WSU earns national ranking for its efforts to support low-income students
Wichita State University has been named to CollegeNET Inc.’s list of Social Mobility Innovators for 2019. Making the list means WSU has a proven track record of successfully enrolling students from low-income backgrounds and graduating them into promising careers.
The Social Mobility Index ranks nearly 1,400 four-year U.S. colleges and universities. The goal of the SMI -- now in its fifth year -- is to help redirect the attribution of "prestige" in the higher education system toward colleges and universities that are advancing economic mobility -- the most pressing civic issue of our time.
Over the past five years, Wichita State, which enrolls approximately 15,000 students, has consistently ranked among the top 3-6 percent of all schools on the SMI.

Shockers think 30
Have you completed a degree audit lately? Do you know how many credits you will complete next year? It’s a good idea to have a plan to reach graduation, and we want you to think about how you may be able to complete 30 credit hours next academic year. If it makes sense and works for you, consider enrolling in a pre-session or summer class to help you reach 30 hours without overwhelming yourself during the fall or spring semester. Learn more below.
It may look something like this --
15 (fall) + 15 (spring) = 30
3 (pre-session) + 12 (fall) + 15 (spring) = 30
12 (fall) + 12 (spring) + 6 (summer) = 30
3 (pre-session) + 12 (fall) + 12 (spring) + 3 (summer) = 30
No matter how you build your 30 hours, you will have the potential to graduate earlier, begin your career sooner and reduce your student loan debt. Talk to your advisor (you can schedule an appointment now!) about your options.
Fairmount College Student Advisory Council seeks nominations
The Fairmount College Student Advisory Council (FCSAC) is seeking nominations for students to join for the 2019-20 school year. FCSAC was formed during Dean Matson’s tenure as a conduit for students to provide feedback on student issues directly to the dean. Nominations are due Tuesday, March 26. More information is available below.
The FCSAC is intended to provide students opportunities to share their thoughts and experiences with the college leadership while allowing the dean's office to communicate priorities and activities of the college to the students. The council meets monthly with the dean for one hour, at a time agreed upon by the students, to create and actualize plans that will make Fairmount College an exceptional place for students and learning outcomes.
The selection committee will review all of the nominations and offer official invitations to those best fit for this group. Please send all nominations by Tuesday, March 26 so that students may have time to respond to our inquiries.
Nominations and questions about involvement or commitments should be referred to the Associate Dean for Student Success Brien Bolin at brien.bolin@wichita.edu or FCSAC President Gentry Thiesen at gentry.thiesen@wichita.edu.
RSVP for lunch and discussion with Anne Krook on March 29
The Graduate School & Career Development invite faculty and students to lunch and a discussion with Anne Krook, Ph.D. titled “Women and Men in the Workplace: Colleagues & Allies.”
The event is from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, March 29, in 156A Corbin Hall. All are welcome, but to reserve your lunch, students should register (rsvp) by logging in to Handshake with your WSU ID and password, and click “Join Event.” An email confirmation will be sent to your "shockers.wichita.edu” email address.
Krook has a long-standing history of topics related to women in the workplace, but was recently inspired by the #metoo movement to create discussions that address systemic issues that may hinder our success.
In this talk, she offers two models for making relations work better: collegiality and allyship. She will also offer tactics for making these models more effective. Are you concerned about bias and equality for all? This talk is for you! Come network with lunch as we hear possibilities of reaching a more inclusive culture in the workplace. To learn more about Krook, visit her website at www.annekrook.com.
