The New Year is a good time to revisit the topic of dealing with phishing emails
To: All WSU Students & Employees:
The New Year is a good time to revisit the topic of dealing with phishing emails.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
Your myWSU ID and password in the hands of cyber vandals not only exposes access to your WSU email account for improper purposes, but it also permits cyberthieves access to personal information via other WSU systems (Banner, BlackBoard, etc.).
WSU works diligently to protect everyone’s information and we have systems and procedures in place designed to do precisely that. It’s obviously always much better to be vigilant and to not respond to these messages in the first place. Information security is a shared responsibility between the owners of the systems and the users of the systems. Users employing best practices to safeguard credentials is still our first and best line of defense.
WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT DO ABOUT PHISHING E-MAIL MESSAGES:
- NEVER provide personal information to sources that you do not recognize and/or that you cannot validate. Legitimate organizations and individuals will never ask for any sensitive, personal information (logon ID, password, social security number, birthdate, etc.) via e-mail. In particular WSU will never ask for your myWSU id or password via an e-mail message OR via a link in an e-mail message. If you receive an email that appears to be from the university, or from any individual who works for the university, requesting any personal information you should assume that it is a phishing attempt and not respond.
- NEVER share your myWSU credentials (logon ID and password) with anyone. Do not write your credentials on a sticky note or anything similar to remind yourself. Lock your computer session when leaving your workspace unattended. Be cognizant of your surroundings when you login to WSU systems regarding any persons who might be able to view your credentials as you enter them.
- NEVER utilize your myWSU credentials (logon ID and password) as your account name and password for another external system unrelated to WSU (such as Amazon, e-Bay, PayPal, or any other site or system).
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO ABOUT PHISHING E-MAIL MESSAGES:
- ALWAYS immediately change your password if you suspect that you have responded to a phishing e-mail message or accidentally (or intentionally) provided your WSU credentials to anyone. You can change your MyWSU password at ANY time. The default requirement is every 90 days, but don’t wait for that in the case that you even remotely suspect that your WSU account has been “compromised” – meaning that your active, current, and valid WSU ID and password becomes known to one or more other individuals besides yourself.
- ALWAYS forward any suspicious email messages that you receive to spamreport@wichita.edu immediately upon receipt, regardless of having responded to it or not. You may also contact the ITS help desk at helpdesk@wichita.eduor 316-978-HELP (x4357) if you need assistance with changing your password or to discuss any concerns regarding e-mail authenticity.
REVIEW detailed information provided by WSU ITS regarding how to recognize hazardous e-mail messages and what to do with them. You can view this information by logging into myWSU and clicking on the Phishing Email Safety Link (Home Tab > Technology Help Desk > Phishing E-Mail Safety in the top left corner of the page- see the screen image above).

Environmental Finance Center hosts Regional Asthma Summit Jan. 30-31
Asthma is a life-threatening chronic respiratory disease that affects the lives of 23 million Americans, including six million children. The CDC estimates that asthma costs the United States more than $80 billion each year in medical expenses, days missed from work or school, and deaths. In-home asthma care is proven to reduce symptom days and health care costs. Join health and housing professionals at the Midwest Regional Asthma Summit to focus on successes, opportunities and challenges facing home-based asthma interventions.
The WSU Environmental Finance Center (EFC) will host a two-day asthma summit on Wednesday, Jan. 30 and Thursday, Jan. 31 in Johnston, Iowa. Funded by EPA Region 7, this event targets health, health insurance, housing and environmental professionals in Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. Attendees will learn how sustainable financing for in-home asthma care can improve patient health and reduce the financial burden to payers (Medicaid, MCOs and insurers).
The summit keynote is Ruth Ann Norton, president and CEO of Green and Healthy Homes Initiative. Norton is a leading expert on healthy housing. She has authored more than 30 pieces of healthy housing legislation, and was awarded the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Community Health Leader (2005) and a Weinberg Foundation Fellow (2003). The second day of the summit will be a one-day training for community health workers who access environmental asthma triggers via home visits.
Student discounts on registration are available. To learn more or register, go to www.wichita.edu/efc or contact Leslie Kimble at leslie.kimble@wichita.edu.

KMUW selected to continue Wichitalks Series
Wichitalks has found a new home.
KMUW 89.1 FM will now oversee the popular "lightning talks" series, which began in 2016 and has since taken on a vibrant local life.
Wichitalks founder Kevin Falting is relocating to South Korea for his role in the Air Force. He says he chose KMUW to lead the project because of the organization's success hosting other events.
"[KMUW does] great work," Falting says. "I can't transfer my vision to [them] totally, but that's kind of the point. I want it to grow. I encourage [KMUW] to test the limits."
Wichitalks brings together creative minds and compelling stories that add value to the local community. At each event, 10 handpicked individuals share a five-minute presentation on a subject they're passionate about. With just 20 slides, each auto-progressing every 15 seconds, presentations are fast-paced, insightful and fun.
"We are thrilled to carry the torch of Wichitalks into the future," says Sarah Jane Crespo, director of community engagement at KMUW. "It has been a gem in this community and we want to see it continue at the level of professionalism and creativity that it achieved under Kevin's leadership. It's a great fit for KMUW and an event that Wichita needs to see continue."
Falting credits Michelle Frikken, Lucy Petroucheva, Seth Etter, Jennifer White, Todd Ramsey, Sheona Sleiman, and Andrea Primm for their roles in helping to make Wichitalks successful.
This year's event will be held at Roxy's Downtown.
A challenge to give blood and save lives
January is National Blood Donor Month, declared by President Richard Nixon in 1970, to pay tribute to voluntary blood donors and increase donation by others. Winter weather and illness can make it difficult for the American Red Cross to maintain a sufficient blood supply this time of year. Healthy, eligible donors are urged to give now!
All presenting donors will receive a free T-shirt.
Upcoming Blood Drive:
10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, and Thursday, Jan. 31, in the Heskett Center.
To view available times and to schedule your donation appointment, go to www.redcrossblood.org and enter the sponsor code: Wichita State.
You can also call 1-800-RedCross to schedule your blood donation appointment. Walk-ins are welcome.
Photo ID or Red Cross Donor Card required. Be sure to complete a RapidPass prior to your next blood donation to save time at your next blood drive. RapidPass lets donors complete the pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of donation, from the convenience of a computer at home or work. To get started, visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass and follow the instructions.
Blood donors with the most recent version of the Red Cross Blood Donor App can now view their health history information, including blood pressure, hemoglobin levels and pulse rate, on their donor card within the app. The donor card in the app can also be used as a donor’s official form of identification when donating. Download the app by texting “BLOODAPP” to 90999 or searching “American Red Cross” in app stores.
