Interim President Rick Muma congratulates College of Health Professions for 50th anniversary
Interim President Rick Muma sent a congratulatory message to the College of Health Professions’ community as the college celebrates the 50th anniversary of providing health care education at Wichita State. Muma previously served as chair and professor in the Public Health Sciences and Physician Assistant departments.
“I hope you will take time to join me as we look fondly on the previous 50 years and all that has been achieved, and, as we look forward to the next 50 years with excitement for all that is to be taught, all that is to be discovered, and all that is to be accomplished,” said Muma.
The 50th anniversary celebration is being held Nov. 2-7 and coincides with the annual CHP Week celebration.
Respondus LockDown browser now available for Chromebook
Respondus LockDown browser is now available to students using Chromebook as a beta test for Wichita State and a few other universities. If you are a student who needs Respondus LockDown Browser for a Chromebook, please follow these instructions:
- Log into the Chromebook and start Google Chrome
- Go to the download link for LockDown Browser: You will automatically be redirected to the Chrome Web Store.
- From the Chrome Web Store, select “Add to Chrome” to install the LockDown Browser Extension
- Log in to Blackboard Learn and navigate to the exam that requires LockDown Browser
- The LockDown Browser extension will be started automatically when an assessment requires it
Note: during the beta, this extension will only work with assessments an instructor has enabled for use with LockDown Browser for Chromebook. If your instructor has asked you to use it, but it won't work for you, check with them to make sure they have authorized Chromebook use for the quiz you need to work on.
Convergence Sciences team helps communities predict, prepare for disasters
A team of interdisciplinary researchers at Wichita State University is using artificial intelligence and big data to digitally transform the way communities predict and respond to natural disasters.
The newly formed Data-Enabled Disaster Resilience Center is part of Wichita State’s Convergence Sciences Initiative, which empowers faculty, staff and students who span the disciplines to form research clusters that address our most pressing and opportunistic challenges. Each of the four projects selected was awarded $300,000 over the next three years.

Students and faculty - get up to $20,000 from the John A. See Innovation Award
The John A. See Innovation Award is to be applied directly to advancing the technology. Ideally, this will support additional investment by others. Examples of supported costs are prototype development, product testing, and marketing analysis. The award cannot be used for faculty salaries but may be used to pay for external consulting fees. Awards typically range from $1,000 to $20,000.

First-generation student seized grad school opportunity
When Lily Guillen started her college education, she started from square one.
One story she likes to tell is that when she started her first semester at Monmouth College in Illinois, a friend asked her if she’d gotten her textbooks. She said she hadn’t received them yet. It was then that her friend told her that she had to purchase the books.
“I didn't know I had to buy books,” she said.
Lily, a graduate student in studio art, is one of thousands of first-generation students at Wichita State University. She will be taking over the university’s Instagram account on Wednesday, Nov. 4, to share her experiences as a first-gen student.
First-generation student overcomes hurdles to succeed
Jessica Gulaskey likes a challenge.
“I believe that pushing myself academically is going to make me feel more fulfilled in life,” said Jessica, a senior in biology at Wichita State University.

Psychology researchers want to learn how your child is coping with COVID-19
Researchers at Wichita State University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley are doing an online research study to see what 10-17 year-old children think about COVID-19, and what they think about their parents’ beliefs and behaviors during this time.
When children complete the survey, their family will be entered into a raffle for a $10 gift card. We hope about 250 children complete our survey, and we will raffle 50 of the gift cards. If you have a child living in your home who is 10-17 years old, your child might be eligible for this study.

Are you a parent of a teenager? If so, this may be a great opportunity for your child to experience what it is like being a part of an online research study.
The INSPYRE Research lab at Wichita State University is conducting a study to explore what makes relationships healthy or unhealthy in teens. The survey will only take about 20 minutes to complete, and a small prize will be given for participation.
Teens must be between the ages of 13-19 and be fluent in English. For easy access, teens can complete this study online, but they need their parent’s permission first.

Industrial, Systems, and Manufacturing Engineering invites you to an IME Colloquium presentation by Dr. Ruben Favela, senior manager, advanced design and industrial engineering at Textron Aviation. The title of the presentation will be “Digital Factory and Intelligent Scheduling in Aerospace Industry,” and will be held from 11 a.m.-noon Friday, Nov. 6, via Zoom.
Abstract
Breakthrough to evolve production systems through Industry 4.0 principles and lean engineering to dramatically increase delivery and quality. Automated digitally linked business in real time to monitor quality and delivery to connect every work-station to ultimately make decisions without human touch in a 100% labor intensive environment in aerospace industry. Material availability and on-time delivery improved in 50%, scrap reduced in 25% and $1.9M of annual recurrent savings.
Dr. Ruben Favela is the Sr. Manger of Advanced Design and Industrial Engineering in Textron Aviation. Textron Aviation produces and sells Cessna and Beechcraft aircrafts in Wichita. He has worked for Textron Aviation for eight years, leading innovations, engineering changes, introduction of new products and increasing business capabilities and capacities.
He earned his Ph.D. in Innovation Design in 2017, Masters in Product Design in 2011 and bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering in 2007. He began his career at Honeywell Aerospace in 2007 and Automotive Industry in 2011.
He is certified by APICS CPIM, Blackbelt By Honeywell and ASQ, GD&T, Master Lean manufacturing by Delphi Powertrain, TRIZ “Theory of Inventive Problem Solving” by Oxford Creativity University, Excellence model by Shingo Enterprise and Advanced Problem Solving by Shaining RedX. Ruben has accomplished four times the finalist for Chairman award in Textron Aviation, Best Six sigma project, Best Manufacturing Plant of North America by Industry Week magazine [hold full responsibility] and best project for PhD implementing in 2015 “Virtual Reality introduction in aerospace business.”
Some specific applications Ruben has worked in Automotive Industry as problem solver for process and design though reliability and accelerated life testing based on Ford, GM, Chrysler, Hyundai, Harley Davidson, Mazda, Aston Martin, Mercedes-Benz and BMW standards. He is specialized on the design and deployment of Lean Operations, Business Analytics and Work systems.

Now's your chance to celebrate the 2020-21 season, by bringing your face into Charles Koch Arena in a "big" way. We're filling Charles Koch Arena with two-and-a-half-foot high fan faces sponsored by Patterson Legal Group.
Fans can purchase a two-and-a-half-foot high (32 in. x 16 in.) likeness of their face to be featured in the lower-level at Charles Koch Arena for all home games for men's and women's basketball and volleyball for the 2020-21 season. All 20 Ulrich billboards now up around Wichita
Every month since July, the Ulrich Museum of Art has been sharing some of the most compelling artworks from its permanent collection with the public on billboards located throughout Wichita. Now, with the start of November, the final two billboards are up, making it possible for people to view all 20 Ulrich + Artists + You Community Billboards in their collective glory.
Ulrich Director Leslie Brothers, who created the concept for the unique public art project, said it was a way to overcome the challenges imposed by the coronavirus, which, for the time being, requires the museum building to stay closed to public gatherings and open to gallery viewers by appointment only.

“We started this project with the intention of letting people know that they matter and that this art experience is for everyone,” Brothers said. “Now that you can see all twenty billboards on display across town, it feels great to know we have shared some amazing art with people during these otherwise difficult times.”
The two latest billboards, featuring the art of Robert Indiana and Louise Nevelson, are located at 5500 W. Central and 4950 S. Broadway respectively in Wichita. You can find a map of all twenty billboards on the Ulrich website. The billboards feature works from the Museum’s collection in one of three categories: Wichita or Kansas artists (examples include photographer Larry Schwarm and painter Patrick Duegaw); living and deceased artists with strong Wichita or Kansas ties (photographers Gordon Parks and Terry Evans); and works by a culturally- and racially-diverse array of both American and international artists (Chinese artist Zhang Huan and Indigenous Artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith). Along with displaying the billboards, the exhibition also includes virtual programming with artists featured in the project, and curricular content for K-12 and college students. The next Ulrich Virtual program takes place at 6 p.m. CST on Tuesday, November 17, when photographer and historian John Edwin Mason discusses the friendship between photographer Gordon Parks and boxer Muhammad Ali. The Gordon Parks billboard featuring two photos of Ali is currently on display at 5218 E. 21stStreet. Ulrich Virtual programming is free and open to all, but you must register first in order to get the Zoom link: ulrich.wichita.edu/programs.

The Edwin A. Ulrich Museum of Art is the university art museum of Wichita State University. Our Toys for Tots toy drive is happening now until Dec. 16! We had fantastic support last year ending with a box brimming over with toys. We helped so many underprivileged children in Wichita. Let's shoot to double it this year!

What would autumn be without an old-fashioned bake sale? That's why Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Kappa Delta Chi Sorority Inc., are excited to announce our first joint philanthropy event! Fill out an order form by Sunday, Nov. 8, and stop by the SAE House on Nov. 15 to benefit the Children's Miracle Network and the American Cancer Society. We also deliver.
We are offering a selection of assorted cake pops, snickerdoodles, puppy chow, and Rice Krispy treats. We also have gift boxes available.
