Wichita State is studying the potential of motorized scooters on campus

Statement from Chief Rodney Clark, WSU Police Department:

We're taking a serious look at how to safely and legally allow motorized e-scooters on the Wichita State campus. The safety of students, employees and visitors is always our top priority.

We know from increasing usage around the country that these scooters are fun and convenient. We also know they present safety hazards to their riders, pedestrians, motorists, and property. When you put a motor on something, it changes everything.

We have begun to research e-scooter experiences elsewhere, and will be especially interested in the results of the current pilot program by the city of Wichita.

This fall we expect to have a draft of a definitive university policy on e-scooter use, based on laws and advice from representatives of student, faculty and staff senates, as well as the public. We invite people with e-scooter experiences and ideas to share them with us by email at police@wichita.edu.

RSVP today for community campus visit on July 31

Community Campus Visit July 29, 2019

The majority of Wichita State alumni in the Wichita area graduated when it had the reputation as a commuter school. Several community members and educators have a familiarity with Wichita State, but few know about the opportunities we share with our prospective student population. In the past few years, our campus has become a place of dynamic growth with new buildings and programs aimed to preserve the legacy of Shocker Nation and continue to build on it.

In an effort to update perceptions of our campus, our office is hosting a special campus visit for the community, alumni and educators in the Marcus Welcome Center at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 31. As part of the event, attendees will hear from our staff about the updates and plans for the future, take a tour of campus with current students, enjoy refreshments and even take home some Shocker swag.

Click here by Monday, July 29, to RSVP for the tour.

Join the GiveCampus campaign in support of the Ulrich Museum

GiveCampus campaign for Ulrich

The Ulrich Museum needs your support! Through the GiveCampus campaign, we have until Saturday, Aug. 31, to reach our goal of raising $6,000 for our bus reimbursement program.

The program helps us bring students to the Ulrich Museum each year from all over the Wichita and surrounding areas. Many of these students likely would not have an opportunity to visit an art museum otherwise. Please help us reach this goal—and support a worthy cause!

Coming to an arena near you

Brad Pittman feature

In March, Mike Ross sat on the baseline at Tulsa's BOK Center and watched NCAA Tournament men's basketball. Brad Pittman watched on TV from his home.

The calls and texts sailed back and forth, not about dunks and buzzer-beaters. The games are secondary to their scrutiny. Why is that water-cooler placed in a potentially dangerous path? Should someone sweep the court more often?

They are planning for March 2021 when the tournament returns to Intrust Bank Arena.

In those type of details, a successful tournament exists.

Pittman, who serves as tournament director when NCAA basketball comes to Wichita, is Wichita State's chief planner, greeter and salesman for connecting to those type of events. Two successful bids for NCAA men's basketball and two for the women highlight those efforts for Pittman, recently promoted to senior associate athletic director for facilities and operations, and the university.

RH: Taylor aces Bottle Cap Challenge

Nick Taylor

Hitting the bottle cap is not the hard part for Nick Taylor, who directs tennis balls at targets quite often as one of the world's best Paralympics tennis players.

Accuracy is his best attribute.

He proved that in a video, shot as part of the bottle cap challenge, that shows him smacking a tennis ball to hit the lid of a Gatorade bottle and lift it off. The bottle, filled with water, remains standing.
