Wichita State University’s Spero program will welcome its newest participants and reconnect members of its growing community during the 2026 Spero Kickoff on Friday, Aug. 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Woolsey Hall.
The event will bring together current Spero students, alumni, employer partners, advisory board members, facilitators, guest speakers and supporters for an afternoon of connection and celebration. A buffet lunch will be provided.
Spero, Latin for “hope”, is an initiative of the Barton School of Business designed to help individuals build lasting independence through practical education, professional development and access to meaningful employment opportunities.
“The kickoff is an opportunity to welcome our newest students while recognizing the employers, alumni and community members who make Spero possible,” said Larisa Genin, dean of the Barton School. “Every person in the room contributes to a network committed to helping participants strengthen their skills, pursue new opportunities and create a more prosperous future.”
Guests may arrive beginning at 11:30 a.m. for networking and a meet and greet with Spero students. Group photos will begin at 11:45 a.m. and will include the Spero team, advisory board members, current students, alumni, employer partners, facilitators and guest speakers. The formal welcome and program will begin at 12:15 p.m.
Spero offers market- and employer-oriented learning through its Career Readiness and Entrepreneurship programs. The Career Readiness program helps participants develop competencies sought by regional employers, while the Entrepreneurship program provides practical guidance for individuals working to launch or grow a business.
Participants also benefit from access to mentors, business leaders, facilitators and organizations committed to supporting their continued development. Graduates earn Wichita State University credit and micro-credentials recognizing the skills they developed through the program.
Since its launch, Spero has created a growing network of students, alumni, employers and community advocates. The annual kickoff provides an opportunity for those groups to build relationships, share experiences and prepare for the program year ahead.
Attendance is open to members of the Spero community, including alumni, employers, advisory board members, facilitators, guest speakers and supporters. Reservations are required.
Guests should RSVP at https://tally.so/r/jaqr0R. The registration form will request attendance confirmation, dietary restrictions or food allergies, and the guest’s name, company and title. For additional information, contact the Spero team at Spero@wichita.edu.
