Academic Convocation schedule of events

Academic Convocation will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in Wilner Auditorium, with the book signing and breakfast preceding the event at 8:30 a.m. in the Ulrich Museum.

Join your classmates as we kick off the academic year with convocation and Bill Burnett, the co-author of the WSU Reads book “Designing Your Life.” He will host two lectures from 11 a.m.-noon, and 1- 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11,  in the CAC Theater.

Get excited to join fellow classmates, faculty and staff for this year’s event that you will not want to miss.

2019 Academic Convocation

Study Abroad Fair coming Sept. 17

Are you interested in studying abroad? Do you want to learn more about study abroad programs offered by Wichita State University? 

Come to our Study Abroad Fair from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, on the first floor, RSC, to visit more than 20 different informational tables and hear about student experiences. Each student who attends our fair will receive a small prize and be entered to win a $500 study abroad scholarship.

RSC Unplugged features Stringhounds

Stop by the Rhatigan Student Center every Wednesday for the live music series, RSC Unplugged. RSC Unplugged will feature Stringhounds from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 4) in the RSC’s Starbucks Lounge. Grab a cup of coffee and relax with some great music!

Dog days of summer with the WSUPD

Come and have a hot dog on the WSU Police Department, and meet some of the officers working on campus. Officers will begin serving free hot dogs at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 4), on the north side of the Rhatigan Student Center until they run out. Veggie dogs will be available as well.

Back to Business Bash coming Thursday, Sept. 5

Barton School Dean's Ambassadors invites all business students to join us in the RSC East Courtyard from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 5) at the RSC east courtyard, for the Back to Business Bash!

Celebrate National Cheese Pizza Day with Student Activities Council and Campus Credit Union by stopping by from 4-6 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 5), on the north patio of the Rhatigan Student Center. Come and enjoy some pizza while the supply lasts.

Shockers After Dark set for Sept. 13

Student Affairs invites students, faculty, and staff to Shockers After Dark from 8-10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, on the first floor, Rhatigan Student Center, and Shocker Sports Grill and Lanes.

Come to the RSC for two hours of fantastic free fun! Activities include intuitive readers, a poker tournament, gaming, BINGO, bowling, and karaoke. There will also be free food and prizes. The first 150 attendees will receive a glow-in-the-dark T-shirt.

WSU Weekly Briefing to feature Kimberly Engber and Honors College

The WSU Weekly Briefing will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, in the Marcus Welcome Center. The featured speaker will be Kimberly Engber providing an Honors College update.

Zach Gearhart, director of Government Relations at WSU, will give the overall university update.

The briefing will be livestreamed and available later that day at WSU Weekly Briefing. There will be time for questions following the briefing.

D.C. internship helps Wichita State senior work with voting issues

Alejandro Arias Esparza believes every vote counts and he wants everyone to use that right.

“It’s all we have,” he said. “It’s like the only power we truly have in our democracy. We can protest and scream and we can yell all we want, but it’s not going to mean anything if the same people keep getting reelected.”

His belief comes from his appreciation for what life in the United States offers a student who was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico. He moved to California around 11 and to Wichita a year later. He attended East High School and is a senior political science major at Wichita State.

Last spring, Arias Esparza worked as an intern at FairVote in Washington, D.C., an internship funded by former Kansas governor Mark and Stacy Parkinson. The internship gave him practical experience in research, writing and meeting people that can help him help others vote and grow active in their communities.

Employability (Made) in Germany

Wichita State University, Berlin School of Economics and Law, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and UAS7 are pleased to invite you to a discussion of skills and career options related to Germany at Wichita State University.

This networking opportunity and luncheon for students, employers, and educators will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the Shirley Beggs Ballroom, Rhatigan Student Center. An RSVP is required by Friday, Sept. 6 at Employability (Made) in German. 

The event is part of “The Year of German-American Friendship” or “Deutschlandjahr 2018/19,” and showcases Germany as one of the leading countries in dual-study programs, apprenticeships, university-industry collaborations, and applied teaching and research. Speakers will focus on the Germany-related business landscape, careers and skill-enhancing opportunities in the Wichita area, such as internships at local companies and academic exchanges with partner educational institutions in Germany.

Teen study participants needed to help explore perceptions of relationships

Are you a parent of a teenager? The INSPYRE research lab is exploring what makes relationships healthy or unhealthy in adolescence 

Purpose of this study: To explore perceptions of healthy and unhealthy relationships in teens 

Procedures: After parental consent and teen assent has been obtained, teens will be asked to participate in a survey that gathers information on demographics and perceptions of dating relationships.

Campus invited to an open house in the newly expanded Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College space in Shocker Hall on Sept. 12

All students, staff, and faculty are invited to be a part of the formal dedication of the newly expanded space for the Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College in Shocker Hall on Thursday, Sept. 12. Remarks will begin at noon, with light refreshments immediately following. Come see the new student space! The open house will be hosted by the Honors College Student Council until 2 p.m.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion is excited to start the LGBTQ+ Shocker Ambassadors. Are you interested in building the foundation of LGBTQ+ Ambassadors? The ambassador program will help to amplify the voices of LGBTQ students while creating a visible network of student leaders. Join an organization that will provide leadership, mentorship, and advocacy opportunities at Wichita State, and in the greater Wichita community.

Office of Research – Organizational Changes

In an effort to better reflect its primary focus areas, the Office of Research and Technology Transfer is rebranding to The Office of Research and Economic Development. The office will still handle technology transfer, but the name change reflects the important role Wichita State plays in economic development.

John Tomblin, WSU vice president for research and economic development, has also appointed two additional associate vice presidents: Debbie Franklin for strategic initiatives and Tonya Witherspoon for industry engagement and applied learning.

KMUW to host mayoral candidate debate as part of Engage ICT

KMUW is hosting a mayoral debate as part of Engage ICT, in partnership with the Wichita Eagle and the Kansas Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Candidates Jeff Longwell and Brandon Whipple will answer questions, including those submitted in advance by KMUW listeners, on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
