Weekly Briefing update: Honors College fee approval
Earlier this month, the Cohen Honors College Student Council voted unanimously for a proposal to institute a $50-per-semester program fee for all Honors College students. The fee, pending the president's and KBOR approval, becomes effective beginning in fall 2019 and will, along with university funds, allow the college to better serve students through an expanded space, upgraded technology, and additional events and programming.
The Honors College has grown to serve more than 600 students. We're excited about these improvements and the positive impact they will have on our rapidly growing population of Shocker Honors students.
Face-to-face training on how OIEC processes reports of discrimination and harassment, coming Dec. 11
University Policies and Process address protected class discrimination and gender-based harassment, discrimination and sexual misconduct. It is important for the university's responsible employees to have a working knowledge of the policy and process, so if a student reports and asks, “What happens now?,” our employees are able to provide an answer.
Natasha Stephens and Christine Taylor will offer training from 3-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, on how the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance processes reports of discrimination and harassment.
This training is specifically targeted to our responsible employees, and will provide a greater understanding about the process and what happens when the OIEC receives a report, the difference between a report and an investigation, specific working examples of protected class discrimination, sexual harassment and quid pro quo harassment.

Banner 9 Scheduling Building Training – Dec. 4 and 5
New and experienced Banner Schedule Builders and Department Chairs are invited to attend the upcoming summer and fall 2019 Schedule Building Training sessions presented by the University Registrar's Office and Applications Training on Tuesday, Dec. 4, and Wednesday, Dec. 5. Both Sections 1 and 2 are required for new schedule builders.
Attendees will learn to enter the course schedule and view information using Banner 9, Self Service and Reporting Services. Registration is required, sessions are posted on myWSU > myTraining. Please contact Applications Training if you have questions at 978-5800 or training@wichita.edu.

Instructional Design and Access will offer a full day of hands-on assistance for instructors who want help setting up their spring classes in Blackboard on Friday, Dec. 7. Whether you teach online, hybrid, or face-to-face, if you use Blackboard to augment your classes, we can help you!

LGBTQ Faculty Staff Association is formed
The LGBTQ Task Force and Office of Diversity and Inclusion are excited to announce the formation of the LGBTQ Faculty Staff Association.

Faculty who are interested in serving as a Retention Faculty Fellow are encouraged to review the position description and submit the application materials. Retention Faculty Fellows will work with Student Success and Success Coaches to support the goals of the Strategic Enrollment Management Plan and identify and support students in their college who may be at risk of not persisting to graduation. Tuition Assistance deadline approaching
The Total Rewards team reminds staff and faculty that the deadline for spring 2019 Tuition Assistance applications is near. The deadline of Saturday, Dec. 1 is not a university business day, so applications will be accepted through midnight on Monday, Dec. 3.
Applications with incorrect or incomplete information, including missing signatures, will be returned to the applicant for completion, and will be considered submitted as of the date of submission of the fully completed form. Applications returned for completion will be denied if they are not submitted with all complete and accurate information prior to the deadline. Because of the volume of applications received each semester, late applications will be automatically denied. There will be no exceptions.

Grant Funding Opportunity from WSU's Regional Institute on Aging
The Regional Institute on Aging (RIA) at Wichita State University is pleased to announce a new competitive funding opportunity for interdisciplinary faculty research. Two $20,000 grants will be awarded for two interdisciplinary research projects at WSU that contribute to new knowledge and practice related to well-being in older adults.
This funding opportunity advances two goals of the university's strategic plan: Goal 1 - Guarantee an applied learning or research experience for every student by each academic program and Goal 4 - Accelerate the discovery, creation and transfer of new knowledge. Proposals must actively involve faculty members at WSU from at least two distinct disciplines and more than one college. The deadline for RIA proposals is Friday, Dec. 21. Students plant ‘Wulip Garden' in Braeburn Square
Despite the wintry weather, students planted new “flowers” on campus this week as part of the Wulip Garden placemaking initiative aimed at creating a unique and inviting environment for campus visitors.
The flowers, called Wulips, are yellow and black blooms made from chicken wire and bamboo. More than 50 students, alumni, faculty and staff collaborated on the project.
Parking lot update for tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 1)

Opportunities rarely present themselves, so when graduate student Emily Mullins first enrolled at Wichita State, she recognized the endless amount of options available.
WSU research makes news in the Philippines
A Philippine newspaper picked up the story of graduate assistant Alisha Prince doing research with David McDonald. Prince is the student who won our inaugural Three Minute Thesis Competition and is vice president of the Graduate Student Association.
Koskei named Runner of the Year in The American
Wichita State University student-athlete Winny Koskei has been named the Runner of the Year in the American Athletic Conference in a unanimous
vote by the league's head cross country coaches, the conference announced Tuesday
afternoon.
The distance phenom capped off the 2018 season with All-American honors finishing
35th at the NCAA Championships on Nov. 16 in Madison, Wis. The redshirt sophomore
became the third Shocker in the Kirk Hunter era to earn All-American status.
"I'm really excited for Winny," said head cross country coach Kirk Hunter "Her consistent performances at a high level led to this honor and others took notice.
I'm really proud of her accomplishments and I'm excited to see what the future holds."

SGA is hosting a Menstrual Products Drive
As a part of its commitment to improving student health across campus, SGA is hosting a drive for menstrual products to the Shocker Support Locker. The drive will take place every business day until 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4.
All donations are to be submitted to the SGA office in 219 RSC, or to the Shocker Support Locker in 103 Grace Wilke Hall. SGA recommends donations of panty liners, menstrual cups, sanitary wipes, sea sponges and tampons.
