College of Engineering hosts scholarship competition on Nov. 16

WISE competition 111618

The Wichita State College of Engineering will welcome a record 271 high school seniors from 17 states for the 2018 Wallace Invitational for Scholarships in Engineering (WISE) competition on Friday, Nov. 16.

The WISE event, which begins at 9 a.m. in the Rhatigan Student Center, involves a group design challenge, an essay competition and tours and informational sessions for students and their parents.

In addition to determining which 12 students who will each win the $28,500 Wallace Scholarship, the competition serves as the year's most significant recruitment event. This fall, 138 of 400 the College of Engineering's new incoming freshmen were WISE participants.

“We are excited to see the competition continue to draw such accomplished students from such a broad area,” said Jason Bosch, director of student engagement and scholarships for the College of Engineering. He noted that the 2017 competition attracted 205 competitors from 13 states.

Selection of Wallace Scholars is based on recipients' high school GPAs, ACT scores and performance at the WISE Competition. Winners are notified in January and publicly announced in February. To qualify for the competition, students must first be admitted to WSU and have either a 3.5 GPA, 27 ACT score, or being ranked in the top 10 percent of their class.

Selected students will become part of the Wallace Scholars, a community of engineering students, composed of more than 40 members from every class and major within the College of Engineering. Wallace Scholars are involved on the WSU campus and within the Wichita community to promote engineering, math and science, and community service.

The Wallace Scholarship is made possible through the Dwane and Velma Wallace Endowment, created in 1976, which supports scholarships for engineering students and provides funds for the College of Engineering. Since 1980, the endowment has benefited more than 350 engineering majors at WSU.

More than 200 two-hundred people attended, and 11 conference sponsors. Janell Stang, a Prevention Initiatives professional, worked alongside the Prevention Initiatives team to organize the conference and ensure that it was an enjoyable and enriching experience for all involved.

The conference began the evening of Sept. 19 with the first Kansas Prevention Awards Ceremony. It was a privilege to honor people doing great work in the field of prevention. The 2018 awardees are:

  • Kansas Prevention “Sally Zellers” Lifetime Achievement Award: Max Wilson
  • Kansas Partner in Prevention Award: Pam Stevens, Newton Area Chamber of Commerce
  • Kansas Prevention Community Leader Award: Des Martens, Mirror, Inc
  • Kansas Prevention Connected Community of the Year Award: Sumner County Community Drug Action Team
  • Kansas Prevention Education Award: Holly Bowyer, Central Kansas Partnership
  • Kansas Prevention Youth Leadership Award: Eli Redington, Mirror's STAND

On Sept. 20, attendees were inspired by nationally recognized keynote speaker Carlton Hall. His keynote presentation was "Changing the Conversation: The Role of Prevention, Treatment and Recovery Communities in a time of National Crisis."

The rest of the day was packed with many opportunities to learn from breakout sessions and connect with others across Kansas doing great prevention work in their communities. The breakout sessions offered information on topics like suicide prevention, poverty and addiction and tobacco prevention, including vaping, and Juul usage.

To view the slides from the breakout sessions, visit the Kansas Prevention Conference webpage. Be sure to also check out our Facebook page for pictures from the conference and look for the hashtag #PreventionRocks2018 to see attendee photos.

The next Kansas Prevention Conference is scheduled for September 2019. To stay up to date on all Kansas Prevention Collaborative information, sign up for our mailing list. For more information about Prevention Initiatives, contact Chad Childs at chad.childs@wichita.edu or 316-217-1375.
