Excellence award nominations are being accepted by Office of Research and Technology Transfer

Excellence awards nomination deadline Dec. 7, 2018

Nominations for Excellence Awards in Research, Creativity and Community Research are now being accepted by the Office of Research and Technology Transfer (RTT).

All full-time faculty, including distinguished professors and endowed chairs, who have served at WSU for at least three years are eligible. Faculty who hold an administrative position above that of chair are not eligible.

Previous winners of the award are ineligible to be nominated for a period of five years following the award. Please see the RTT website for additional details and nomination forms. Nominations must be received by Friday, Dec. 7, to be considered.

‘Forward Together: Applying Collective Impact for Large-Scale Social Change'

Luella Sanders, an alumna of WSU and director community impact for United Way of the Plains in Wichita, will be the guest speaker at a Psychology Department Colloquium from 3:30-4:30 p.m. today (Tuesday, Nov. 6) in 142 Rhatigan Student Center. Her topic will be “Forward Together: Applying Collective Impact for Large-Scale Social Change.”

Sanders works with a broad range of community partners in two primary areas: education (school readiness and grade level reading proficiency) and income (homelessness and financial equity).

Doctoral students need participants for their research projects

Two WSU graduate students (Doctor of Audiology and Doctor of Philosophy) need participants for their research projects. They are studying an existing and a newly developed clinical technique for evaluating function of the middle ear.

Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 35, have normal hearing, have not had an ear infection in the past three months, nor had a cold or flu in the past two weeks.

Participants will receive a free comprehensive hearing evaluation and ear examination prior to testing. The testing will take about an hour. Trademark Tuesday event coming Tuesday, Nov. 13

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will hold a Trademark Tuesday event from 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in 204 Ablah Library.

The Rocky Mountain Regional U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), in collaboration with partners located across the Rocky Mountain region, hosts quarterly interactive sessions with experts from the USPTO's Trademark Assistance Center (TAC), which is based at USPTO headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia.

During these virtual programs, TAC experts will provide an overview of various aspects of the trademark registration process, and answer any questions that program participants may have.

Did you know that WSU is home to leading, internationally-recognized space exploration researchers hailing from a diverse array of academic departments, including aerospace engineering, physics, biological sciences, human performance studies and philosophy?  

The Wichita Space Initiative has been created to advance space exploration and space research at WSU. The WSI provides a platform for highlighting and promoting space research conducted by WSU faculty and students. It is also a resource for current and prospective students to learn more about space at WSU, and contains information about WSU courses on space, scholarship and internship opportunities, as well as space-themed student organizations.

Funding available for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity

Undergrad research and creative activity

 

 The Undergraduate Student Research and Creative Activity Grants Program is now accepting applications for grants of up to $1,000 for students pursing research or creative projects.

Students who are sophomores, juniors or seniors with a GPA of at least 2.5 and at least two semesters remaining at WSU (including the semester in which you apply), are full time and have a faculty research mentor are eligible. Preference is given to projects not otherwise funded and previous awardees are not eligible.

Wichita State tips off its 113th men's basketball season 7 p.m. today (Tuesday, Nov. 6) against Louisiana Tech at Charles Koch Arena.
 
Tickets are still available for Tuesday night at 316-978-FANS (3267) or goshockers.com/MBBTickets. WSU has sold out 22-straight home games (21 at CKA) and is one of just nine programs that sold out every date in 2017-18.

The Gregg Marshall Radio Show returned to the airwaves yesterday (Monday, Nov. 5). Join Coach Marshall LIVE from 6-7 p.m. every Monday at AJ's Sports Grill at The Alley, or listen to the show on KFH (98.7 FM / 1330 AM). The show is rebroadcast in a television format Mondays at 9 p.m. on YurView Kansas (Cox 2022).


Drum Major Award nominations open

The Drum Major Award recognizes a person who seeks greatness, but does so through service and love. This award is given annually at the Martin Luther King Unity Walk.

Nominations are encouraged starting today (Tuesday, Nov. 6) at Drum Major Award - Wichita.edu/MLK.

An excerpt from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Drum Major Instinct speech states, “If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice, say that I was a drum major for peace: I was a drum major for righteousness."

Holiday shred schedule announced

Underground Vaults & Storage Inc. is reaching out to all university departments regarding the upcoming holidays and the shred schedule, so you can let them know if you need to skip or reschedule any of the services in November, December or January.

Underground Vaults & Storage will run its normal routes on Wednesday, Nov. 21, and Wednesday, Nov. 28. If you have a scheduled service and need to cancel or reschedule because your office will be closed, please let them know before Friday, Nov. 16, so they can make the adjustment.  

Since the campus is closed from Dec. 21-Jan. 1, they will cancel the route scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 26. If you have a service that day and need to reschedule, please let us know, otherwise we will just plan to service your container(s) on your next scheduled date.

If your office will be closed until classes resume on Tuesday, Jan. 22 and you have a scheduled service in January, please let us know if we need to skip or reschedule the service. We will plan to service everyone as normal unless we hear back from you since the campus is open.

A business management class encourages you to support the Give Your Warmth coat drive to help people in need this winter. The students will have a Coats for Coupons from noon-1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12-Thursday, Nov. 15, on the first floor in the Rhatigan Student Center, to collect winter clothes from students, faculty and staff. Those who make a donation will receive a coupon from Emperor's Japanese Grill, limit one coupon per person.

WSU Homecoming Royalty nominations have been extended to Wednesday, Nov. 7. Applicants must be senior status, have not previously been a finalist for Homecoming Royalty, be a current undergraduate student, and be in good academic standing as of January 2019.
