Celebrate Black History Month at Wichita State
Every February, people in the United States celebrate the achievements and history of African Americans as part of Black History Month.
The celebration's history begins with Carter G. Woodson, an American historian, author and journalist. In September 1915, Woodson founded what is known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), an organization dedicated to researching, promoting and preserving the lives, history and culture of Black/African Americans.
In 1926, ASALH sponsored a national Negro History Week, an event that grew from local communities to college campuses. By 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month designated in February. He invited Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history."
At Wichita State University, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion will be partnering with several organizations to host virtual and distanced events in honor Black History Month. Most events will be free, unless otherwise indicated.

WSU Barton School of Business Beta Alpha Psi students give back
Beta Alpha Psi members of WSU’s Barton School of Business teamed up with Chick-fil-A to feed those on the frontlines.
“We’re really thankful for the health care industry here in Wichita in the medical providers,” said WSU Graduate Student Nathan Hayden. “I hope that they can enjoy a good hot lunch and I know sometimes it’s hard to find time to grab lunch or get a bathroom break so I do hope that this can be used to just give them a little bit of happiness and joy today.”

Complete a survey and earn a chance at a $25 gift card
The Kansas Board of Regents wants your help with accessing internet quality and access across the state. Please consider completing a short survey and have a chance to receive a $25 gift card.
The Institute for Policy & Social Research (IPSR) at the University of Kansas is conducting a study on broadband access and affordability in Kansas. The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of internet access for schools, households, health care, and the economy. Researchers at the University of Kansas are conducting a survey and speed test to gather data about the availability and quality of internet service in Kansas, including to identify locations that lack internet or broadband service.
The information provided by survey participants will help researchers identify geographic regions as well as populations that lack reliable and affordable internet access and create policy recommendations that will benefit these regions and populations by improving internet access and affordability.
If you are currently residing or located within the state of Kansas, we ask that you review the information statement at https://ipsr.ku.edu/broadband/regents.shtml and then complete the speed test and survey. This survey takes about 15 minutes to complete. The content of the survey should cause no more discomfort than you would experience in your everyday life and your participation is strictly voluntary. All responses are anonymous and confidential and will only be viewed by the research team. It is possible however with internet communications that through intent or accident someone other than the intended recipient may see your responses.
Participants will have the option to enter their email address to win one of 200 $25 gift cards to amazon.com. You will only be able to enter once and your email address will not be associated with any survey responses.
Thank you for your participation! We believe that the information obtained from this study will help us gain a better understanding of internet availability that will benefit Kansas communities. We hope that your responses will aid us in our efforts to provide better internet access for all Kansans.
