Learn how to use BeoShock, The High-Performance Computing Cluster at Wichita State
Beoshock new user training with expert Kyle Hutson, BeoShock System Administrator, will be available at 3 p.m. Friday, April 24 via Zoom.
Agenda: The first hour will be an introduction to Linux and HPC in general. It will be mostly show-and-tell, discussing overarching concepts. This will be particularly useful for people coming to Beoshock from a Windows or Mac background.
The second hour will be more hands-on. We will discuss Beoshock in particular, how to submit a job, request specific resources, etc. Have your computer ready to log in. We won't get into the complexities of writing multi-node code, but we will talk about using some of them.
Background: The HPC cluster is available to all WSU constituents, and also those outside of WSU who are KBOR constituents. It is jointly administered between WSU, KanREN (Kansas Research and Education Network), and Kansas State.
In order to obtain an account on BeoShock, new users (students, faculty, and WSU partners) can request access at New BeoShock User.
The system is “bring your own software,” although we do have a few typical software packages already installed. Contact the BeoShock Team at hpcadmin@wichita.edu for more information.
Want to contribute to the cluster and obtain priority access? Obtain a budgetary estimate.

COVID-19 creates new challenges for home health care workers
While hospitals and doctors’ offices are seen as the battlegrounds against COVID-19, there’s another group of medical professionals who are also on the front line: home health care workers.
Dr. Brian Miller – director of therapy and of for Wichita-based Love My Nurse Home Health and owner of Miller Contract Therapy – played a vital role in his patients’ health care, even before the pandemic hit.
“I am responsible for ensuring our patients receive appropriate health care interventions, which include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and social work,” said Dr. Miller, who graduated from Wichita State University in 2011 with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.
But COVID-19 brought a new set of concerns and challenges to Miller’s home health care colleagues.

Resources available to support students, staff, and community during this challenging time
We are living and working in a time of change and disruption. Not only disruption of what we do and how we do it, but disruptions in relationships integral to our personal and professional lives. As a result of these circumstances, we may experience anxiety, stress, sadness, loneliness, grief, and so on. Connecting with people who share similar experiences during this time can be critical for our physical and emotional health.
To help you navigate these changing times, the WSU Community Engagement Institute has added a list of resources to the Kansas Support Groups Website. This includes information on resources related to physical and mental health, self-care, safety, and more.
The website also houses an online database with information on various local, state and national support groups and resources. This database is available year-round and is searchable by county or topic.
Find resources related to COVID-19 and others at http://supportgroupsinkansas.org/coronavirus or email supportgroups@wichita.edu for more information.
Students represent WSU at regional conference
Beta Alpha Psi is the national academic fraternity for accounting, finance and MIS students. Members must attend professional meetings with business leaders and complete volunteering hours. BAP provides an opportunity for these students to network with area businesses and obtain internships and ultimately full-time positions. BAP hosts two Meet the Firms events during the academic year and more than 35 firms attend. The event is open to all Barton School of Business students, and they can bring resumes and network with employers.
Officers who attended regionals early in the semester were Nathan Hayden, Sayed Bari, Will Davis and Josh Freeman. They participated in a national competition by giving a presentation on how BAP students engage in the community and nonprofit activities.
At Christmas 2019, BAP worked with the Salvation Army by adopting four families and providing meals and toys for the children. Members learn soft skills, such as interviewing techniques, resume building, business communication, business etiquette and ethics. They also have an opportunity to meet and visit with business professionals, which can lead to internships and job opportunities, not only just after graduation but three-to-five years in the future with continued networking.
