WSU Opera Theater to present the North American premiere of Holocaust opera ‘The Path to Heaven’
The Wichita State Opera Theater and the WSU Symphony Wind Ensemble will present the North American premiere of “The Path to Heaven” later this month. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, in Miller Concert Hall, Duerksen Fine Arts Center.
The one-act opera tells the story of young people as they face the horrors of the holocaust, and how their lives were changed after the liberation of Europe. The piece is especially relevant given the recent 80th anniversary of the invasion of Poland and 75th anniversary of D-Day.
Alan Held, the Ann and Dennis Ross Faculty of Distinction in Opera, directs the WSU Opera Theater. Timothy Shade will conduct the performance.
The performance of this opera is significant in a number of ways.
It’s semi-staged, meaning that it will use a limited number of projections, props and costumes. The opera will also include multimedia presentations.
While a full orchestra accompanies most operas, a smaller wind ensemble will accompany this one.
Contributors from across the world will arrive at WSU before and during the performance to witness its unfolding.
Adam Gorb, composer of the opera, will visit WSU from England during the final week of rehearsals to lecture, observe and share insight with student performers.
Performers also received input from a former docent of the National Holocaust Museum, as well as local Jewish community members.

Don’t miss the WSU Tech Holiday Market this Saturday, Nov. 16
You are invited to the 5th Annual WSU Tech Holiday Market at the west end of the Harry Street Mall from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16. It will be held in the WSU Tech Student Commons, with vendors selling a variety of items. It is free to shop, although food donations will be gratefully accepted for the Student Food Pantry to help combat food insecurity among students.

Enroll for a service-learning course in psychology
The INSPYRE research lab, directed by Samantha Gregus, is recruiting undergraduate mentors for a 3-hour service-learning course for Psychology and Problems in Society (PSY 416) for the spring 2020 semester.
Prior to enrolling in PSY 416, mentors are required to pass an interview, background check, have reliable transportation and lunch availability from noon-2 p.m. at least twice a week and class from 3:30-6 p.m. on Mondays.
We have a course syllabus, class readings, and paper assignments. Mentors will receive training at the beginning of the course and a grade at the end based on attendance and completion of assignments. The Career Development Center is hosting another workshop for students in our Career Readiness Series: Tech Savvy and Oral / Written Communication today from 3-4 p.m. today (Wednesday, Nov. 13) in Brennan Hall III.
Employers are looking for Wichita State graduates to be career ready – meaning graduates know how to use their talents, strengths and interests. Being career ready means recognizing and demonstrating the competencies identified by employers that are crucial to a successful transition into the workplace.
Our workshops are designed to help students understand the meaning of these competencies, learn how to identify and exhibit these skills and how to further develop them right now.
Department of Philosophy Colloquium Series to feature talk by Sheri Wells-Jensen
Sheri Wells-Jensen, associate professor of linguistics at Bowling Green State University, will present “Cripping the Trip to Space: How Disabled Astronauts Will Save Space Colonization.” Her talk is part of the Department of Philosophy Colloquium Series from 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in 218 McKinley Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
Wells-Jensen specializes in linguistics, and is the Coordinator of the TESOL Certificate, and Coordinator of the Undergraduate Linguistic Minor.

Submit to Mikrokosmos Literary Journal and attend a free literary reading
Mikrokosmos Literary Journal, WSU's beloved literary magazine, is seeking poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and comic submissions from WSU students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Deadline to submit is Nov. 1.
Mikrokosmos is also hosting a fiction and poetry contest, judged by nationally-known fiction writer Amy Hempel and poet Sam Sax. The deadline for submitting to this contest is Friday, Nov. 15. Submission guidelines at http://mikrokosmosjournal.com/submit-2/. There will be cash prizes.

The WSU Weekly Briefing will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in the Marcus Welcome Center. The featured speaker will be Neal Allen, chair and associate professor of political science at Wichita State, talking about successful applied learning opportunities for WSU students.
Tracee Friess, director of communication for Research & Economic Development, will give the overall university update.
The briefing will be livestreamed and available later that day at WSU Weekly Briefing. There will be time for questions following the briefing.
Talk in Language and Linguistics Colloquium Series features Kathy Stewart
We invite all of you to the second talk in the fall 2019 Language and Linguistics Colloquium Series. Kathy Stewart, assistant director and interpreter coordinator, Office of Disability Services, will give a talk at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in 211 Hubbard Hall. The talk is titled "HOLME- The Five Basic Components of ASL in Linguistics." This event is free and open to the public.
HOLME stands for Handshape, Orientation of the palm, Location, Movement, and Expression. A change in any of these five parts of ASL linguistics changes the meaning of the sign. The audience will be encouraged to get out of their comfort zones, learn some signs, and see how the slightest change could have a big impact on what they’re trying to say.

HCEA Cybersecurity Speaker Series
Engineering in times of Global Warming
Ikram Ahmed
Ikram Ahmed, associate professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering at WSU, will be the speaker in the next ME Seminar from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, in 128 Jabara Hall.
This presentation will be divided into three parts: (i) A brief review of our current understanding of Accelerated Anthropogenic Global Climate Change; (ii) The role and responsibilities of Mechanical Engineers in this crisis; and (iii) Dr. Ahmed's current research focus.
Bio: Dr. Ahmed joined WSU in 2000 after finishing his postdoctoral appointment at the University of Connecticut's Institute of Materials Science, where he investigated plasma sprayed coatings for turbine blades with nano-structured ceramics. He earned his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 1997. His research expertise is modeling and simulation of transport processes using computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer. Currently he is working on simulation of atmospheric boundary layers for studying wind farm siting and optimization.

You are eligible to take this survey if you are a member of the immigrant community living in Wichita, Kansas. We are recruiting research participants to help us understand more about health in the local immigrant community.
The survey will ask questions about mental health (i.e. “Was it hard to get going?”), demographic questions (i.e. “What is your race?”), immigration-related questions (i.e. “What is your country of origin?”), and your engagement in customs and activities from the culture of the country that you are from and U.S. culture.
This survey is available in English, Spanish, and Swahili. Your participation is voluntary.

Cadman Art Gallery accepting submissions for spring 2020 exhibition
Cadman Art Gallery Spring 2020 Exhibition accepts submissions from students of all backgrounds. The gallery is seeking applicants to hold their own exhibit for spring 2020. Students may apply for an individual exhibit or may join together with others. Exhibitors are not limited by media or style. Past artists have exhibited digital media, graphic design, collections, paintings, sculptures, photography and more. Applications must be submitted by Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Youth night and volleyball giveaway at Shocker Volleyball this Friday!
Shocker Volleyball takes on Tulsa at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at Charles Koch Arena. It is youth night, so all children 12 and under get in free with the purchase of an adult ticket. The first 1,500 fans will receive a Shocker volleyball courtesy of Rotek Services. Free admission for students with a current WSU ID. Come support the Shockers in their last home game of the season!
Learn the process of writing a term paper in 1-credit course this spring
University Libraries is offering LASI 170 Introduction to Library Research again this spring. This is a 1-credit 8-week course offered both hybrid (in person weekly) and online. This course will take you through each step in the process of writing a term paper: choosing a topic, locating relevant information from a variety of sources, organizing the information and creating the bibliography. Section 21859 (online) is offered in the first eight weeks. Sections 26470 (Thursdays at 12:30-1:45 p.m.) and 21658 (online) start March 12.
