Engineering dean candidates to visit campus
Four candidates for dean of the College of Engineering will be on campus during the next four weeks. Names will be released closer to each visit.
The schedule is as follows:
Candidate No. 1 – Monday, Sept. 10, and Tuesday, Sept. 11
Candidate No. 2 – Thursday, Sept. 13, and Friday, Sept. 14
Candidate No. 3 – Tuesday, Sept. 25, and Wednesday, Sept. 26
Candidate No. 4 – Monday, Oct. 1, and Tuesday, Oct. 2
There will be a public forum at 3:30 p.m. in 107 Devlin Hall for each of the candidates on Sept. 10, Sept. 13, Sept. 25, and Oct. 1.
WSU Police to offer self-defense training
The Wichita State University Police are offering a new training to the WSU community. This self-defense training is used as a vehicle to empower anyone who takes it.
By bringing together the elements of education, dependency on self, responsibilities in decision making and realization of physical power, R.A.D instructors not only convey practical technique, but also change lives. R.A.D. teaches defense against abduction, learning risk awareness, reduction, recognition and avoidance. We strive to have a positive learning environment that is enjoyable for all who attend.

Professional Edge Program helps students build networks
The Professional Edge Program, open to all undergraduate business majors, is a free four-semester non-credit program. Its focus is to provide students advanced and specific skills such as leading and contributing to meetings, negotiating compensation packages, work-style identification, choosing a mentor, and strategic social networking.

WSU CARE Team provides support to student injured in skateboarding accident
A WSU student was seriously injured in a skateboarding accident in the RSC parking garage on Monday, Sept. 3. University Police responded and the student was transported to Wesley Hospital. In the interest of privacy, the name and condition of the student aren't being shared at this time.
The CARE Team, comprised of staff from across campus, quickly got involved to provide support. A member of the team was with the student at the hospital until family arrived at 4 a.m. yesterday, (Tuesday, Sept. 4).
In addition to providing a safety net for students in terms of emotional or physical support, the CARE Team lets students know there are people concerned about them and works to connect them to the appropriate campus resources.
In times of crisis, the CARE Team makes sure the students, family and friends receive the support they need. The CARE Team also informs faculty why a particular student may be missing class.
The CARE Team meets regularly on Wednesdays to discuss new cases or follow-up on previous cases to make sure that no one is overlooked.

Parking lot advisory
As of 7 p.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 5), the parking lot immediately west of Koch Arena (Lot 2W) will be closed for an event occurring on Thursday, Sept. 6. There will be an expected 1,500 guests on campus, and buses and vehicles will be parked in that lot throughout the day. Please make sure that all vehicles have been moved out of Lot 2W by no later than 7 p.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 5). Vehicles left in that lot may be subject to parking citations, costing up to $150.
Chemistry Colloquium set for today (Wednesday, Sept. 5)
Minae Mure, Department of Chemistry, University of Kansas, will present a Chemistry Colloquium at 3:30 p.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 5) in 224 McKinley Hall. Mure's topic is “Post-translational modifications of lysyl oxidase-like 2.”
Invitation to Financial Aid Workshop on Thursday, Sept. 27

The outreach training team for the Kansas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (KASFAA) has the answer for you! The 2018 Annual Financial Aid Workshop for High School Guidance Counselors, TRIO / Gear Up partners, Admissions and other higher ed professionals are coming to Wichita State on Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Hughes Metropolitan Complex. The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m.-noon, and will cover completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), students' dependency status questions, scholarships and more.
Emergency Building Coordinator (EBC) training session announced
Mike Strickland, director of WSU Environmental, Health and Safety, and Cody Charvat, Director of Sedgwick County Emergency Management, will conduct training sessions for Chief Emergency Building Coordinators (CEBC) and Emergency Building Coordinators (EBC) from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, in 257 RSC.
The training session is for new Chief Emergency Building Coordinators (CEBC) or any current CEBC wishing to attend a refresher session.

WSU Weekly Briefing to feature Will Parcell talking about applied learning
Will Parcell, chair and associate professor of geology at Wichita State, will discuss the importance of applied learning in this week's WSU Weekly Briefing at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, in the Marcus Welcome Center.
Kevin Harrison, community engagement coordinator, Diversity and Community Engagement, will give the overall university update.
The briefing will be livestreamed and available later that day at Weekly Briefing. There will be time for questions at the end of the briefing.
Hoops 4 Literacy event in Charles Koch Arena tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 6)
StoryTime Village invites you to kick off National Literacy Month at Hoops 4 Literacy from 10 a.m.-noon tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 6) in Charles Koch Arena.
The event includes a Shocker fan experience, including Shocker Athletics, Shocker Dance & Cheer, and WuShock.
All third-grade students at USD 259 Title I schools have been invited to participate in this event featuring teams from the Wichita Police Department and Sedgwick Co. Sheriff's Department, along with special celebrity friends. The celebrity guests include local community leaders, former Harlem Globetrotters and former WSU and NBA basketball players Lynbert “Cheese” Johnson and Aubrey Sherrod as coaches.
The event is free and all third-grade students will receive a new book.

‘How Do I Get Started with Endnote?' workshop on Sept. 14
University Libraries is holding the workshop, “How Do I Get Started with Endnote?” from noon-1:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, in 217 Ablah Library. Learn to use Endnote to upload citation data from library databases, create new citations in various citation styles, organize citations and insert citations into a MS Word document in this very helpful workshop.
This is one in a series of Savvy Researcher workshops this semester. The workshops in this series are open to WSU students, faculty and staff.

Research opportunity for first year undergraduates
The Cohen Honors College in partnership with the Department of Chemistry are excited to announce the launch of the First Year Research Experience (FYRE) pilot program. The mission of this first FYRE program is to introduce research to first-year undergraduates in a practical and accessible way.
We will have an informational session at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in the Shocker Hall Multipurpose Room. Students interested in applying to the FYRE in program should go to FYRE in STEM Student Application.
