Dec. 6. Come to the Lake Afton Public Observatory to watch it peak just after midnight Monday, Dec. 14.

The observatory will be open from 11 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13 to 1 a.m. the next day. In honor of the meteor “shower,” anyone who comes out to the observatory with some form of appropriate shower attire – a rain coat, an umbrella, a bar of soap, a towel, etc. – will receive $1 off admission.

The Geminid meteor shower occurs annually when the earth passes through material left behind by an asteroid called 3200 Phaethon.

Lake Afton Public Observatory is operated by the Fairmount Center for Science and Mathematics Education, a part of the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Science at Wichita State University.
