Songfest 2018 coming Saturday, Oct. 27
Songfest is a lip sync and dance competition hosted by the WSU Campus Traditions Committee. Student groups have been mixing their music and choreographing their moves for weeks and are ready to show you what they've got! See performances by Alpha Phi, Gamma Phi Beta, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sigma Phi Epsilon.
Following the performances, there will be a presentation of the Student of the Year finalists and Shocktoberfest Award Winners will be announced.
Songfest takes place at the Orpheum Theatre (200 N. Broadway) at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. Tickets to Songfest are $10, and can be purchased through selectaseat.com, the Intrust Bank Arena Ticket Office or at the Orpheum beginning at 6 p.m.

One elevator in Hubbard Hall is out of service for maintenance
One of the two Hubbard Hall core elevators will be out of service for maintenance this week through Friday, Oct. 26. The other elevator will remain in service for building floor access as usual.
Facilities Services apologizes for any inconveniences presented by this single elevator shutdown, and we hope to return the elevator to service as soon as possible.
Invitation to screening of ‘Intelligent Lives' tomorrow (Thursday, Oct. 25)
Join the special education programs for a screening of “Intelligent Lives,” a film by Dan Habib, from 6-8 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Oct. 25) in 211 Hubbard Hall. The event is free but registration is required.
“Intelligent Lives” stars three pioneering young American adults with intellectual disabilities – Micah, Naieer and Naomie – who challenge perceptions of intelligence as they navigate high school, college and the workforce.
Students can request their professional development hours at registration.
Parking advisory
This week we will have one reservation for the Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School football game in Cessna Stadium on Friday, Oct. 26, which happens to be the same day as a volleyball game in Charles Koch Arena. A portion of the area between Cessna Stadium and Koch Arena will be blocked off Wednesday night (Oct. 24) through the game on Friday night Oct. 26. A text alert will notify people as well.
All SASO parking lots (see map at Wichita.edu/parking – Athletic Parking) will close at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30 for a home basketball game. A text alert will be send as a reminder, too.
On Friday, Nov. 2, 150 parking stalls on the west side of Koch Arena will be blocked off for Black and Yellow Day.
Nov. 1 Town Hall to feature the value of a liberal arts and sciences education
Come to the Town Hall at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the CAC Theater for Fairmount College's town hall dedicated entirely to discussing the value of a liberal arts and sciences education.
The participants include Robert Litan, a nonresident senior fellow at Brookings Institution, as moderator.
Panelists are:
- Jean Griffith, associate professor, department of English, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
- Debbie Haynes, retired family physician and chair of the WSU Foundation Board
- Eric F. Melgren, United States District Judge, District of Kansas
- Jay Price, professor and chair, Department of History, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
The last 15 minutes of the program will be open to audience questions. A wine and cheese reception will take place after the town hall.
Students are encouraged to attend. This event is also open to the public.
WSU professor, student team up with Ocean Spray to stop tooth decay
Wichita State professor David McDonald and graduate assistant Alisha Prince are trying to change the world, one mouth at a time. The team is teaming up with Ocean Spray to research synergistic properties contained in cranberries and other natural extracts that will, in theory, stop the decay of teeth and provide an alternative to traditional oral health care.

Shocker Women's Basketball is looking for an energetic, positive and self-motivated Wichita State student to emcee at our women's basketball games this season! This position will assist with in-game promotions, interact with fans and create energy throughout the game.
The responsibilities and duties of this position include but are not limited to, memorizing a script as well as being able to think quickly on your feet and adapt to new situations while interacting with the crowd. The time commitment for this position is the ability to work all game days, including holidays if needed.

Think Pink Week
Join Black Student Union in its Think Pink Week for Breast Cancer Awareness Month! The awareness week is to shine light on Breast Cancer and help show the community and other students at Wichita State University that the Black Student Union is aware that Breast Cancer affects people from all walks of life.
The awareness week continues now (Wednesday, Oct. 24) to Friday, Oct. 26. This week will be filled with information, fun activities and community engagement to show awareness to all those who have been effected by any type of cancer. Come out and have fun!
Balloons for a Cure event coming Friday, Oct. 26
Join Black Student Union and Love Your Melon in a balloon release for Breast Cancer Awareness month. The balloon release will be held at 3 p.m. Friday Oct. 26, in front of Duerksen Fine Arts Center.
Students, faculty, staff and the Wichita community are encouraged to attend. Following the event there will be cake and punch for participants.
At this event we'll have paper and pens, so participants can attach their loved ones name with a note on the balloon. Join us in spreading awareness and love into the air as we honor our loved ones. Help us bring awareness with the community!

Housing and Residence Life posting reminders
Shocker Hall and The Flats are both happy to help promote programs and other happenings occurring on campus.
If you would like items advertised to the residential student population, please drop off physical flyers at the desk of each building so that posters can be approved before going up on our advertising boards (Shocker Hall can hang five copies, The Flats can hang 15 copies).
You may find that your poster doesn't go up right away; this doesn't mean your poster wasn't approved, but due to the volume of posters we receive, we will only hang posters one week before the event is occurring.
Generally HRL does not approve the hanging of programs not occurring on campus or that showcase alcohol, drugs, profanity, nudity, etc., on the poster. Any unapproved posters or flyers will be removed immediately. We also ask that you refrain from hanging any signage on the front doors to either building, as we only post emergency notifications to this area and do not want residents to get in the habit of ignoring posters in these spaces.
If you would like more exposure for your program, you may also send an electronic version of your poster to the Residence Life Coordinator team (Becca Johnson, Carley Saunders, Lauren Wilson and Rebecca Snow).

Get legal advice without the cost
Legal advice will be available on Tuesday, Oct. 30, and Thursday, Nov. 8. Any current WSU student may sign up for a 15-minute meeting with an attorney to discuss an issue or concern they may be facing.

WSU Weekly Briefing to feature Ana Lazarin and Kansas BEST robotics competition
The WSU Weekly Briefing will begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Oct. 25) in the Marcus Welcome Center.
Ana Lazarin from the College of Engineering Dean's Office at WSU, will recap another successful Kansas BEST robotics competition that was held last Saturday, Oct. 20, in Charles Koch Arena.
Tracee Friess, director of communications for research and technology transfer, will provide an overall university update.
The briefing will be livestreamed and available later that day at WSU Weekly Briefing. There will be time for questions following the briefing.
WSU School of Performing Arts presents ‘Seussical,' the musical
The Wichita State University School of Performing Arts is performing “Seussical,” Oct. 25-28 in Wilner Auditorium.

Khamphou Milayome spends his days teaching meditation at the Lao Buddhist Associates temple south of town. By night, he becomes the student at Wichita State's Barton School of Business.
