Graduate School - Annual Awards for Academic Year 2019-20
Students must be nominated by a graduate faculty member to be considered for the next year financial awards listed below. The awards are only available for students who will not graduate until fall 2019 or later. Spring and summer 2019 graduates are not eligible for consideration. The faculty online nomination deadline is Friday, April 5. Only one student per program, per award, may be nominated - program faculty must work together to determine who should be nominated. Awards open for nomination by a faculty member:
- Tilford Fellowship: To be eligible, a student must be admitted to a graduate degree program in good standing, be enrolled full-time, and demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to minority students who are U.S. citizens.
- Delano Maggard Jr, Research Grant: To be eligible, a student must be admitted to a graduate degree program in good standing, be enrolled either full-time or part-time, have completed nine graduate credit hours, and demonstrate financial need. This award entails the following additional criteria: (1) student must submit a budget for the research project and (2) if the proposed research involves human or animal subjects, a copy of the approval from the WSU institutional Review Board or Animal Care and Use committee should be included.
- Dora Wallace Hodgson Outstanding Graduate Student Award (Masters and Doctoral/PhD): To be eligible, a student must be admitted to a graduate degree program and in good standing.
Celebration of life for John Bardo planned for Thursday, May 9
An event celebrating the life of President John Bardo will be held on Thursday, May 9. We will let you know more details when they become available.
We want to thank everyone for the outpouring of sympathy and support since the passing of President Bardo on March 12.
To quote the Kansas Board of Regents KBOR Chair, Dennis Mullin, “We will miss him as a leader and a person and are thankful for the opportunity to have worked with him. Wichita State University, the city of Wichita, and the state of Kansas are better places because of John Bardo.”
These sentiments were echoed by Provost Rick Muma, who wrote “President Bardo had a profound positive impact on Wichita State and the community. Future generations of students will benefit from his foresight and leadership.”
Everyone wanting to honor President Bardo may do so by supporting a scholarship named for his wife, which the Bardos created in 2012. The Deborah J. Bardo Scholarship is given annually to an incoming freshman with financial need, with children of WSU faculty and staff as the preferred recipients.

Fairmount College Student Advisory Council seeks nominations
The Fairmount College Student Advisory Council (FCSAC) is seeking nominations for students to join for the 2019-20 school year. FCSAC was formed during Dean Matson’s tenure as a conduit for students to provide feedback on student issues directly to the dean. Nominations are due Tuesday, March 26. More information is available below.
The FCSAC is intended to provide students opportunities to share their thoughts and experiences with the college leadership while allowing the dean's office to communicate priorities and activities of the college to the students. The council meets monthly with the dean for one hour, at a time agreed upon by the students, to create and actualize plans that will make Fairmount College an exceptional place for students and learning outcomes.
The selection committee will review all of the nominations and offer official invitations to those best fit for this group. Please send all nominations by Tuesday, March 26 so that students may have time to respond to our inquiries.

The WSU College Readiness Partnership Initiative invites you to a workshop by Sue Keller-Mathers from 9-11 a.m. Monday, March 25, in 233 Rhatigan Student Center.
Creativity was named the top skill worldwide for 2109 by Linkedin. Calling it “Career Proof” in an age when automation is making more jobs obsolete, the demand for workers who can think in novel ways and solve problems that have never been encountered before is essential. Given that workers will need to be able to adapt, learn new skills and will be employed in jobs that don’t exist today, employers are looking for creativity in their future hires. In this workshop, you’ll examine ways to identify your creative strengths and practice a set of skills for improving creativity for use in your current college career and beyond.

Krook has a long-standing history of topics related to women in the workplace, but was recently inspired by the #metoo movement to create discussions that address systemic issues that may hinder our success.
In this talk, she offers two models for making relations work better: collegiality and allyship. She will also offer tactics for making these models more effective. Are you concerned about bias and equality for all? This talk is for you! Come network with lunch as we hear possibilities of reaching a more inclusive culture in the workplace. Nationally known speaker to lead three events at WSU next week
Anne Krook is a nationally known speaker who helps students transition from the academy (university) to the workplace, using the language that employers expect from applicants.
Krook herself left academia (she was an assistant professor of English at the University of Michigan) to work for a small startup in Seattle … Amazon (!), where she enjoyed many roles both abroad and in the United States. She then went on to become VP of Operations at another startup, Mindbloom, and then VP of Operations at Synapse.
She now specializes in helping graduate students transition to non-academic workplaces and undergraduate humanities majors translate their skills into jobs. In addition to her consulting work, Krook currently chairs the Board of Directors of Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund.

Innovation Campus update
At Thursday’s Weekly Briefing, there was Innovation Campus update. As you may know, the University’s newest Partnership Building, P2, is close to full occupancy.
Spirit AeroSystems moved into a large space on the second floor last month. WSU’s NIAR Advance Research Program, is also expected to move into P2 later this month—sharing the second floor with Spirit.
WSU’s Digital Twin Lab opened up this month and will focus on an extensive multi-year project to perform digital or virtual modeling of parts and products for the U.S. Government.
WSU’s Machine Learning Lab also moved into P2 earlier this year. There, students, faculty and other researchers work on sustainment of aging parts of military aircraft.
Based on the success of P2 we recently broke ground on P3 to accommodate the growing number of companies and organizations looking to partner with us, hire our students and harness the technology, research and expertise found on our campus.

Celebrate Holi – the Festival of Colors
People of all ages and backgrounds take to the streets to celebrate this colorful festival. The same air of celebratory fun and friendship will be felt in our event from noon-3 p.m. Saturday, April 13, on the east lawn of Hubbard Hall. The color, noise, and entertainment that accompanies the celebration of Holi will bear witness to a feeling of oneness and a sense of brotherhood.
Entry is $5. Dress in white to enjoy the colors.
Gartner IT Town Halls coming April 3 for students, staff / faculty
In early February, the university announced it had engaged with Gartner Consulting to make sure we have the right IT structure and capabilities to help drive the university’s future success. In that endeavor, we’d like to hear your thoughts.
On Wednesday afternoon April 3, Gartner will hold three IT Town Hall sessions in 208 Hubbard Hall, to engage faculty, staff, and students on the IT services offered on campus, and their connection to the demands of a modern higher education institution. If interested, please plan to attend one of the sessions based on your relationship to the university. If you have any questions, reach out to David Miller, university budget director.

The program will run from 1:30-4 p.m. in 224 McKinley Hall, followed by a reception from 4-5:30 p.m. in 207 McKinley Hall.

‘Mikrokosmos’ 65th Edition Release Party today (Friday, May 22)
You’re invited to the “Mikrokosmos” 65 Release Party today (Friday, March 22). Located
at the McKnight Art Center first floor atrium, the event will include readings and
art from the 65th issue. The journal will be for sale as well as “Mikrokosmos” and
“mojo” T-shirts. Food and drinks will be served at the 5:30 p.m. reception, and the
reading will begin at 6 p.m.
“Mikrokosmos” is the print edition of the graduate-run online literary journal, “mojo,” at Wichita State University, highlighting art and writing from WSU students and alumni that has continually published for more than 50 years, featuring work from William S. Burroughs, Charles Plymell, and William Stafford, among others.
Candlelight event today (Friday, March 22) in memory of victims of Ethiopian airline crash
A Wichita candlelight event is being held to honor the memory of the 157 victims of the Ethiopian Airlines jet crash from 4:30-8 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, March 22) in 208 Hubbard Hall. There will be an indoor seminar program that will involve a panel discussion from 4:30-6 p.m. and an outdoor program from 6-8 p.m. Please bring only battery-operated candles.
The victims belonged to 50 different nationalities, with the majority Kenyan nationals. Victims included eight Americans and 18 Canadians.
As Wichita residents, we have the opportunity to come together in the context of this very sad event which connects to our core economy, and which has propelled Wichita to emerge as a major city in the global aviation industry.
The event is being planned by a group of WSU faculty, along with internal and external cosponsors.

Omaris Zamora, assistant professor of Spanish from The University of Kansas, will be presenting at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, in 128 Jabara Hall, on two AfrolatinX feminists -- rapper Cardy B and Youtuber and influencer La Bella Chanel.
This presentation is part of the Latin American and LatinX Studies Series, and is cosponsored by the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures, the Center for Women’s Studies, and the Hispanic honor society Sigma Delta Pi.

Apprenticing in auctioning
Riley Webb, a sophomore majoring in entrepreneurship and marketing, recently worked at the real estate auction firm McCurdy Auction as an apprentice. While enhancing his passion for marketing, Webb received experience in photography, design, public relations, and copyrighting.
This position was offered as a part of the Career Development Center’s Apprent-ICT program, which was piloted fall 2018 and spring 2019. Apprent-ICT helps freshmen and sophomores develop career readiness skills and explore various career fields in a paid position.

You are invited to create an edible work of art inspired by your favorite book or author. Entries will be displayed in Ablah Library. Let your imagination run free. Have fun with puns or create something in the shape of a book. Entries may be made from anything that is edible (cake, bread, crackers, gelatin, fruit, vegetables, candy, etc.) as long as it can be displayed for a few hours without melting or spoiling.

WSU presents “The Theory of Relativity," the musical
Wichita State University’s School of Performing Arts will present “The Theory of Relativity”, the musical (rated PG). The musical will take place 7:30 p.m. today (Friday, March 22) and Saturday, March 23, and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 24, in Wilner Auditorium. Students get a free ticket with a WSU ID.

Shocker baseball opens AAC play this weekend at Eck Stadium
Wichita State baseball is slated to begin American Athletic Conference play this weekend, hosting the Memphis Tigers in a three-game series at Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field. The series opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. today (Friday, March 22) with game two slated for 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, and the series finale scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday, March 24.
The first 500 fans through the gates at Friday’s game will receive a Flying W mini helmet. As always, Wichita State students receive free admission with a valid ID.
Wichita State invites students to consider new higher education program
Are you interested in pursuing a career in higher education? Beginning in fall 2019, Wichita State will offer a Master of Education in Educational Psychology: Higher Education / Student Affairs track.
To help kick off this exciting new program, WSU is hosting a Graduate Assistant weekend Friday and Saturday, March 22-23. During this weekend perspective students will learn more about the program and interview for graduate assistantships, including those in Housing and Residence Life, Student Involvement, Student Success and the Career Development Center.

The 2019 Gender & Sexuality in Kansas Conference will be held Friday, March 29 on
the second floor of the RSC. The conference is scheduled from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., with
our keynote address by Monique Morris, titled, “Education is Freedom Work (And Other
Critical Reflections about Responses to School Pushout for Black Girls),” from 1-2:30
p.m. Those only attending the keynote need not register. We ask that those planning
to attend the full conference at least half-day, however, pre-register so that we
have enough conference materials.
Pre-registration will be open until noon Monday, March 25 at Gender & Sexuality Conference.

Celebrating women in Asian cultures event on March 29

WSU graduate students attend statewide 16th Capitol Graduate Research Summit (CGRS)
On Feb. 26, nine WSU graduate students drove to Topeka to participate in the annual statewide KBOR Capitol Graduate Research Summit (CGRS) event at the Capitol. Brien Bolin, associate dean, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, and Kerry Wilks, interim dean of the Graduate School, participated. The event featured research conducted by graduate students at all Kansas Board of Regents graduate public universities.
2019 SGA Presidential and Vice Presidential Debate set for March 29
Join the SGA Elections Commission for the 2019 Presidential and Vice Presidential Debate for your final chance to learn about all four of our tickets at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 29, in the CAC Theater (doors open at 6 p.m.).
The debate will be moderated by Brandon J. Johnson, Wichita City Council Member from District 1, and will cover a variety of topics from platform points to broad overviews of their hopes for student government.

The School of Performing Arts Student Advisory Council (SPASAC) is hosting a Graphic Design Contest for the School of Performing Arts. SPASAC is seeking a graphic design that identifies and generates a sense of unity among the students in the four major areas, Theatre Performance, Technology and Design, Music Theatre, and Dance.
