WSU names Larisa Genin dean of Barton School of Business
Larisa Genin, associate dean of the School of Economics and Business Administration at Saint Mary’s College of California, has been named dean of the W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University, effective June 17, 2019.
“In Dr. Genin’s visits to Wichita this spring, and in discussions with those who have worked with her, we were impressed with her accomplishments, strategic approach, focus on student success, communication skills and vision for the Barton School,” said WSU Provost Richard Muma, who appointed Genin. “Faculty, staff, students and members of the business community who met her thought she would be an excellent fit for the university and the city.”
Muma said he has asked Genin to prepare to focus immediately on connecting the Barton School’s faculty and staff to WSU’s focus as an urban public research university by increasing enrollment opportunities and helping business and industry solve some of their most pressing issues.
Developing innovative curricular approaches and applied learning experiences for students, as well as raising money to support the Barton School programs, are additional priorities, Muma said.
Genin succeeds Anand Desai, who is retiring after four years as dean and 25 years in the Kansas public university system.
“I am very honored and excited to serve as the next dean of the Barton School,” Genin said. “I am confident that together as a team, we can take the school to unprecedented heights of excellence, with special emphasis on applied learning and research.”
“The WSU Foundation campaign’s tagline, ‘Shock the World,’ resonates with me,” Genin said. “I appreciate the donors who have provided strong financial support for a new business building, and I’m excited about working with students, faculty, staff and the business community to turn this vision into a launching pad for student success.”
In her role as associate dean at her current school, she provides leadership in the areas of strategic planning, accreditation, enrollment, marketing, curricular development, student experience and success, academic standards and alumni relations.
Genin has been instrumental in co-leading the development and implementation of the school’s five-year strategic plan, doubling undergraduate enrollment, redesigning academic programs, and strengthening the student experience.
She also successfully led the school’s efforts in obtaining and maintaining accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
Genin was a 2014-2015 participant in the American Council on Education Fellowship Program – a premier leadership development program focusing on preparing the next generation of senior leaders for the nation's colleges and universities.
Her scholarly interests focus on the areas of globalization, innovation, online marketing, personal branding and marketing education.
The Barton School of Business is home to the largest selection of AACSB-accredited programs in the state and is one of the few schools in the nation to have all of its undergraduate and graduate business and accounting programs fully accredited. Students have secured high-profile internships with companies such as Microsoft, Google, Koch Industries, the Mayo Clinic and the White House.
Engineering Open House today (Friday, May 10)
Now in its 64th year, the Engineering Open House is the WSU College of Engineering's annual celebration of the accomplishments of students and faculty and showcases senior design and research projects from across all engineering disciplines at WSU.
This year’s event will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. today (Friday, May 10), in the Experiential Engineering Building. Come and go anytime, engage with student project teams and view multiple lab demonstrations.
Wichita State to host American championships
The Wichita State track and field program will host the American Athletic Conference outdoor championships, May 10-12, at Cessna Stadium.
In its second year in the American Athletic Conference, Wichita State will host the 2019 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The three-day meet will feature 12 women's teams and 10 men's teams.

Relive this year's Shock the Yard Step Show
Students and community members took part in Wichita State's 10th annual Shock the Yard Step Show April 27, an event that allows organizations around the Midwestern region to show off their ability to step and grants them the opportunity to be named the best step team in the Midwest.
This fun and interactive event, hosted by the Multicultural Greek Council, has been held the past nine years and has become a Wichita State tradition.
Seeking volunteer Jump!Star performers this summer
Communities from New York to Kansas have been working with Jump!Star's creative director, George Ferrandi for the past 18 months building 12 large, lightweight illuminated sculptures made of wire and paper at this summer’s Symphony in the Flint Hills signature event Saturday, June 15, in the Flint Hills on Irma’s pasture near Bazaar, Kansas. Performers will have free admittance to this popular event.
We are seeking more than 100 participants as each sculpture requires eight-to-12 handlers. Participants are referred to as "dark matter".... do you want to be Dark Matter for an amazing, otherworldly evening experience on the beautiful, rolling Flint Hills? Of course you do!
- One full dress rehearsal on Friday, June 14, with the rest of the sculptures. (On-site in the Flint Hills. Details TBA.)
- Live performance - Two 20-30-minute sessions of processing with the sculptures after dark on Saturday, June 15th. (Rain date, Sunday, June 16)
The sculptures are very lightweight illuminated constructions, so not heavy to lift, but are basically a big paper bag we are taking to Tornado Town, so there may be some wind to deal with, in addition to gravity. We've been told the wind dies down after dark, so are counting on that!

Society of Decorative Painters to have conference and expo in Wichita
The international organization “Society of Decorative Painters” (headquarters in Wichita) will have their 47th Conference and Expo in Wichita Monday, May 13 to Saturday, May 18, at the Hyatt Regency. This is a week of painting classes and expo for artists and painters that paint in oil, acrylics, watercolor, mixed media and colored pencil.
One strong passion this organization has is community outreach. They have taken the task to paint new backpacks to be donated to St. Francis Ministries. These backpacks will go to children filled with first-night necessities when they are placed into foster care.
WSU announces spring commencement schedule, speakers
More than 2,400 students are eligible to participate in the 121st spring commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 18, at Wichita State University. Ceremonies will be held in Charles Koch Arena. Undergraduate and graduate degrees will be conferred in college ceremonies.
The public should be advised that security will be in place and plan additional time for screening by metal detector to enter the arena. Doors will open at 7 a.m. and remain open throughout the day.

Student Health Services to adjust clinic hours starting May 13
Student Health Services in 209 Ahlberg Hall will offer clinic hours from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, May 13.
Youth mentoring opportunity for three credit hours
The INSPYRE research lab (directed by Samantha Gregus) is currently recruiting undergraduate mentors for a three-hour course in the fall 2019 semester. Mentors eat lunch with an elementary school student twice each week. In return, mentors receive three hours of course credit and many great experiences.
Mentors are required to undergo background checks, have reliable transportation to and from the elementary school, and should have availability from noon-2 p.m. at least twice a week.
We do not meet regularly like a traditional class (time mentoring takes the place of class time). We do, however, have a course syllabus, class readings, and paper assignments. Mentors will receive training at the beginning of the course and a grade at the end based on attendance and completion of assignments. The Center for Management Development has an opening for a 20-hour per week student assistant for summer and fall 2019. Duties would include, but not limited to, typing and data input (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), filing, copying, running errands, answering the phone, moving tables and chairs, cleaning a classroom, interacting with customers, lifting boxes up to 30 pounds, and working an evening shift when needed. Are you interested in participating in an in-person psychological / linguistic study about comics and language? You have the opportunity to earn $10 after completing the study. We will schedule an appointment to meet in the library and administer a computer-based study that takes less than an hour.
