Wichita State sets record for research and development awards
Wichita State University set a new record for total research and development awards in fiscal year 2018 with a total of $104.5 million, increasing awards by more than $14 million and achieving gains in most funded departments. This is the first time the university has achieved greater than $100 million in research awards in its history.
This increase is a direct result of strategic efforts of the Office of Research to increase the exposure of grant opportunities available through industry and government agencies and to facilitate the development of strong proposal submissions.
Increasing research activity is critical to Wichita State's strategic plan and vision to be internationally recognized as the model for applied learning and research. Wichita State increased its industry and federal awards by more than $3 million each.
AG Derek Schmidt, Sunshine Coalition to offer free training on open government laws
A free training session on Kansas open government laws will be offered from 9 a.m.-noon Thursday, Aug. 23, in the Marcus Welcome Center. The training was announced Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt and the Kansas Sunshine Coalition for Open Government.
“Open access to the functions of government is important to self-government,” Schmidt said. “As our office investigates complaints of violations of open government laws, most often we find the violations were inadvertent and can be avoided through better education. I encourage public officials, candidates for public office, staff, members of the media and the public to participate in these training sessions to learn more about how these laws work.”
The seminar is free and open to the public. Space is limited, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants can register on the Kansas Attorney General's website, Kansas Attorney General's website or call 785-296-2215.
The training about the Kansas Open Records Act and the Kansas Open Meetings Act will be conducted by attorneys in Schmidt's office who have experience in open government laws and who are charged by law with training and enforcement of them. Panelists will include Kansas Sunshine Coalition members, local government officials and media representatives.
WSU Weekly Briefing to feature initiatives to help students feel welcome
Programs and initiatives to make students feel welcome will highlight the WSU Weekly Briefing set for 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, in the Marcus Welcome Center.
Alicia Newell, assistant vice president, Assessment and Student Retention, Student Affairs, will discuss initiatives for the start of the fall semester on Monday, Aug. 20. Tracee Friess, director of communication for research and technology transfer, will give the overall university update.
The briefing will be live streamed and available later that day at Weekly Briefing. There will be time for questions at the end of the briefing.
'Dealing with Government Contracting Officials – What can you really say and do?'
Interactions with federal Contracting Officers are part and parcel of government contracting, but many traps exist for the unwary. The presentation -- “Dealing with Government Contracting Officials: What can you really say and do?” -- covers the do's and don'ts of dealing with Contracting Officers, including proposal discussions / negotiations, change orders and directives, ethical rules and restrictions, and much more. Packed with real-life examples and practical tips, this seminar will leave government contractors better educated -- and more confident -- in their dealings with the government.

The presenter will be Steven Koprince, government contracts and small business law attorney. His practice focuses on helping small businesses navigate the federal marketplace, and he is a regular speaker and author on the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), the SBA affiliation rules, and other legal matters important to small government contractors. Koprince has spoken at industry and professional events across the country, and has been quoted by the Washington Post, NBC News and other news outlets.

University Libraries to offer ‘How to File: Patent Electronic Systems'
We invite you to join us for a series of virtual programs provided by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on understanding intellectual property (IP) basics from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, in 217 Ablah Library. Part IV in the series will focus on filing your patent application using the Electronic Filing System-Web (EFS-Web) and managing your patent application online using Patent Application Information Retrieval (PAIR) system. The presentation will consist of an interactive tutorial, description of various assistance resources such as the Inventor's Assistance Center (IAC) and the Patent Electronics Business Center (EBC).

Shockers picked first in preseason American poll
The Wichita State volleyball team is picked first in the 2018 American Athletic Conference
Preseason Coaches Poll. The Shockers received six first-place votes and 113 points
in the poll.
Last year, the Shockers went 20-0 in their inaugural season in The American.
The Shockers return nine letterwinners and three starters from a team that went 29-4
overall and 20-0 in American Athletic Conference play in 2017. Last season, the Shockers
earned the No. 16 overall seed and hosted the first and second rounds of the NCAA
Tournament for the first time in school history.
Cincinnati and Temple were picked to finish second and third in the poll.
