FirePoint students collaborate on behalf of Army research
Mix engineering and computer science students in a room with shared spaces and open offices and cool kinds of collaboration, discussion and innovation can happen, which is exactly what FirePoint Innovations Center executive director Peter Perna wants.
Most days, a visitor to the FirePoint will find as many as six Wichita State students working with Perna to help serve as a “super-connecter” between the Army and universities, small businesses, industry and other government organizations. FirePoint is Wichita State's partnership with the Army's Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering (AMRDEC).
Understanding Finance at WSU, rescheduled to Oct. 30
Understanding finance at WSU can be a challenge for budget officers and support staff. On Tuesday Oct. 30, Lois Tatro will present WSU Finance 101. The agenda includes information on GU and RU funding, how to stay on top of departmental finances, processing revenue, expenses, Visa procurement cards and more.

Grad School competition announcement
Have you heard? The Graduate School has a new research competition this fall called the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®). Any graduate student enrolled in masters, PhD or doctoral programs may compete. A student's program of study must contain an original research project. The degree program need not formally require a thesis or dissertation; however, the presentation topic must cover an original research project.

Literacy Camp combines fun and reading at Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic
Students and faculty at the Wichita State Speech-Language-Hearing clinic have seen firsthand the difference their programs make in the community. When Karissa Marble-Flint and Colleen Novak, faculty members in the Communication Sciences and Disorders department, recognized a need for reading assistance with Wichita children, they decided to create the first Summer Literacy Camp at the clinic.
Marble-Flint and Novak developed the camp for children who had completed kindergarten, first and second grades with language-literacy difficulties or disorders. The six-week-long program used storytelling, activities and hands-on materials to strengthen the children's literacy skills. Speech-Language Pathology graduate students and faculty facilitated a variety of activities designed to improve reading and language comprehension.
Student success hinges on strong study skills
The earlier students establish strong study habits and learning skills, the better they will perform as they persist to graduation. It's never too late to try new tactics to improve learning. Encourage students to quiz themselves or other classmates on class concepts, create questions from assigned readings to ask during class, or form a study group with other motivated students to improve academic performance. WSU choral faculty and piano faculty to collaborate in recital
WSU Director of Choral Activities Michael Hanawalt and WSU Piano Pedagogy Professor Justine Sasanfar will present a piano / vocal recital "In My Life," a collection of pieces exploring life's different stages, at 7:30 p.m. today (Tuesday, Sept. 18) in Wiedemann Hall.

Flu season is around the corner. Are you ready?
WSU HR Total Rewards team is once again hosting on-site flu shots, available to State of Kansas employees who are currently enrolled in medical insurance Plans A, J, Q, C, or N, as well as their covered spouse.
If registration is closed for the clinic on Thursday, Oct. 11, or no appointments are available in the online scheduler, a limited number of walk-in appointments will be accepted that day. Please note that walk-in appointments may experience longer wait times.

Constitution Day returns to WSU on Thursday, Sept. 20
The Kansas Court of Appeals will return to campus on Thursday, Sept. 20, in recognition of Constitution Day. A three-judge panel of the state appellate court will hear oral arguments in appeals for five cases from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 20, in the CAC Theater. Cases will be heard consecutively beginning at 9 a.m. After a recess for lunch, the court will reconvene at 1:30 p.m.
In 2014, West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd made an amendment to the Omnibus Spending Bill requiring all government-funded schools and federal agencies to provide educational programming on the United States Constitution.

SAC presents Samuel J. Comroe
SAC presents Samuel J. Comroe – I got 99 problems but a twitch aint one -- at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in the CAC Theater. Free to WSU students with Shocker ID, $3 faculty / staff, $5 general admission and $1 for kids 12 and under.
Comroe is a stand-up comedian who hilariously shares his story about what it's like to grow up with Tourette's syndrome and be labeled disabled. He has appeared on the 2018 season of America's Got Talent, where even Simon Cowell gave him a standing ovation.
Psychology Department to offer parenting group sessions this fall
The WSU Department of Psychology is offering a six-week parenting group in its Psychology Clinic this semester. The group targets parents of children 2-10 years old and covers techniques on how to manage behavioral problems at school and home.
Interested parents need to complete an intake session with assistant professor Samantha Gregus to determine appropriateness for group. This would be a 1-1.5 hour session, and parents need to contact Grugus directly at 316-978-3759 to schedule an intake. The intake cost is $10.
Group sessions will run from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays in the Psychology Clinic, fourth floor of Jabara Hall. The cost of participating in the six group sessions is $50. The first session is scheduled on Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Student Involvement is excited to announce a new sorority on campus. The Chi chapter of Lambda Pi Upsilon Sorority, Latinas Poderosas Unidas Inc. will have its founding line presentation at 8:06 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, on the RSC east patio.

You don't have to be an art major to paint a masterpiece! Join Student Activities Council for a step by step, stress-free Shocker themed painting class from 7-8:30 p.m. and 9-10:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in 142 RSC!
Participants will be provided a design, class instructor and all materials. There are two separate class times, so please make sure you and your friends coordinate responsibly as class seats are limited. We will not be able to switch reservations.

Spirit Squad connects with Kroger Rewards Program
