Graduate School - Annual Awards for Academic Year 2019-20
Students must be nominated by a graduate faculty member to be considered for the next year financial awards listed below. The awards are only available for students who will not graduate until fall 2019 or later. Spring and summer 2019 graduates are not eligible for consideration. The faculty online nomination deadline is Friday, April 5. Only one student per program, per award, may be nominated - program faculty must work together to determine who should be nominated. Awards open for nomination by a faculty member:
- Tilford Fellowship: To be eligible, a student must be admitted to a graduate degree program in good standing, be enrolled full-time, and demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to minority students who are U.S. citizens.
- Delano Maggard Jr, Research Grant: To be eligible, a student must be admitted to a graduate degree program in good standing, be enrolled either full-time or part-time, have completed nine graduate credit hours, and demonstrate financial need. This award entails the following additional criteria: (1) student must submit a budget for the research project and (2) if the proposed research involves human or animal subjects, a copy of the approval from the WSU institutional Review Board or Animal Care and Use committee should be included.
- Dora Wallace Hodgson Outstanding Graduate Student Award (Masters and Doctoral/PhD): To be eligible, a student must be admitted to a graduate degree program and in good standing.

Hippodrome tickets are sale starting today (Monday, April 1) in Student Involvement
Hippodrome tickets will be on sale starting today (Monday, April 1) in Student Involvement. Hippodrome is the longest running tradition at Wichita State and consists of a skit and variety act competition, all put together by fellow Shocker Students.
This year’s theme is "Once upon a time in Hippodrome." The skits and variety acts are split for 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, and 6 p.m. Thursday, April 11performances in the CAC Theater, which will be emceed by a selected student. All skits and acts will perform at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 13, in the CAC Theater for the final show with awards to follow, emceed by professional emcee Andrew Trufano.
Wednesday and Thursday show tickets will be on sale for $4, $5, and $6 for WSU students, WSU faculty / staff and the general public, respectively. Saturday show tickets are $8, $10, and $12 for WSU students, WSU faculty / staff, and general public, respectively.

Parking lot closures this week
Monday, April 1 to Friday, April 5 – Parking lots 3N, 3S and 11 between Cessna Stadium and Devlin Hall will be blocked in order to remove some stadium lights.
Tuesday, April 2 – Parking lots 21N and 21W (north of the Marcus Welcome Center) will be blocked off for a WSU Foundation event until 1:30 p.m.
Tuesday and Wednesday, April 2-3 – Parking lot 2N (on the northwest corner of Koch Arena) will be blocked off in preparation for the KFDI Listener Appreciation concert Wednesday night.
Friday, April 5 – The south part of lot 2W (west side of Koch Arena) will be blocked off for Admission’s Black and Yellow Day event until 3 p.m.

The Graduate School celebrates all grad students, and there are fun events planned for National Graduate Student Appreciation Week April 1-5. National Public Health Week (NPHW) is promoted each year during the first week in April. Each day of NPHW focuses on a specific public health topic with the aim to bring together communities and reduce the causes of poor health and disease.

Deadline for URCAF 2019 abstract submissions is Friday, April 5
The annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Forum (URCAF) will be held on Friday, April 19, in the Rhatigan Student Center. The forum provides an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students at Wichita State to present their scholarly and creative activity to a faculty, student and community audience, while competing for cash awards. Free HIV testing available tomorrow (Tuesday, April 2)
Student Health Services, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Housing & Residence Life, and Positive Directions Kansas are offering free HIV and Syphilis testing from 1-4 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, April 2) in 209 Ahlberg Hall.
Shockerthon is coming Saturday, April 6
Shockerthon is coming to WSU on Saturday, April 6 at the Eugene M. Hughes Metropolitan Complex. Shockerthon is a philanthropy event for the community and students of all ages to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals at Ascension Via Christi. In its first six years, Shockerthon raised more than $320,000. This year, run by a newly established student organization, the goal is to raise $50,000.
CMN is a national organization which supports sick and injured kids and, locally, Ascension Via Christi Hospitals, through direct family financial assistance and enhancements to children’s units at the hospitals. Some uses of funding include paying for expenses not covered by insurance such as medication, therapy, hearing aids, wheelchairs, specialized formula, and travel expenses; helping health care facilities purchase innovative care technologies, such as vein viewers, virtual reality distraction technology, and movie goggles specifically for MRI testing among others at Ascension Via Christi Hospital’s newborn intensive care, and ChildLife Center pediatric care units.
Shockerthon 2019 is a six-hour event consisting of family-oriented activities, games, dancing, and food. Families active within Children’s Miracle Network and attendees are invited to participate in a day of celebration and fun after a year of fundraising. Go to dance marathon to sign up to participate or to support students who are raising money for the effort.

Graduate School Professional Development Series offers the art of communication in professional life
“The Art of Communication in Professional Life: Your Competitive Edge” will be presented from noon-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, in 142 RSC. The presenter will be Ray Hull from the College of Health Professions. All are welcome; lunch RSVP to jenny.stauffer@wichita.edu.
To demonstrate excellence as professionals, we must also develop excellence as communicators. Effective communication involves a delicate balance between a nurturing and caring communicative style, and the assurance that one is working with a well-prepared professional.
This presentation will give those in attendance insights into the art of communication, the art of non-verbal communication, and the art of communication in conflict resolution.
Justin Noel Hall to present a graduate marimba recital
Justin Noel Hall presents “Man of the Woods,” a graduate marimba recital at 7:30 p.m. today (Monday, April 1) and Wednesday, April 3, in Wiedemann Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.
This is no April Fools’ joke. It is the culminating performance of Hall’s graduate studies here at Wichita State University. The marimba has been his muse for as long as he can remember, and he’s so excited to share a full recital of only marimba repertoire with both transcriptions and original compositions. The marimba is both the beauty and the beast in his eyes. Such raw power and sound can come from this instrument and at the same time it can be cute, sentimental, and even quite high-brow.

Gartner IT Town Halls coming Wednesday, April 3 for students/ staff / faculty
In early February, the university announced it had engaged with Gartner Consulting to make sure we have the right IT structure and capabilities to help drive the university’s future success. In that endeavor, we’d like to hear your thoughts.
On the afternoon of Wednesday April 3, Gartner will hold three IT Town Hall sessions in 208 Hubbard Hall, to engage faculty, staff, and students on the IT services offered on campus, and their connection to the demands of a modern higher education institution. If interested, please plan to attend one of the sessions based on your relationship to the university. All sessions will be held in 208 Hubbard Hall. First of three spring sculpture dedications is tomorrow (Tuesday, April 2)
The Ulrich Museum of Art will add three sculptures to its renowned Martin H. Bush Outdoor Sculpture Collection in the spring of 2019. A dedication of the “The Celestial Mechanic” by Randy Regier, will be held at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, April 2) on the north lawn of Ahlberg Hall.
The reveal and remarks will be held at 3:30 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. reception on the north lawn of Ahlberg Hall. An artist talk will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Ulrich Museum of Art.
Established in 1972, the Martin H. Bush Outdoor Sculpture Collection, part of the holdings of the Ulrich Museum of Art, is a WSU treasure recognized nationally and internationally as one of the finest collections of its kind. An integral part of the daily life on campus, it has shaped WSU’s sense of place for nearly 50 years, offering moments of contemplation, learning, empathy, and joy to countless students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
The collection is a source of immense and justified pride for the university, the city of Wichita, the state of Kansas, and the Great Plains region. It is, therefore, deeply exciting that following 10 years of research, fundraising, and planning, the collection will expand to 80 pieces this year, with new works continuing to broaden our understanding of what contemporary public sculpture can offer.

Opera Theater to present double-bill
Wichita State University Opera Theater will present two masterpieces in one night, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4, to Saturday, April 6, and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7, in Miller Concert Hall, Duerksen Fine Arts Center.
Each opera lasts less than one hour.
Ravel’s “L’enfant et les Sortilèges” tells the story of an unruly child who is forced to face all he has harmed when animals and household objects come to life.
“Gianni Schicchi” brings us the story of the Donati family who try to change the will of a dear departed, only to be outwitted by the wily Gianni Schicchi. The opera will feature WSU legend Samuel Ramey.
WSU Opera Theater is under the direction of Alan Held. Mark Laycock will lead the WSU Orchestra. Tickets are available online at WSU Fine Arts Box Office or call 978-3233. WSU students receive a free ticket with their Shocker ID.
