Starting this academic year, we've decided to take a new approach to the faculty-staff newsletter, advancing the spirit of the faculty-staff kickoff event held on Aug. 17. The new newsletter – Forward, Together – is about people and programs making a difference in the lives of our students and community.
College of Engineering candidate to visit campus today (Monday, Sept. 10) and Tuesday, Sept. 11
Dennis Livesay, dean of the Graduate School, associate vice president for Research and Technology and professor at Wichita State University, will visit Wichita State as a dean candidate for the College of Engineering today (Monday, Sept. 10) and Tuesday, Sept. 11.
Faculty, staff and students are invited to a public forum at 3:30 p.m. today (Monday, Sept. 10 in 107 Devlin Hall. Information is also available on the Academic Affairs website.
Attention WSU researchers – potential funding opportunity
Note: This is a limited submission opportunity (i.e. only one application from WSU will be accepted). If interested in applying, please notify proposals@wichita.edu of your intent to submit a Letter of Intent no later than 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19. If more than one PI expresses interest, an internal competition will help to determine which PI will ultimately be selected to propose.

Due Date: Internal NOIs Oct. 19, 2018; Letter Intent Nov. 26, 2018; Full Proposal Jan. 25, 2019
The Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) is designed to fulfill the mandate of the National Science Foundation (NSF) to promote scientific progress nationwide. A jurisdiction is eligible to participate in EPSCoR programs if its level of NSF research support is equal to or less than 0.75 percent of the total NSF research and related activities budget for the most recent three-year period. Through this program, NSF establishes partnerships with government, higher education and industry that are designed to effect sustainable improvements in a jurisdiction's research infrastructure, Research and Development (R&D) capacity, and hence, its R&D competitiveness.
RII Track-2 FEC builds interjurisdictional collaborative teams of EPSCoR investigators in scientific focus areas consistent with NSF priorities. Projects are investigator-driven and must include researchers from at least two RII- eligible jurisdictions with complementary expertise and resources necessary to tackle those projects, which neither party could address as well or rapidly alone.
The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) research and education activities should seek to broaden participation through the strategic inclusion and integration of different types of individuals, institutions, and sectors throughout the project. Proposals must describe a comprehensive and integrated vision to drive discovery and build sustainable STEM capacity that exemplifies diversity of all types (individual, institutional, geographic, and disciplinary).
The development of diverse early-career faculty is a critical component of this sustainable STEM capacity. For FY 2019, RII Track-2 FEC proposals are invited on a single topic: "Harnessing the Data Revolution to solve problems of national importance.”

Psychology Department to offer parenting group sessions this fall
The WSU Department of Psychology is offering a six-week parenting group in its Psychology Clinic this semester. The group targets parents of children 2-10 years old and covers techniques on how to manage behavioral problems at school and home.
Interested parents need to complete an intake session with assistant professor Samantha Gregus to determine appropriateness for group. This would be a 1-1.5 hour session, and parents need to contact Grugus directly at 316-978-3759 to schedule an intake. The intake cost is $10.
Group sessions will run from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays in the Psychology Clinic, fourth floor of Jabara Hall. The cost of participating in the six group sessions is $50. The first session is scheduled on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
The next phase of Graduate Enrollment Management
All graduate faculty are encouraged to come learn more about GEM (Graduate Enrollment Management). Topics covered will include efforts to increase the number of applicants, improve yield and how the GEM process can be used to catalyze continuous program improvement.
The discussion will be led by Dean Dennis Livesay and Assistant Dean Aaron Coffey. For your convenience, there are two sessions that cover the same material.

Involvement in out-of-class opportunities can be the difference between better and best
How do students stand out among the other job applicants who have a great GPA? By taking advantage of connection and involvement opportunities outside of the classroom and strengthening leadership skills. From completing the Leadership Certificate program to becoming an elected leader in a group to landing a summer internship, students should take advantage of opportunities outside of class. Wanted: Help evaluating high school seniors in scholarship competition
The Office of Admissions asks you to consider evaluating high school seniors during the state's largest annual high school scholarship competition. WSU's Distinguished Scholarship Invitational (DSI) on Saturday, Nov. 17, will bring students and families to campus from all over the country to compete for three $64,000 Gore Scholarships. Last year, more than 600 high school seniors, with an average 3.88 GPA and 28 ACT score, participated and more than 60 percent became Shockers this fall. Study Abroad Fair coming Sept. 11

Office of Financial Aid to host several FAFSA events
The 2019-20 FAFSA becomes available on Monday, Oct. 1. WSU's priority date for consideration for certain types of aid is Saturday, Dec. 1. That means you only have two months to complete your FAFSA online and submit any additional documentation to our office.
Make sure to finish your FAFSA early to maximize your awards.
