WSU Weekly Briefing to feature initiatives to help students feel welcome
Programs and initiatives to make students feel welcome will highlight the WSU Weekly Briefing set for 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, in the Marcus Welcome Center.
Alicia Newell, assistant vice president, Assessment and Student Retention, Student Affairs, will discuss initiatives for the start of the fall semester on Monday, Aug. 20. Tracee Friess, director of communication for research and technology transfer, will give the overall university update.
The briefing will be live streamed and available later that day at Weekly Briefing. There will be time for questions at the end of the briefing.
Forward, Together
WSU faculty and staff are invited to gather at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, in the Shirley Beggs Ballroom, to hear nine influential Shockers speak about where we are—and where we're headed—as we move Forward, Together. Reception to follow with custom pint cup and drink voucher for all attendees (for those 21 or older).
Be aware of temporary traffic pattern by Shocker Hall for Move-In Days
On Thursday, Aug. 16, and Friday, Aug. 17, the road near Shocker Hall will be temporarily made one way to facilitate move-in for Shocker Hall residents. There will be a staging area near Charles Koch Arena. Be cautious in these areas for increased pedestrian traffic, let's have a safe move-in Shockers!
Regular shuttle bus service to resume Monday, Aug. 20
Shuttle bus service will resume regular Monday-Friday service on Monday, Aug. 20. The WSU Shuttle System is a free service for students, faculty, staff and visitors—giving you an alternative to parking on WSU's Main Campus. There are three shuttle routes available: The Metroplex Route, the Campus Route and the Innovation Campus Route.
'Dealing with Government Contracting Officials – What can you really say and do?'
Interactions with federal Contracting Officers are part and parcel of government contracting, but many traps exist for the unwary. The presentation -- “Dealing with Government Contracting Officials: What can you really say and do?” -- covers the do's and don'ts of dealing with Contracting Officers, including proposal discussions / negotiations, change orders and directives, ethical rules and restrictions, and much more. Packed with real-life examples and practical tips, this seminar will leave government contractors better educated -- and more confident -- in their dealings with the government.
The presentation will be held from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, in WSU Old Town, 238 N. Mead. Admission is free with fees paid by Wichita State University. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Pre-registration is required at https://bit.ly/2v7G7xv.
The presenter will be Steven Koprince, government contracts and small business law attorney. His practice focuses on helping small businesses navigate the federal marketplace, and he is a regular speaker and author on the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), the SBA affiliation rules, and other legal matters important to small government contractors. Koprince has spoken at industry and professional events across the country, and has been quoted by the Washington Post, NBC News and other news outlets.

Shockers picked first in preseason American poll
The Wichita State volleyball team is picked first in the 2018 American Athletic Conference
Preseason Coaches Poll. The Shockers received six first-place votes and 113 points
in the poll.
Last year, the Shockers went 20-0 in their inaugural season in The American.
The Shockers return nine letterwinners and three starters from a team that went 29-4
overall and 20-0 in American Athletic Conference play in 2017. Last season, the Shockers
earned the No. 16 overall seed and hosted the first and second rounds of the NCAA
Tournament for the first time in school history.
Cincinnati and Temple were picked to finish second and third in the poll.

The web support site has handled 267 support tickets to date with an average time to completion at 3.6 hours.
Remember that there are come-and-go triage open lab session on the schedule for 9-11 a.m. Thursday in Jabara Hall Room 122. There will be no Friday triage open lab because of the president's address. CMS trainings and open labs are on the schedule through the end of September.
