A message from President-elect Golden
My wife, Dina, and I are grateful for the warm welcome we received on campus when I was elected Oct. 31 by the Kansas Board of Regents. I'm looking forward to getting to know and work with you after I formally become your President in January.
With the job comes tremendous responsibilities for ensuring that Wichita State University is providing the highest quality education and impactful research, both now and in the future.
To help me prepare, I have requested the leadership of our faculty, staff and students to deliberately review important performance indicators for many crucial aspects of our operations.
I have asked leaders to engage their teams in bold thinking about how to propel this great university to meet the demands of the new decade we are entering.
You'll find here the very detailed questions I have put forward, including open-ended ones that I hope will lead to critical thinking about our future.
I will share the results with you once all the responses are compiled and will keep you informed of our progress, together, as a unified team.

Longtime Shocker fan excited to be an adult learner at WSU
Eric Harrison is a jack of all trades and has many talents. After dabbling in construction work, being a mason and making stained glass artwork, he realized he was missing an education. For Eric, coming back to school at the age of 66 is the best thing he has done. Currently, he is getting his degree in philosophy and minors in English and psychology.

You are invited to a free documentary screening, ‘Chicago at the Crossroad’ today (Wednesday, Nov. 6)
You are invited to a free documentary screening hosted by multiple campus and community partners of “Chicago at The Crossroad,” a feature film that explores the history of housing segregation and violence in Chicago and America. A panel discussion will follow.
Film synopsis: Much is said about the violence that plagues segregated communities. But what is known about the systems that created it, the laws that isolated it, and the policies that abandoned it? And how does a city heal from decades of heartbreak and pain? A feature documentary filmed over the course of 15 years, “Chicago at the Crossroad” answers these questions, offering a penetrating look at the incessant segregation, violence, and disastrous public-policy decisions that affect Chicago and cities across the country.
The evening will start with a meet-and-greet, and then the documentary will begin at 6:30 p.m. today (Wednesday, Nov. 6). Stick around for the panel after the film at 7:45 p.m. The panel will focus on both the documentary and its parallels to Wichita. The panel will include Brian Schodorf, producer and director of the film; Robert Weems, Williard W. Garvey Distinguished Professor of Business History; Angeline Johnson, Chief Opportunity Zone Officer; Brandon Johnson, City Councilmen District 1; and Lavonta Williams, former Councilmember for District 1 and serving as the moderator.

Join FGCC and SAC during the First Generation Student Appreciation Week from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in 233 Rhatigan Student Center. Join and hear from keynote speaker Richard Taylor Jr., a TRiO SSS Alum who has overcome obesity, depression, suicie, failing in college and domestic abuse. Through his struggle, his challenges have struck a change within people from different walks of life. His message breaks cultural boundaries and the bias in social norms.
Litigation attorney to speak about case involving lost Apollo 11 samples
The Wichita Space Initiative welcomes litigation attorney Christopher McHugh, who will give a talk "The Legal Battle Over Apollo 11 Samples," at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in 319 RSC.
In 1969, the United States met the impossible challenge leveled by President John. F. Kennedy eight years earlier, to land a man on the moon and return him safely to earth. The heroism of the moment culminated in Neil Armstrong’s collection of the first lunar rocks into the Apollo 11 Lunar Sample Contingency bag.
Embodying the self-sacrifice, courage, ingenuity and fortitude of an entire nation, the Lunar Contingency bag was the ultimate trophy for the winner of the space race. It was like the Lombardi trophy, the Stanley Cup, and every Olympic Gold Medal, all rolled up into one and multiplied by a thousand ... and NASA lost it! This is the story of the Chicago woman who found it almost 50 years later, and her battle with NASA over a national treasure."

The YMCA will host group exercise classes at WSU this month
The Steve Clark YMCA and Student Wellness Center on the Campus of Wichita State University is really excited to be moving on-campus and wanted to get an early start with group exercise so we're hosting a series of POP-UP CLASSES taught by some of our most-dynamic instructors to help you get ready for finals, the Winter Break, and your on-campus Y opening in January 2020.

Human Factors Exploration Day this Friday
Are you interested in the intersection between people and technology? Then don’t miss Human Factors Exploration Day from noon-2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, in 233 RSC.
The field of Human Factors focuses on designing usable technology that maximizes human performance. This includes autonomous vehicles, video games, mobile devices, web sites, healthcare systems, and more. The Human Factors psychology program is having an information session for students interested in adding Human Factors to their skill set.
Come and learn about our undergrad Certificate in Human Factors, as well as our Ph.D. program. See demonstrations from our six research labs, and meet with faculty and students. There will be food, too!

Koskei repeats as champion, leads Shockers to runner-up finish
Winny Koskei claimed her second consecutive conference title as the Wichita State
men's and women's cross country teams competed at the American Athletic Conference
Cross Country Championships last week.
Koskei won this meet a year ago, and she repeated her success this year, finishing
in first. She crossed the line in 20:15, which nearly beat her season-best time of
20:14.5 from the Bill Dellinger Invitational.
Rebekah Topham finished as the conference runner-up. She outkicked Tulsa's Caitlin
Klopfer down the stretch to finish the 6K in 20:29. That time is a new season best
for the steeplechase All-American.

Submit to Mikrokosmos Literary Journal and attend a free literary reading
Mikrokosmos Literary Journal, WSU's beloved literary magazine, is seeking poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and comic submissions from WSU students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Deadline to submit is Nov. 1.
Mikrokosmos is also hosting a fiction and poetry contest, judged by nationally-known fiction writer Amy Hempel and poet Sam Sax. The deadline for submitting to this contest is Nov. 15. Submission guidelines at http://mikrokosmosjournal.com/submit-2/. There will be cash prizes.

From noon-1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, in 261Jabara Hall, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science will host electrical engineering speaker Altaf Ul-amin for a CAPPLab Visitor Tech-Talk titled, “Applications of KNApSAcK Database and DPClus Algorithm: Plants to Metabolites to Target Proteins in the Context of Jamu Medicines and IBD Gene Prediction.”
Distinguished organist to perform on the great Marcussen organ in Wiedemann Hall
The Rie Bloomfield Organ Series presents its second Distinguished Guest Artist, Dexter Kennedy, winner of the prestigious "Grand Prix" of the Chartres International Organ Competition, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Wiedemann Hall.
From Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Kennedy is a brilliant concert organist with degrees from Oberlin College and Yale University. As a church musician, Kennedy currently serves as the Assistant Organist of Christ Church Grosse Pointe (Michigan), where he serves as the principal organist for all choral services and concerts and directs the training of the novice boy and girl choristers.

Enroll for a service-learning course in psychology
The INSPYRE research lab, directed by Samantha Gregus, is recruiting undergraduate mentors for a 3-hour service-learning course for Psychology and Problems in Society (PSY 416) for the spring 2020 semester.
Prior to enrolling in PSY 416, mentors are required to pass an interview, background check, have reliable transportation and lunch availability from noon-2 p.m. at least twice a week and class from 3:30-6 p.m. on Mondays.
We have a course syllabus, class readings, and paper assignments. Mentors will receive training at the beginning of the course and a grade at the end based on attendance and completion of assignments. We are interested in recruiting mentors from any college and major. For more information, please contact the INSPYRE research lab at inspyre@wichita.edu as soon as possible.
Join USPTO and University Libraries for Trademark Tuesday on Nov. 12
The Rocky Mountain Regional U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will host an interactive session with experts from the USPTO's Trademark Assistance Center (TAC), which is based at USPTO headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in 217 Ablah Library. During this program, TAC experts will provide an introduction to trademark basics and discuss the trademark application process.
To get the most out of this event, we recommend participants view informational videos regarding trademark registration before the session, and prepare questions to ask the trademark experts.

Wichita State’s undergraduate certificate in assistive technology and accessible design is an interdisciplinary program useful for ANY major wanting to create innovations that improve learning, working and daily living for people with disabilities.
Students will learn from faculty across campus and work with service providers to design and create products and equipment such as communication boards, specialized learning materials, mounting systems, electronic devices, walkers, pencil holders, screen readers, communication programs and much more.

Shocker Volleyball pays tribute to the military
Help Shocker Volleyball pay tribute to all those who help protect both home and abroad on Military Appreciation Day at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10. The Shockers will take on Memphis. Free admission for all service men and women in uniform or with military ID. It is also Shocker Family Day - get four tickets, four hot dogs, four bags of popcorn and four drinks for only $32. Student tickets are free.

Second-annual 3MT Showcase to be held Nov. 15
Celebrate the second-annual WSU Graduate School Showcase of student oral presentations of original research for the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Oral Showcase Competition from 3-5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, in 233 RSC. Participants were selected through video submission and nominations. The first-place winner of the showcase competition will attend the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools 3MT Competition meeting in the spring.
Help spread kindness during World Kindness Week, Nov. 11-15
World Kindness Week is coming Nov 11-15, and here at CAPS, we are hoping to spread some goodwill throughout campus with the help from each department. Each day, the Counseling and Prevention Services social media will post content to engage students, and we would love if your department could either share those posts on your respective social media, or share your own posts fostering kindness. Things we will post include positive messages, a Buzzfeed-style kindness quiz, philanthropic videos, memes about helping, etc. We will use #WSUWeSupportU and #ShockerKindnessWeek.
