WSU to hold GoBabyGo Fall Tuneup for area children

GoBabyGo fall 2018 tuneup

Wichita State University's GoBabyGo program is holding its second annual Tuneup Day from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, in WSU's Experiential Engineering Building, northwest of 17th Street and Innovation Boulevard.

Faith, although only 2 years old, will get her first set of wheels at the Fall Tuneup Day. Faith is curious and observant and loves to play with her siblings. However, Spina Bifida brings mobility challenges, making it difficult for her to keep up. WSU's GoBabyGo program has customized a car for Faith so she'll be able to join in family fun just in time for the holidays. Faith and her family will travel from Manhattan, Kansas, for her to receive her new wheels.

Eight additional children will also receive their first car at this event. In addition, any previous car recipients may bring their cars in for a tuneup or repairs, which will be done by WSU students. As the GoBabyGo drivers continue to grow, WSU will continue to support them by maintaining their cars.

WSU students across disciplines work together to customize and deliver cars to children several times per year at no cost to the children's families. Every car is customized to suit each child's specific needs. To date, GoBabyGo at Wichita State has modified and delivered nearly 50 cars to children across the Midwest.

Along with presenting the nine new cars and providing free tuneups, the children can test drive their cars at the Fall Tuneup on a pint-sized obstacle course. There will be additional activities for brothers and sisters.

Director of Military and Veteran Services provides update

Larry Burks

Larry Burks

Larry Burks, director of Military and Veteran Services, wrote a letter to the editor of "The Sunflower" this week. We're posting it here for your convenience.

Dear Editor,

I am writing to update veterans and the campus community about work underway to address the backlog in processing claims for veterans' benefits. This is a WSU problem, but it's also a national problem, with a Veterans Administration claims backlog running into the hundreds of thousands.

All of us who support campus veterans are sincerely sorry this has happened. Eight of us have worked the last two weekends to examine every single case file and get them into the best possible shape to clear this backlog on our end.

Here's where things stand as of Tuesday, Nov. 13, based on all applications received:

    • 64 certifications have been completed (this includes first-time certifications, adjustments and amendments.)
    • 36 need follow-ups from VA or students. (All documentation has been reviewed and additional answers are needed from students to process the paperwork. Emails have been sent to those students).
    • 55 completed applications were transmitted to VA for certification last weekend.

My own background includes 20 years active duty in the U.S. Army, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Throughout my military career, and since then, I have supported active and retired military families to ensure their needs were met along with those of the broader community. I plan to continue doing that in the role I took on last month at WSU.

Whether you're a veteran or not, I'd be pleased to have you stop by the Military and Veteran Center in Grace Wilkie Hall 105.

Larry Burks Sr.

Director, Military and Veteran Services

Holiday shred schedule announced

Underground Vaults & Storage Inc. is reaching out to all university departments regarding the upcoming holidays and the shred schedule, so you can let them know if you need to skip or reschedule any of the services in November, December or January.

Underground Vaults & Storage will run its normal routes on Wednesday, Nov. 21, and Wednesday, Nov. 28. If you have a scheduled service and need to cancel or reschedule because your office will be closed, please let them know before Friday, Nov. 16, so they can make the adjustment.

Since the campus is closed from Dec. 21-Jan. 1, they will cancel the route scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 26. If you have a service that day and need to reschedule, please let us know, otherwise we will just plan to service your container(s) on your next scheduled date.

Accessibility Training now available for students

Accessibility Training

All instructional and enrichment content in WSU classes needs to be accessible, and that includes content students present to other students. To address faculty concerns about delivering this necessary training, WSU is now offering accessibility training for students.

Currently training is available in accessible face-to-face presentation, accessible conference presentations, and the creation of digital documents. More training is coming soon.

If you have students who will give presentations in class and / or handing out (in person) or posting (online) documents for other students to read, please consider asking them to complete these trainings. They are fully online, take about 30 minutes each, and students can prove to you they took the training by showing you the digital credential they earn, or by printing off a certificate of completion.

These trainings do not expire, so students who complete them for classes this semester will still have viable digital credentials in later semesters. Trainings can be found at Accessibility Training and questions can be directed to Instructional Design and Access at IDA@wichita.edu.

RH: From Ragland to Early to McDuffie

RH: Over 30 story by Suellentrop

Scoring 30 or more points is a function of skill, but also playing time and score of the game.

Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall's tenure is light on 30-point scorers, in part because his teams share points and minutes. The 30-spot is rare because he uses blowouts to rest starters instead of padding stats.

It shouldn't be surprising, therefore, that most of the 30-point games in Marshall's 11-plus seasons matter. There are eight and in seven the scorer played 30 or more minutes – which rarely happens against overmatched opponents. Most of these eight performances helped push the season in the right direction against a significant opponent.
