Parking update
The RSC will replace the large chillers located between the parking garage and the Human Resources building tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 14).
- The RSC lot (lot #7) will close late tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 13) and remain closed on Thursday, Feb. 14.
- Partial Parking Garage closure includes:
- East parking garage vehicle exit
- NE stairwell
- Elevator
- North door on ground level
- Several parking stalls on the north and east side of the 4th level of the parking garage
Please note: Vehicles with ADA permissions may still park in the garage, but there will be no elevator service on Thursday, Feb. 14. All vehicles must enter / exit on the south side of the parking garage. Pedestrians must use the southwest stairwell.

Participate in the WSU/McBEE Campus Safety Survey open now
Help WSU & the national McBEE campus consortium strengthen data driven practices in regards to campus safety by completing the WSU / McBEE Campus Safety Survey accessible through a direct link you received in an email from WSU on Feb. 11, or you can access the survey via the “my surveys” link in the myWSU portal (scroll to second box on left hand side of the home page).
The short 10-minute survey was available starting Feb. 11. Students participating in the research will be entered into one of two drawings for $250 scholarships and second place $50 Amazon Gift Cards. The first drawing will occur on Feb. 22. Four scholarships and 14 gift cards are being provided by the Title IX office.
All current WSU students age 18 and older are eligible to complete the survey. For more information, check out the “McBEE in 60 Seconds” video in the myWSU portal for more information.

Financial Aid verification process has been simplified
Did you know the financial aid verification process has been simplified? Because of recent changes by the U.S. Department of Education, you may now submit Signed Tax Returns to confirm tax information for verification. Previously, we needed a tax return transcript, but you may now submit the appropriate year’s signed copy of the 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ instead. As a reminder, we only need the two main pages of your federal return and not the entire document.

Run in the upcoming SGA general election
The time is now. The SGA Elections Commission encourages and welcomes you to submit your paperwork to run in the upcoming general election to seek a position on SGA.
The Declaration for Candidacy for the SGA Senate continues to be open. Senators on the voting legislative body of SGA, are required to complete two office hours per week, they are able to work on specified initiatives, and attend weekly committee and senate meetings on Wednesdays.
The Student Government Association represents the entire student body, while advocating for anything that could affect students and student life and the university, local, state and national level. Without adequate student representation, the student body is voiceless and powerless.

The Fuse (an initiative out of the College of Applied Studies) is hosting event in collaboration with the Black Student Union and Office of Diversity and Inclusion from 6-8 p.m. today (Wednesday, Feb. 13) in 142 RSC. This will be a time for students to network and engage with local black professionals from various industries.
Save the date - URCAF 2019
The annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Forum (URCAF) will be held on Friday, April 19, in the Rhatigan Student Center. The forum provides an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students at Wichita State to present their scholarly and creative activity to a faculty, student and community audience, while competing for cash awards. Study Abroad opportunity in Paris, France for all majors

WSU Weekly Briefing to feature a Shock the Future update from the dean of University Libraries
The WSU Weekly Briefing will begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 14) in the Marcus Welcome Center.
Kathy Downes, dean of University Libraries, will talk about the potential impact of the Shock the Future referendum on University Libraries.
Tracee Friess, director of communications for research and technology transfer, will provide an overall university update.
The briefing will be livestreamed and available later that day at WSU Weekly Briefing. There will be time for questions following the briefing.
Shocker Learning Center to host a Valentine’s Day Open House
The Shocker Learning Center (SLC) is hosting an Open House from 1-3 p.m. on Valentine’s Day, Thursday, Feb. 14, in 107 Lindquist Hall. Stop by and learn to love learning!
The SLC is open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is the home of Student Success’ Academic Success Programs.
Supplemental Instruction (SI): Free, weekly group study sessions led by a certified SI leader who has previously succeeded in the course. Meet with your SI leader individually during their office hours.
Tutoring: Free one-on-one and small group educational support with a trained tutor.
Peer Coaches: Peers helping peers with time management, study skills, goal setting, organizing assignments, note taking and referrals to other resources on campus.
In addition to the services it offers, the SLC is also a study room equipped with computers, and free beverages such as coffee, tea, hot chocolate and filtered water.

Rain Dove to present program tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 14)
Rain Dove is an androgynous / agender model, actor and activist will be speaking at 7 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 14) in the CAC Theater. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.
Featured in Vogue, Cosmo and People magazine, Dove, is best known for breaking the stereotypes through their work in fashion, posing as male and female models in photoshoots, productions and runway shows. Genetic engineer, firefighter, and fashionista, Rain Dove is a humanitarian bringing awareness to what is means to be non-binary and promoting self-identity.

Graduate student seeking participants for coping with depression research project
A WSU graduate student working on her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology is seeking volunteers to participate in a project that compares two approaches for coping with depression. This study will be conducted within the Department of Psychology (Jabara Hall) under the supervision of Robert Zettle, and will require your involvement for 18- 20 weeks. The study involves eight weekly treatment sessions.
The first two weeks involve one hour sessions and the remaining six sessions will be half-hour sessions. Participants who complete all sessions will be contacted one week and two months later for follow-up measures.
Participants must be at least 18 and will be screened in three stages to determine their eligibility.
If you are interested, complete an online survey (30 minutes) to assess your initial eligibility. The next two stages will be conducted in person for 20 and 50 minutes respectively.

Volunteers needed for research study
Research Topic / Purpose of the study: The purpose of this research study is to explore the higher educational experience of Returning Adult Students and Traditional Students; looking at whether they prefer online learning or traditional classroom experiences.
Procedures: Participants will respond to an online survey that should only take about 15 to 20 minutes to complete. The survey is completely anonymous (no personal or identifying information is collected.)
Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria:
- Participants must be over the age of 18 and have participated or be currently participating in an online course.

Kansas-based annual biosciences symposium honors university students for research posters, presentations
Eighteen undergraduate students were honored for their scientific research presentations at the 17th annual Kansas IDeA (Institutional Development Awards) Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (K-INBRE) Symposium Jan. 19-20 in Overland Park, Kansas.
The annual symposium is part of the K-INBRE initiative to prepare promising university students for careers in bioscience careers in Kansas. Ten campuses in Kansas and Oklahoma participate in the collaborative network that is led by the University of Kansas Medical Center.
“Providing training and professional development opportunities to students with promising careers as biomedical researchers is a priority for the K-INBRE program,” said Doug Wright, principal investigator for K-INBRE and professor and vice chair in anatomy and cell biology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. “This program strives to keep the biosciences in Kansas growing and thriving with opportunities for students, young faculty, and established researchers, which are showcased at the annual Symposium.”
The program provides opportunities for students to work in research laboratories or in their communities developing research projects under the guidance of seasoned mentors. These opportunities give students the tools and guidance to better inform their future career choices in the bio and medical sciences.
The annual Symposium brings together the network of students, faculty and staff from the University of Kansas Medical Center, Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Haskell Indian Nations University, Kansas State University, Pittsburg State University, University of Kansas, Washburn University, Wichita State University, and Langston University in Langston, Okla. More than 160 posters were presented by students, postdocs, faculty, and staff from all 10 of the campuses in Kansas and Oklahoma.
The following WSU students received cash prizes for their oral and poster presentations:
- Abby Jurgensmeier, majoring in anthropology, “Tags and TIRF Microscopy to Monitor Palladin Interactions with Actin” –poster presentation. Her parents are James and Christie Jurgensmeier from Salina, Kan.
- Erina Kutilek, “Role of Myopalladin in cardiac muscle functions and disease” –oral presentation.
- Hunter Picard, majoring in biochemistry, presented “Structure-Guided Design and Optimization of a Novel Series of Dipeptidyl Inhibitors of Norovirus 3CL Protease” –poster presentation. His parents are Robert and Stephanie Picard from Rose Hill, Kansas
Call for Presentations / Save the Date: 6th Annual Gender & Sexuality in Kansas Conference
We are currently seeking submissions of original research, training / workshops, and other scholarship from any discipline from students, scholars, staff, and interested others associated with a college or university in Kansas.
The deadline for submissions is Monday, Feb. 25. We hope that you will consider submitting a proposal consisting of a 200-300 word summary of your proposed presentation, and/or encourage your students and colleagues to submit proposals.
The conference will take place on Friday, March 29 in the Rhatigan Student Center.
Our keynote speaker for this year’s conference is Monique Morris, award-winning author of the book “Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools.” Her talk will be titled “Education is Freedom Work (And Other Critical Reflections about Responses to School Pushout for Black Girls).”
