Office Hours = Student Hours
Students often don't ask for help when they need it because they don't understand how, or know where to go. One way to help them feel more empowered to ask for help is to reconsider the term “Office Hours.” As faculty and staff, we understand those hours are when faculty members and instructors set time aside in their office to help students. But to students, many of whom are first-generation, it may be interpreted as hours that instructors are in their offices working and should not be bothered. You can help students feel more confident in asking for help in classes by explaining that “office” hours really mean “student” hours.

We currently rate at 82 percent for site health, up from the low 70s at launch.* While we continue to work on improving that score, there are a few barriers that have caused us to plateau in the areas of Accessibility and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Accessibility One of the main reasons we chose our new content management system (CMS) is the ability to check the accessibility of our sites to identify and correct problems. While the old site met the state of Kansas' accessibility requirements, we're aiming much higher as part of WSU's agreement with the National Federation for the Blind with a goal of meeting the Web Content Accessibility Guidlines AA standard. One barrier to improving our accessibility score is the preservation of legacy Department Tools forms. The migration of DT forms was necessary for continuities' sake, but from an accessibility standpoint, they're dated and poorly designed. We have replaced all the major prospective-student-facing forms with clean versions native to the new CMS, but there are still many out there that we'll be working with users to replace as we move forward. Another problem is the WSU Policies and Procedures manual, which was, to put it mildly, a relic. The manual used a mix of pdf and html and contains multiple accessibility and structuring errors. That feature was moved into the new CMS, but a new version is being created, so we are expecting to get a boost when the new version goes live. Search Engine Optimization The major barrier to improving our SEO score is page descriptions. There are currently 13,128 pages that don't have a page description, which is impacting our SEO score. That's not surprising given that Department Tools didn't allow individual pages to have unique page descriptions, but we'll be working to shrink that number in coming months. * NOTE: After several weeks, the Insights report was adjusted to exclude system files and example pages. Because those files were native to the CMS and included a high number of pages that were perfect from an accessibility standpoint, our site score took a significant backward step when the files were excluded. Thus the early scores were artificially high, diminishing how far we've actually come.
