Ty Tabing is a native Wichitan and a 1989 Wichita State graduate who admits he rarely lingered on campus after classes.
Now it is his job to inspire people to linger, meet, talk and create in public spaces on Wichita State's campus. He starts at Braeburn Square, the retail area on Wichita State's Innovation Campus, as a “place-maker.”

Open Lab Training for CourseLeaf CAT today (Thursday, Sept. 27)
Open Lab, CourseLeaf CAT training for those involved in editing / approving the general information sections of the upcoming catalog will take place from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 27) in 122 Jabara Hall.
This come-and-go training is a hands-on opportunity to have questions answered. A short introduction to the software will take place during the first 30 minutes of each session. Registration is not necessary, but can be found at myWSU by clicking on the link to myTraining.

Chuck Bunting, associate dean of research, College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology at Oklahoma State University, will visit Wichita State as a dean candidate for the College of Engineering Monday, Oct. 1 and Tuesday, Oct. 2.
Faculty, staff and students are invited to a public forum at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, in 107 Devlin Hall. Information is also available on the Academic Affairs website at engineering finalists.

Hiring process for non-benefit eligible employees (students, grads, lecturers, temps)
A new process for hiring paperwork was implemented in Summer 2018 for all non-benefit eligible employees. With this change, hiring departments are no longer responsible for facilitating the completion of the new hire paperwork packets. That part of the process is now centralized within Human Resources, and HR is responsible for delivering the paperwork packet to the new hire in an electronic format. Hiring departments are responsible for completing the Non-Benefit Eligible Hire Form, submitting the ePAF, coordinating the completion of the Spoken English Forms (lecturers and teaching grads), and requesting the WSU email for the new employee.
Several improvements to the process have been made, including changes to the hiring form, and enhanced instructions for the Non-Benefit Eligible Hiring Process which are available on the Human Resources> Formswebpage in the Student, Graduate Student, Lecturer, or Temporary Employee section. These changes create an improved experience for our candidates and creates a more efficient process for the campus community.
Open labs are scheduled from 9-11 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 27) in 122 Jabara Hall, and 3-5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in 119 Jabara Hall, to learn and ask questions about the process of hiring non-benefit eligible employees.

Housing and Residence Life wants the campus to be aware of two changes
First, the housing application for 2019-20 goes live on Monday, Oct. 1. First-year students will be able to apply to live in Shocker Hall or our newest building, The Suites, starting that day. Returning students will also be able to submit their application on that day as well. Starting next year, however, only first-year students will be able to live in Shocker Hall. Returning students will be able to choose from The Suites or The Flats.
Second, the Housing and Residence Life Office will move from The Flats to a new renovated space in Shocker Hall on Monday, Oct. 15. An open house will be hosted on Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 11 a.m-1 p.m. for staff and students to come see the new space.
Parking lot closure tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 28) south of RSC
Parking lot 7 south of the RSC will be blocked for an event from 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28.
Office of Financial Aid to host several FAFSA events
The 2019-20 FAFSA becomes available on Monday, Oct. 1. WSU's priority date for consideration for certain types of aid is Saturday, Dec. 1. That means you only have two months to complete your FAFSA online and submit any additional documentation to our office.
Make sure to finish your FAFSA early to maximize your awards.
To help you, the Office of Financial Aid will host several FAFSA events:
- Shocker Hall FAFSA Completion Celebration from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, in the Shocker Hall Multi-Purpose Room
- FAFSA Finish Line event for TRIO, GEAR UP and Community Partners on Saturday, Oct. 6

- FAFSA Fun with the Office of Diversity & Inclusion (ODI) from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, in the ODI Conference Room.

This week, only KDHE webinars will be available. In-person presentations begin next week. For a full schedule of Wichita State HR Open Enrollment events, go to Open Enrollment. While the webinars are available this week, members will not be able to make their online elections until Monday, Oct. 1.
All webinars require registration and download of the GoToWebinar launcher, instructions for which will be sent via email after registering. These are streaming presentations, and must be viewed live at the scheduled time for access. Registration for all upcoming dates can be found at Informational Webinars.

Physical Therapy students seek volunteers for low back pain study
Students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Wichita State and their research advisor Barbara Smith are looking for participants for a research study on the effects of a modified deadlift exercise program on low back pain and functional disability. Your participation in this study may help the field of physical therapy to more effectively treat low back pain.
If chosen to participate in our study, you will be required to come to WSU Old Town at 213 N. Mead, on Friday, Oct. 5, for an initial evaluation. You will be able to select a 15-minute time block that is convenient for your schedule.
At the initial evaluation, you will be asked to complete forms about your low back pain and function. You will also perform a muscle endurance test for your back extensor muscles. At this time you will be assigned to a group, which may include an eight-week modified deadlift exercise program. All materials and instructions will be provided. Both groups will be required to return to the WSU Old Town Campus on Friday, Nov. 2, for a four-week re-evaluation and Friday, Nov. 30, for eight re-evaluations, each lasting about 10-15 minutes.

ISME Colloquium presentation set for tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 28)
Tuan Tran, master's student of the Department of Industrial, Systems and Manufacturing Engineering, will present “Implementing Push / Pull to a Purely Push Production System,” from 1-2 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 28) in 214 Clinton Hall.
A problem faced at Great Plains Industries Inc., specifically in the “Meter Assembly” production line, is that the finished goods items are planned through a pull system, while everything before the finished goods process are still organized using a push or MRP driven system. This causes excessive inventory between processes, loss of productivity and potential quality errors.
Using the production control systems and lean tools, we will implement a hybrid Push / Pull system, in order to reduce Work in Progress inventory, increasing productivity and prevent potential quality defects.
