WSU students win innovation award at Consumer Electronics Show
Prenatal Hope VivO2, a noninvasive fetal oxygen detection device created by Wichita State student Tammy Dorsey, continues to attract significant attention in significant technology places.
VivO2 earned a 2020 Innovation Award at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month. ClearObject.com named VivO2 one of its top three things to see at the show, a six-day gathering of industry professionals from around the world.
Founder and CEO Tammy Dorsey and co-founder and CTO James Balman are Wichita State Master of Innovation Design students. Both attended CES, which attracted around 170,000 attendees.
You are invited to CCHT's 6th Annual Anti-Trafficking Conference featuring Gretchen Carlson
You are invited to the WSU Center for Combating Human Trafficking’s (CCHT) 6th Annual Anti-Trafficking Conference on Friday, Jan. 31, in Hughes Metropolitan Complex.
This year’s theme is “Context Matters: Confronting a Culture of Exploitation,” broadening the focus to take an in depth look at the various “-isms” and cultural contributions that create opportunity for abuse, exploitation to occur.
The headlining speaker will be Gretchen Carlson, who made international news in 2016 when she sued Roger Ailes, CEO of Fox News. Since that time, she has continued to shed light on the epidemic of sexual harassment and to provide education and resources for victims and survivors. Individual tickets to hear Gretchen are available at www.wichita.edu/bethebombshell.
The afternoon keynote will be Rafael Bautista. He serves as an expert consultant for the Office for Victims of Crime Training and Technical Assistance Center and the National Human Trafficking Training and Technical Assistance Center.
We are thrilled to welcome Gretchen Carlson and Rafael Bautista to Wichita. Gretchen offers a personal perspective of navigating and challenging systems of abuse and silence in a moderated Q&A. Rafael will broaden the conversation more and challenge us to think about the ways in which culture can create vulnerabilities to trafficking.
Offering General Session talks are Marisa Kwiatkowski, investigative reporter with USA Today, and Daniel Dye, Assistant Chief Deputy Attorney General from Pennsylvania. Marisa and Daniel have investigated major cases of sex crimes, sex abuse, and cover-ups. They will share their journeys of investigation and what they learned from these cases that garnered national attention.
For more information about speakers, to register for the full day, or the Gretchen Q&A only, go to www.wichita.edu/bethebombshell.
WSU students connect with military and private industry to open career paths
Wichita State students work at Firepoint and learn research and networking skills as part of their applied learning experience. Their experiences can connect them with military and labs and technologies that spark an interest in a career opportunity.
Firepoint is a technology-transfer partnership and its work can help the Army maintain a supply of trained civilian workers.

Here’s this week’s university update
The following update was given at last Thursday’s WSU Weekly Briefing.
Dr. GOLDEN ANNOUNCES TASK FORCES
With an emphasis on transparency and shared governance, Wichita State University president Dr. Jay Golden announced several organizational updates and nine task forces on Tuesday.
The organizational changes are focused on diversifying and expanding Wichita State’s research and ensuring that innovation plays an even greater role for students and faculty across all disciplines.
The university-wide task forces give the broader campus community an opportunity to provide input and suggestions on topics that will have an impact on our institution moving forward. It is important that our faculty, staff, students and in some cases community members/alumni participate in this process to ensure broad representation and different perspectives in developing recommendations.
As students return to class this week, one of Dr. Golden’s priorities is their experience. Through his Twitter account (@PresidentWSU), he offered to meet students for coffee or attend class to help him see the university through their eyes.
MEET THE POLICE, GET A PRIZE
The Wichita State University Police Department has been named as one of the Top 25 programs in the country for its focus on safety.
The list, compiled by Safe Campus, places WSU at No. 16 in the nation. The award is open to any administrative department from a U.S. college or university that has improved campus safety.
Making this Top 25 list is a recognition that WSU has excelled in making campus a more secure place for students, employees and visitors.
As another outreach opportunity, WSUPD Officers will be carrying WSUPD “poker chips” that will have the department’s badge on the front and the WSU logo and a website address on the back.
The website will direct people to locations on campus that you will be able to exchange the poker chip for a reward. Those rewards vary by location, but could include free drinks with meals, tacos, merchandise discounts, and more. Chips are redeemable at on-campus locations only.
In order to receive a chip, engage an officer on campus, introduce yourself, and get to know the officer. You might be rewarded with a poker chip.

NetApp will add 45 full-time jobs over the next five years and 70 over the next ten.
NetApp’s presence on campus will significantly boost applied learning, convergent science and digital transformation research for students and faculty, while also helping the regional economy.

Do you know who Bayard Rustin is?
A Black History Month film and discussion: “Brother Outsider – The Life of Bayard Rustin” will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, in 266 RSC.
Rustin shaped the Civil Rights Movement strategy as a longtime advisor to Martin Luther King Jr., and was known and respected by numerous US presidents and foreign leaders.
This documentary captures Rustin's commitment to pacifism and his visionary advocacy of Gandhian nonviolence, which made him a pioneer in the 1940s and captured King's imagination in the 1950s.
In 1963, Rustin was tapped by A. Philip Randolph to organize the historic March on Washington, the largest protest America had ever seen at the time. But Rustin was also seen as a political liability. He was openly gay during the fiercely homophobic era of the 40s and 50s and, as a result, was frequently shunned by the same movement he helped create.
Join us for a viewing of a film that looks into the life of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, followed by a discussion.
