Shocker-branded buses

Shocker-branded buses hit the streets of Wichita

Two new battery-powered buses wrapped in Shocker pride will soon be seen zipping through Wichita's streets.

Wichita Transit recently unveiled the Wichita State University-branded buses, which are ecofriendly, filled with modern conveniences, and will circulate among the university’s main campus, as well as Wichita State South, WSU Tech and the Metroplex.

Wichita Transit took over Wichita State’s bus routes in August. Bus services and all Wichita Transit bus services come at no additional charge for staff, faculty and students. However, all Shockers MUST show their Wichita State ID card when they board the bus. Guests and visitors to the Wichita State campus can ride routes 21A and 202A at no additional charge.

The state-of-the-art eco-friendly buses are equipped with a fold-down bike rack on the front of the bus with spaces or positions to hold three bikes, free Wi-Fi and 24 seats per bus. Riders can also opt to stand and use the buses’ balancing handles.

Pictured above: WuShock presents the two new Shocker-branded, battery-powered buses that will be circulating among Wichita State University's main campus, WSU Tech, and the Metroplex.

Shocker Neighborhood Commitment

Shocker Neighborhood Commitment offers scholarships and support to Wichita State’s neighbors

Wichita State University has created a scholarship and support network to help those nearest to its campus. The Shocker Neighborhood Commitment provides funding to make college more affordable and attainable for recent high school graduates living in the Shocker Neighborhood.

The scholarship provides last-dollar funding, which means it will cover the unmet need of qualified students. It is available to students who reside between Oliver Street and Interstate 135 to the east and west, and Kansas Highway 96 and Central Avenue to the north and south.

All recipients will also receive academic support and career planning services from one or more of the universities signature support programs.

Walk with Wu

'Walk with Wu' celebrates 125 years of Wichita State

In honor of Wichita State University's 125th anniversary, three Wichita State faculty members have teamed up with an alumna artist to create "A Walk with Wu," a graphic novel that chronicles the university's rich history through the eyes of our beloved mascot: WuShock.

“We hope that readers will appreciate the different phases of Wichita State’s story and how we have changed while maintaining the core of who we are," said Dr. Jay Price, professor of history and one of the book's authors.

It's the perfect gift for all Shockers. The books, which sell for $12, are available in the Rhatigan Student Center Shocker Stores.

Wichita State signs MOU with local community organizations to create the 'Refugee Learning and Resettlement Team'

Wichita State has signed a memorandum of agreement with five local community partners to create the “Refugee Learning and Resettlement Team.”

The local community partners are Kansas Leadership Center, Breakthrough Community Church, Saint Francis Ministries, City of Wichita, and the International Rescue Committee. These partnerships will expand existing service-learning and applied-learning opportunities for WSU students to work with refugee and asylee populations. In addition, the partnerships will explore the possibility of sponsoring an annual conference on refugee issues, creating certificate programs in migration studies, and advancing the vision to become an important resource for addressing refugee resettlement issues, serving Kansas and beyond.

The “Refugee Learning and Resettlement Team” was created as part of Phase I of the Center for Educational Technologies to Assist Refugee Learners, funded through the President's Convergence Science Initiative.

Generation Lead Podcast

Generation Lead Podcast Series featuring Tajahnae Stocker

Current graduate student Alexus Scott and Student Involvement have partnered together to conduct and produce a podcast series focusing on the development of our next generation's leaders. The podcast series is called Generation Lead and features voices from current WSU students, staff, faculty, and community partners.

Due to the recent virtual change in in-person programming, the podcast series provides high impact dialogue that empowers, challenges, and motivates a generation to lead and take space in their personal capacities with great measure. You can check out previous and upcoming episodes via streaming platforms like Anchor, Spotify, Breaker, and Google Podcasts.

The Creator of Change, we’re going to learn and discuss more about the ICT Community Fridge Project. The ICT Community Fridge Project has launched and received an abundance of support from the local Wichita community. This initiative and movement have been giving back in the form of providing mutual aid. The fridge serves as a resource to reduce food insecurity in targeted areas across the city.

Tajahnae Stocker has developed a program that precisely acknowledges the disparities and provides relief to the barriers and challenges that folks are faced with daily. Being a current student, we will explore the creation of her recent idea and discuss what leadership capabilities it’s taken to develop such a viable resource in such a short amount of time
