Student expands his 'horizons' with community-based project
On a clear day, you can see the largest mural in the world from the third-floor windows of McKnight Art Center on the Wichita State campus.
The Horizontes Project brought Columbian street artist GLeo to Wichita to paint “El Sueño Original” (the original dream) on a grain elevator in an industrial area that separates the majority African American northeast neighborhoods from the majority Latino North End. The mural depicts residents of both neighborhoods.

Youth mentoring opportunity for three credit hours
The INSPYRE research lab (directed by Samantha Gregus) is currently recruiting undergraduate mentors for a three-hour course in the fall 2019 semester. Mentors eat lunch with an elementary school student twice each week. In return, mentors receive three hours of course credit and many great experiences.
Mentors are required to undergo background checks, have reliable transportation to and from the elementary school, and should have availability from noon-2 p.m. at least twice a week.
We do not meet regularly like a traditional class (time mentoring takes the place of class time). We do, however, have a course syllabus, class readings, and paper assignments. Mentors will receive training at the beginning of the course and a grade at the end based on attendance and completion of assignments. We are interested in recruiting mentors from any college and major. For more information, contact Elissa Failes at elissa.failes@wichita.edu ASAP.
Photovoice exhibit coming Wednesday, May 22
The Photovoice exhibit focusing on the youth perspective on alternative education will be held from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, in 142 RSC. This project is based on qualitative participatory action research methodology that gives voice for the expelled and juvenile justice involved youth in the evaluation of the academic and behavioral programming at the McAdams Academy, an alternative program in Wichita.
The McAdams participants will be at the exhibit to meet you and share their stories. Light refreshments will be served.
Each week, our young participants took photos to represent how the program works, the strengths of the program and what they would recommend changing. We will present their photos, narratives, and recommendations through an interactive exhibit for the community.
Feel free to invite others and share this flyer.
The project was sponsored by MURPA and conducted by Bree Boppre (Criminal Justice), Dasha Shamrova (Social Work) and Amy Kalb (Social Work).
