Rodney Miller, dean of the College of Fine Arts, will host a College of Fine Arts Town Hall meeting to answer questions and spark discussion on the Shock the Future Referendum, a student-led campaign that identifies a list of academic and student success infrastructure needs.

‘Free Speech, Academic Freedom and Teaching in the Humanities’
We all know that students aren’t allowed to use racial slurs in the classroom, but how do we—as teachers—justify these restrictions when confronted by those who claim students should have “free speech” and “academic freedom?” Join the English Graduate Student Association for a research talk on this subject by Dan Colson, associate professor of English at Emporia State University at 2 p.m. today (Friday, Feb. 8) in 100 Lindquist Hall.
Colson regularly publishes on issues of academic freedom and pedagogy, including “On the Ground in Kansas: Social Media, Academic Freedom and the Fight for Higher Education,” published by the AAUP Journal of Academic Freedom, and “Teaching Radically with Koch Money,” published in Radical Teacher.
Most recently, his article “Virtually White: Teaching Race in Online Classes,” can be found in Teaching with Tension: Race, Resistance, and Reality in the Classroom, an edited collection that addresses “the extent to which attitudes about race, impacted by the current political moment in the United States, have produced pedagogical challenges for professors in the humanities.”
At Emporia State, Colson regularly teaches classes in 20th century American literature and African American literature.

Call for Presentations / Save the Date: 6th Annual Gender & Sexuality in Kansas Conference
We are currently seeking submissions of original research, training / workshops, and other scholarship from any discipline from students, scholars, staff, and interested others associated with a college or university in Kansas.
The deadline for submissions is Monday, Feb. 25. We hope that you will consider submitting a proposal consisting of a 200-300 word summary of your proposed presentation, and/or encourage your students and colleagues to submit proposals.
The conference will take place on Friday, March 29 in the Rhatigan Student Center.
Our keynote speaker for this year’s conference is Monique Morris, award-winning author of the book “Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools.” Her talk will be titled “Education is Freedom Work (And Other Critical Reflections about Responses to School Pushout for Black Girls).”

Volunteer at Wu’s Big Event X
Community Service Board invites you to join us on Saturday, Feb. 9 to make a huge impact in the Wichita community by volunteering at Wu’s Big Event X. Individuals, organizations, faculty, staff, alumni, friends and family are all encouraged to participate in a fun-filled day of service.
The event will be start on the third floor of the RSC in the Shirley Beggs Ballroom. Check-in will run from 8:30-8:50 a.m. We will have fun speakers, a breakfast including muffins and coffee, and you will be given a collectible Wu’s Big Event T-shirt.
Participants will load onto buses and be at a service site by 10 a.m. and volunteer until 1 p.m. Participants will then get back to the RSC for fun celebration activities and lunch (a Chartwells boxed lunch containing sandwich, chips, and fruit). The event will end by 2 p.m.
We hope to serve more than 750 collective volunteer hours on Feb. 9, and we need your help to make this happen!
IRB announces revised application process
The revised “Common Rule” for the protection of human subjects went into effect on Jan. 21, 2019. As a result of this, we have revised our application process. There is now only one New Study Application that will need to be submitted. It can be found on the IRB website. Please make note of this and begin using the new form.

Engage ICT: Democracy on Tap is a monthly community conversation featuring a panel of local experts and topics that touch your daily life. Our February discussion is on education funding.
A new governor could mean changes to education funding in Kansas. What implications could these changes have on Wichita-area schools? We’ll hear from those who know. Panelists include Lieutenant Governor Lynn Rogers, representatives from local school districts, and Celia Llopis-Jepsen, education reporter for the Kansas News Service. Managing Classroom discussion training available
Graduate Studies will offer a Managing Classroom discussion and lunch from noon-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in 142 RSC. The presenter will be John Jones from the Media Resources Center.
One of the most effective teaching techniques we have at our disposal is discussion. In this training we will talk about managing discussion – how to draw out students, establish a safe space for students to explore ideas, and how to keep control without stifling student voices.

Volunteers sought for upcoming conference at Wichita State
Wichita State is the host of the 27th annual MBLGTACC conference Friday to Sunday, Feb. 15-17. The Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Asexual College Conference (MBLGTACC) is an annual conference held to connect, educate and empower queer and trans+ college students, faculty and staff around the Midwest and beyond.
The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Century II Conference Center. This year’s event is expected to draw more than 1,200 students from around the Midwest, and feature speakers and entertainers including Nyle DiMarco, Janaya Khan, Pidgeon Pigonas, and Penny Tration from Ru Paul’s Drag Race Season 10.
To make this event a success, we need your help! You can choose a volunteer opportunity that fits your schedule.
