Officer Efrain Rueda

Officer Rueda receives ribbon for going above and beyond

Shocker Nation is full of amazing people. One of those people is WSU Police Officer Efrain Rueda, who has received a University Police ribbon for two outstanding actions. This past spring he stayed for hours with a student during the night as she dealt with a painful situation with her roommate. And more recently, upon finding a homeless woman on campus during a thunderstorm, he paid for her to stay in a hotel for the night. Thank you for all you do, Officer Rueda!

Sept. 11 Remembrance Ceremony in the CAC Theater

Chavius Lewis

Chavius Lewis

On Sept 11, 2001, the United States was the target of a terrorist attack which killed 2,996 people and injured more than 6,000 others. The attack was coordinated by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda, and proved to be the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of the United States.

This event plunged the United States in a War of Terror, where we invaded Afghanistan to depose the Taliban. We still fight this war today, and it has changed our country forever.

As we remember the lives lost and those first responders who came to their aid, we are holding a one-hour memorial service in honor of their memories at 6 p.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 11) in the CAC Theater.

Chavius Lewis, commanding officer, USS Wichita, will be among those participating in the ceremony, hosted by WSU Military and Veteran Services.

Alison Roets exhibit at Ulrich Sept. 12, 2019

Ulrich 'Solving for X' exhibition embraces accessibility for blind, visually- and mobility-impaired

The exhibition, “Solving for X=Accessibility: GuideBeacon,” is one of three new shows that the Ulrich Museum of Art will unveil at its Fall Exhibition Opening Party, which will be held at the museum from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12.

Alison Roets has been legally blind since birth. A senior from Derby majoring in Strategic Communications at Wichita State University, Roets is also a student employee at WSU’s Ulrich Museum of Art.

Pictured above: WSU senior Alison Roets listens to a vivid description of a Roger Shimomura painting in the Ulrich Museum. (Image courtesy of the Ulrich Museum.)

Read full story on "Solving for X"

“At first I thought it was a little weird to have a partially-blind person working the front desk of an art museum,” she said. Weird mostly because Roets said she doesn’t visit art museums. Although she can make out shapes and colors if she gets up-close to objects, most art museums just aren’t set up to accommodate her.

“It’s not something that’s thought about often since art is such a visual subject,” she said.

Still, Roets and her guide dog, Piper, have become popular figures at the Ulrich, where she spends her shifts telling others how they can view the various galleries that, so far, she has not been able to fully experience.
However, that will soon change thanks to an exhibition sponsored by Envision, a Wichita-based organization with locations in 11 states, whose mission is to improve the quality of life and provide inspiration and opportunity for people who are blind or visually impaired.

The Ulrich is working with Vinod Namboodiri, professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer science at WSU and senior scientist at the Envision Research Institute, who is developing GuideBeacon, a wayfinding app that uses bluetooth beacons to assist blind and visually impaired (BVI) people in navigating indoor and outdoor spaces.

The installation of GuideBeacon at the Ulrich is an exciting new application of the accessibility technology that is being collaboratively developed between Envision and WSU through a National Science Foundation grant.

For the exhibition, the Ulrich will transform its Grafly Gallery into a test site for GuideBeacon by offering multi-sensory access to a selection of works of art from the Museum’s permanent collection. The five works from the collection will each be displayed next to touchable tactile graphics of the work produced by WSU’s Instructional Design and Access team. GuideBeacon will be loaded with audio guides that provide vivid descriptions and contemporary contexts for each piece.

Ulrich Director Leslie Brothers, who invented the “Solving for X” series, said the exhibition is a commitment to joining other art museums around the world in trying to make art more accessible to everyone.

“We will move forward from this test site exhibition to include vivid descriptions and tactile graphics for all of our future shows,” Brothers said. “It’s part of our commitment to make the Museum more inclusive.”

Roets, meanwhile, said she is very excited for the exhibition to start.

“I hope it brings a ton of the BVI community to the museum, and that they recognize the Ulrich as a place willing to take the extra steps,” she said.

Teachable Moments at the Ulrich fall 2019

'Teachable Moments' exhibition at Ulrich showcases cutting-edge art by WSU faculty

From photos of shooting range debris to photorealist paintings based on printer glitches, an upcoming exhibition at the Ulrich Museum of Art will showcase some of the cutting-edge art works created by Wichita State University faculty.

A tradition in its forty-fourth year on the WSU campus, the exhibition, known as the Faculty Biennial, represents the breadth of creative work and research being undertaken by the faculty of the School of Art, Design and Creative Industries (ADCI), including drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and new media.

The exhibition will be one of three new shows the Ulrich Museum unveils this week at its Fall Exhibition Opening Party, which will be held at the Museum from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 12. The opening party is free and open to the public.

This year's biennial theme, “Teachable Moments,” seeks to prompt reflections and start conversations about the role of both formal education and informal learning in creative work. It also aims to underscore the relationships between the faculty's art-making and research and the time spent mentoring WSU students in and out of the classroom.

Ulrich curator Ksenya Gurshtein said the biennial show helped fulfill part of the Museum’s mission to present some of the most interesting and important trends in contemporary art.

“The faculty biennial is a great way to see in one show what’s happening across a really broad range of media,” she said. “It’s also a great chance to see how aesthetic and social concerns that have national and even global relevance come to bear on the work of artists here in Wichita, and impact the WSU students who study with them.”

Jeff Pulaski, Director and Associate Professor of Graphic Design, is the chair of ADCI, which helped organize the exhibition. He is also an artist whose work will be on display in the exhibition. Pulaski said the show provided examples of "approachable research" being done by WSU's art faculty.

"We have a great faculty here--many of them show their work across the country and internationally," Pulaski said. "This is our opportunity to show off the talent we have at the university."

The exhibition will be accompanied by short, informal lunch-hour talks throughout the fall to be given by each of the 15 faculty artists on display. There will also be a one-hour research presentation on October 1 by Dr. Brittany Lockard, Assistant Professor of Art History at WSU, who will deliver a talk titled "The Secret Language of Food and Women's Art." The lunch-hour talks will take place on Tuesdays from 12:00-1:00 p.m. between September 17th and November 12th, with two talks happening each Tuesday.

Physical therapy students looking for research project subjects

Students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Wichita State, and their research advisor, Barbara Smith, PhD, PT, are looking for participants for our research study on the effects posterior pelvic tilting (the flattening of the back in sitting or standing) on core strength and endurance. Your participation in this study may help the field of physical therapy to help better understand core strength / endurance and its effects on the body.

Find out more about the study and how to participate.

If chosen to participate in our study, you will be required to come to the Wichita State University Old Town Campus at 213 N. Mead, on Friday, Sept. 20 or Saturday, Sept. 21, for an initial evaluation.

You will be able to select a 30-minute time block that is convenient for your schedule. At the initial evaluation, you will be asked to complete the health history questionnaire that you filled out in the screening process. You will perform a muscle endurance test for your back muscles and a strength test for your abdominal muscles. At this time you will be assigned to a group, which may include an eight-week posterior pelvic-tilting exercise program starting at 25 reps, progressing to 50, 75, and 100, every two weeks. At the four-week mark you will submit a video check-in via text or email to check for proper form.

These exercises should take no more than 10-15 minutes per day. All materials and instructions will be provided. Each group will be required to return to the Wichita State University Old Town Campus on Nov 15-16 for an eight-week re-evaluation lasting about 10-15 minutes.

If you are interested in participating, click here to complete a survey. It will only take about 15-20 minutes. Once you have completed the survey, you will receive an email with more information within five-to-seven business days.

Your participation is graciously appreciated, voluntary, and your responses will remain confidential. Should you have any questions / concerns, feel free to email Ethan Winter at ecwinter@shockers.wichita.edu or Barbara Smith at barb.smith@wichita.edu.
