Free student picnic tomorrow (Thursday, May 9)
Shockers, join us for a free student picnic at the president’s residence in remembrance of the late Dr. John Bardo as the kickoff event for the Celebration of Life series of events from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, May 9). The rain location is 233 RSC.
John W. Bardo Celebration of Life: ‘It’s a Great Day to be a Shocker’
Wichita State University will honor the life of late President John W. Bardo in a Celebration of Life tomorrow (Thursday, May 9) in the Rhatigan Student Center (RSC). Dr. Bardo, the 13th president of WSU, died March 12, after a long illness.
Everyone is invited to see Bardo’s life display in the Cadman Art Gallery, on the first floor of the RSC now through Friday, May 10.
On Thursday, May 9, exhibits featuring Bardo will be on display from 2-2:45 p.m. in Astor Lounge, outside of the Shirley Beggs Ballroom, on the third floor of the RSC.
The Celebration of Life program with video remembrances begins at 2:30 p.m. in the Shirley Beggs Ballroom. Formal remarks will start at 3 p.m.
Immediately following the program, an ice cream social will be held from 4-5 p.m. on the RSC east patio, lawn and Groover Lounge.
Finals Frenzy: Free chair massage
Take a break from the hectic end-of-the-semester activities with a short chair massage offered for free by Campus Recreation this week at the Heskett Center Lobby. Massages are available from 10 a.m.-noon until Thursday, May 9.
No shuttles on Study Day, May 10; Metro route adjusted during Finals Week
Just a reminder that shuttles will not run on Study Day, Friday, May 10. Additionally, the Hughes Metropolitan Complex route will start 45 minutes earlier to accommodate students during finals Monday, May 13, to Thursday, May 16, with a start time at 6:45 a.m.
The shuttles end their service for this semester at the end of day on Thursday, May 16.
Pay your parking citations through Food For Fines
Start your summer off right by paying off up to five parking citations through Food For Fines from today (Monday, May 6) to Friday, May 10. Donations can be dropped off in 219 RSC with a completed donation form and proof of parking quiz completion. The form and more information are available at Food For Fines.
Engineering Open House set for Friday, May 10
Now in its 64th year, the Engineering Open House is the WSU College of Engineering's annual celebration of the accomplishments of students and faculty and showcases senior design and research projects from across all engineering disciplines at WSU.
This year’s event will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, May 10, in the Experiential Engineering Building. Come and go anytime, engage with student project teams and view multiple lab demonstrations.

WSU announces spring commencement schedule, speakers
More than 2,400 students are eligible to participate in the 121st spring commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 18, at Wichita State University. Ceremonies will be held in Charles Koch Arena. Undergraduate and graduate degrees will be conferred in college ceremonies.
The public should be advised that security will be in place and plan additional time for screening by metal detector to enter the arena. Doors will open at 7 a.m. and remain open throughout the day.

Here’s what the latest WSU and WSU Tech articulation agreement means
Representatives of Wichita State University and WSU Tech signed an articulation agreement that will provide students seeking a bachelor’s degree with a seamless transfer process into WSU’s College of Applied Studies. The agreement will allow students enrolled, or formerly enrolled, in WSU Tech’s Associate of Applied Science and Technical Certificate programs to transfer credits to the Bachelor of Applied Science in the College of Applied Studies at Wichita State University.
The Bachelor of Applied Science in Workforce Leadership (WLAL) and Applied Learning is a newly approved degree offered within the College of Applied Studies. The WLAL is a response to a demand from business and industry for degrees, skills, and trainings focused on on-the-job training and building 21st century job skills, such as creativity, leadership, and collaborative problem-solving.
Additionally, the WLAL is a flexible degree focused on providing students a variety of courses, pathways, and learning options in order to meet their individual needs. Students complete a practicum, internship, and apprenticeship experiences which provide students the opportunity to earn while they learn. Employers are able to not only take an active role in helping students, but also develop the workforce of the future.
Parking lot closures for May 9-12
Thursday, May 9: John W. Bardo Celebration of Life: “It’s a Great Day to be a Shocker”
No parking lots are specifically blocked for this day, but we are expecting a lot of visitors on campus. Parking Services will be out and about to help direct visitors attending the public Celebration of Life event at 3 p.m. to available parking, which will include the parking garage.
Friday, May 10: All of lot 18 outside Brennan Hall III will be blocked off for the Appreciation Day for our Veterans event.
Thursday-Sunday, May 9-12: All of lot 3 between Devlin Hall and Cessna Stadium, and the east half of lot 5 (Green lot east of Corbin Education Center), will be blocked for the AAC track meet. These lots will be blocked off early Wednesday night, to get them cleared and set up for the event.
Wichita State set to host American championships
The Wichita State track and field program will host the American Athletic Conference outdoor championships, May 10-12, at Cessna Stadium.
In its second year in the American Athletic Conference, Wichita State will host the 2019 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The three-day meet will feature 12 women's teams and 10 men's teams.
Help wanted for Language and Comic Study
Are you interested in participating in an in-person psychological / linguistic study about comics and language? You have the opportunity to earn $10 after completing the study. We will schedule an appointment to meet in the library and administer a computer-based study that takes less than an hour.
To be eligible to participate, you must:
- Be an undergraduate student
- Have no formal musical training.
- Speak only American English (not bilingual)
- Have no learning or reading disabilities.

Final call for tours of The Suites
Tours of the Suites will conclude this Friday, May 10. Tours will resume when the building opens on Monday, June 3. At that point, interested parties may stop by the Suites front desk between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. for a Suites residence hall tour.
Tours are about 20 minutes in length, and will be offered now through Friday from 3:30-5 p.m.

Art History Awards with Randall Griffey
In partnership with the Ulrich Museum of Art, the art history program in the School of Art, Design and Creative Industries presents the first annual Art History Awards from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, May 10, at the Ulrich Museum of Art. This event celebrates the achievements of Wichita State art history students.
Award categories include outstanding individual research project, performance in art history courses and growth as an art historian. The Art History Awards also include a special recognition for teaching excellence by a Master of Fine Arts candidate in studio art. Randall Griffey will deliver the keynote address. Griffey has served as curator of modern and contemporary art for the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 2013.

Shocker Alert System adds instant National Weather Service tornado warnings
Wichita State University’s Shocker Alert System has been upgraded with instant National Weather Service tornado warnings. Tornado warnings were previously issued manually by the University Police Department, so the new system will shave minutes off the notification time.
As you may have noticed during the storms on Sunday, May 5, when the agency issues or updates a tornado warning for Sedgwick County, the alert will be automatically triggered through text message, email, RSS feed, Alertus, Shocker Alert Facebook and the Guardian App. The alert will display the tornado warning expiration time with further details about the warning available in the email channel. Shocker duo selected for NCAA Doubles Championship
Shocker duo Marta Bellucco and Fatima Bizhukova have been selected to the 2019 NCAA Doubles Championship with an at-large bid. The duo makes the 32-team draw and will compete May 20-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
2019-20 Dance Team announced
Recently the Shocker Dance Team was selected after an intense two days of learning, showcasing talent and pushing the limits. Dancers from around the country learned a chant, sideline stinger, traditional band chant, hip hop and Pom routine, and three different combinations to show off their technique. In the end, the top 17 ladies were chosen to represent Shocker Nation this year on the sidelines.
