From one student to another: How to navigate WSU while dealing with anxiety

The new school year is here. I’ll hold for your applause.

All joking aside, the beginning of a new semester can be scary. For many students, including me, that fear manifests itself as anxiety, the most common mental illness in the U.S.

Of the 40 million adults in the U.S. with anxiety disorders, 30 million of them first experienced symptoms before the age of 22. That means a large number of college students are dealing with them right now.

According to the 2016 National College Health Assessment administered by Wichita State’s Prevention Services Advisory Board, nearly 60 percent of WSU students had felt overwhelming anxiety in the past 12 months.

Two 2019 WSU alumni designed and developed a mobile app that contains everything they wish they had access to while in school, and now you can have it! Exclusively for the WSU community, MEBO (Main Engine Blast Off) app is now available on both app stores by searching "mebo social."

Hyatt Place hotel to break ground next week at WSU

The first hotel on the Wichita State campus is beginning construction. 

A 106-room Hyatt Place hotel will break ground next week on Wichita State’s Innovation Campus, within walking distance of the new Fuzzy’s Tacos, the Shocker Store and Starbucks. 

The groundbreaking is set for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, on 19th Street just west of Oliver. The event will kick off directly after WSU’s 10 a.m. weekly briefing in the Marcus Welcome Center. The campus community is welcome to walk over from the briefing to the groundbreaking.

Involvement Fair is coming Aug. 28

The Involvement Fair is an opportunity for Wichita State students to learn about WSU Registered Student Organizations (RSOs). The Involvement Fair is also an opportunity for RSOs to meet new students, and to collaborate with other organizations.

The Involvement Fair happens at the beginning of the fall semester on the RSC North Patio and surrounding outdoor areas. It is one of the best opportunities to get involved in campus life at Wichita State. Student organizations set up displays and have members on site talk to visitors one on one about what their organization does on campus.

Involvement in co-curricular experiences is one of the most important parts of having a successful college career! You will make friends, learn all about Wichita State, and develop invaluable skills you will use in life beyond Wichita State. There are more than 300 student organizations to choose from. Welcome back, Shockers! Hosted by various student groups and campus departments, most Welcomefest events are free and give all students a chance to get acquainted with each other, learn about the campus, and find ways to connect with the community. Here is a list of activities you definitely don’t want to miss.

KMUW interns write, report, ride scooters and explore careers in journalism

Mornings at KMUW start with a meeting in the newsroom in their Old Town office. Tom Shine and his reporters stand around a table and discuss the stories for that day and beyond. 

Some are routine – attend the mayor’s briefing or Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Others send reporters on a quest for information about diseased bats in northwest Kansas or on an electric scooter ride.

“Every time I tell someone I’m an intern at KMUW they say, ‘Wow, that awesome,’ and they think it’s a great thing, which it is,” Wichita State senior Kylie Cameron said. “I came here and I realized there was still so much to learn. Audio, radio, writing for voice. It’s definitely made me more of a jack-of-all trades.”

WSU Weekly Briefing to feature Provost Rick Muma

The WSU Weekly Briefing will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, in the Marcus Welcome Center. The featured speaker will be Provost Rick Muma.

Zach Gearhart, director of Government Relations at WSU, will give the overall university update.

The briefing will be livestreamed and available later that day at WSU Weekly Briefing. There will be time for questions following the briefing.

Japanese class starts soon; Japanese Movie Night tonight (Wednesday, Aug. 21)

Are you a fan of Japanese animation?  Starting this fall, WSU will offer JAPN 300E: Japanese Anime and Manga for the first time. The class is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about these two forms of media, regardless of Japanese-language experience. We will watch several animated movies and shows, from classics like “Astro Boy” to modern phenomena like “Your Name.” The class will be offered on the WSU South Campus from 1-3:30 p.m. Thursdays. There are no prerequisites required.  

Join the Japanese Culture Association for a Japanese Movie Night at 7:30 p.m. today (Wednesday, Aug. 21) in 301 RSC. We’ll watch “Mirai.” Hope to see you there!

Get cool at the Foam Drop Dance Party

The sun is down and the foam is cool. We'll have foam cannons to celebrate and a DJ to set the mood at 9 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Aug. 22), in the RSC east courtyard (Rain location: RSC Beggs Ballroom, third floor). Get lost in the music and enjoy an experience of a lifetime! Let's kickoff the school year right and soak up the fun.

Come and learn about the history of U.S. and Hispanic traders in Kansas

Sierra Cordoba, a Colombian-American writer and researcher, will present on U.S. and Hispanic traders on the Santa Fe Trail in the 19th Century at 5 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Aug. 22), in 313 RSC. This talk is part of the Latin American and LatinX Studies series, organized by the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures.

Tour Ablah Library!

Want to learn more about University Libraries? Come take a tour of Ablah Library! Tour times are 4:00 pm Thursday, August 29 and noon Friday, August 30. Come look at the new and exciting spaces being offered! Peek inside the One-Button Studio used for video recording. Play in the VR Zone. Walk inside the sound booth. Learn what software is available to create multi-media projects. We will also look at group and individual study rooms and selected collections. Tours will begin at the Circulation Desk on the main floor of Ablah Library.

New look for library software

The University Libraries has made changes to the SmartSearch and Interlibrary Loan platforms this August. Try out the new look and functionality! We welcome your feedback.

SmartSearch now has a cleaner interface, and can be accessed as before through the University Libraries’ homepage. To access any saved items you may have you may log in to the old SmartSearch interface. We recommend you export your items into a citation manager (such as EndNote or Zotero) to preserve them long term.

The new Interlibrary Loan service shows you all of your requests on a single page, links to articles, and details about the status of your requests and item due dates. Note that your request history in ILLiad cannot be imported into the new system, but you will be able to login to ILLiad to access it until October 1, 2019.

We hope that these changes enhance your library experience and streamline how you manage your requests!

Special exhibition on WSU campus showcases artist's commemoration of NASA Apollo missions

From now to Nov. 17, a piece of space race history is viewable on Wichita State University’s campus. A special exhibition titled “Lowell Nesbitt: Apollo 1969” is on display at the Experiential Engineering Building, and features prints made by artist Lowell Nesbitt.

Nesbitt was commissioned by NASA in 1969 to commemorate its Apollo 9 and 13 missions as part of the NASA Art Program. The exhibit was made possible through a new program at WSU’s Ulrich Museum of Art called Ulrich Connections, which ties the museum’s robust exhibition and event programming more directly to the world outside its walls.

10-week series designed for high-potential professionals

The Mini MBA® provides a practical foundation in current business theory and practices. Through case studies, lecture and interactive class sessions, you will obtain the knowledge you need to succeed within your organization. This learning experience offers a concise and dynamic approach, which rapidly prepares you to handle new scenarios as a leader.

Free Poker starts Friday, Aug. 23

Shocker Cheer Team awarded top honors at UCA Camp

Recently the Wichita State Cheer Team and Wu traveled to Estes Park, Colo. to participate at the final Universal Cheerleaders Association College Cheer Camp. During the days there they worked on perfecting their sidelines, band dances and timeout routine with UCA instructors from around the country.

The cheer team ended camp on a high note taking home top honors in every competition while going against several D1 Power 5 Schools. Those awards include:
1st place Band Dance
1st place Sideline
2nd place Timeout Routine
1st place Overall Game Day
