College of Engineering to host Shock the Future Town Hall meeting
Dennis R. Livesay, dean of the College of Engineering, will host a College of Engineering Town Hall meeting to answer questions and spark discussion on the Shock the Future Referendum, a student-led campaign that identifies a list of academic and student success infrastructure needs.
You’re invited to attend the Town Hall at 9 a.m. today (Tuesday, Jan. 29) in P2, Room A131.
This is your opportunity to listen to student’s thoughts on WSU’s future and find out more about the potential changes coming to our campus.
2019 Biometric Screenings appointment scheduler now open
Biometric screenings for 2019 have been scheduled, and the appointment scheduler is now open. Due to high participation at 2018 screening events, additional screening staff has been scheduled for each of the WSU on-campus screening dates this year! All screening events are held 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Walk-ins may be available, but preference is given to those with scheduled appointments.
To avoid a long wait, employees and covered spouses are encouraged to schedule their appointments as early in the year as possible.
Attendees earn five HealthQuest points just for attending, and up to 18 additional points for blood pressure, blood glucose and total blood cholesterol within ideal ranges, for up to 23 points and $230 HSA/HRA rewards dollars! If your metrics are outside of the ideal ranges, you can still earn the same points by participating in the CCE workshops in the HealthQuest portal on blood pressure, blood sugar management, and/or high cholesterol, as needed.

Apply by Feb. 1 for the John A. See Innovation Award
Applications for the John A. See Innovation Award will be accepted until Friday, Feb. 1. The award was established in December 2013 by John A. See to support prototype development, which may include development of products in engineering and science, development of life-enhancing therapeutic products, creation of application of new knowledge and artistic ventures.

Become a conversation leader for Intensive English Language Center
If you enjoy learning about other cultures and meeting people from around the world, come volunteer as a conversation leader at the Intensive English Language Center. Conversation outings are from 10:10 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Wednesdays on Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27, March 6, April 3, 10, 17, 24, and May 1 and 8.
Orientation for conversation volunteers is from 10:10 a.m.-11:05 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, at the Intensive English Language Center, 1741 N. Hillside.

Duo Security Software demonstration for Administrative Processes and Procedures
WSU is required to deploy Duo two-factor authentication security to all faculty and staff. Duo adds a second layer of security to your WSU login account. Duo enhances security by requiring the use of a secondary device at login to verify your identity, which will ensure that others cannot access your account by obtaining your password. Information Technology Services is providing training on Duo Security on the following dates:
- 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, in 211 Hubbard Hall
- 2:30-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb 6, 142 RSC (limited space)
You can enroll in these sessions through my Training located on the myWSU portal; under faculty/Staff tab. The name of the training session is “Duo Security Software Demonstration.”
The purpose of this training is:
- To introduce Duo Security
- Provide demonstration on how to registering on Duo, and
- Frequently asked questions
WSU uses Duo Security for All WSU CAS (Central/Authentication Method) Authenticated sites which include myWSU, Banner 9, Self-Service, Outlook web access, PeopleAmin, Office 365 web access and more.

Chesser and Woods receive research award for project
Congrats to Wichita State University’s Amy Chesser and Nikki Keene Woods and Melody McCray-Miller, Miller’s Inc! Inneke Vargas will serve as the research assistant for the award. The award totals $250,000 during a two-year period.
Chesser will lead a project selected for Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award funding to help develop a women’s health network to increase health equity for the state of Kansas and involving women meaningfully in every aspect of PCORI’s work.

The Canta in Italia (“Sing in Italy”) study abroad program was started in 2004. Many generous individuals have made it possible for more than 60 WSU students to study in Italy.

Visualizing the Invisible
“Solving for X” is a series of exhibitions organized by the Ulrich Museum of Art in collaboration with university scholars across campus. The intent of the museum is to work with WSU scholars in all disciplines who are problem-solving for sustainability to create visualizations of their research.
The objective is to explore the potential for the museum, as a WSU public-access point for the community, to make accessible the fascinating and essential research taking place on campus.
We are thrilled by the opportunity to work with researchers across campus and excited about the challenges we will face together in discovering how to create visual pathways to understanding.

Research study seeks participants for coping with fear of spiders
Participants are being sought for a coping with Fear of Spiders Study: Exploring the effectiveness of protocols for spider fearful individuals.
Seeking participants living in Wichita or the greater Wichita area, who are age 18 and older, to take part in a study examining the effectiveness of protocols for spider fearful individuals.
If you are interested in participating, please respond to the screening survey listed in the tabs below (tinyurl.com/experiencesandbeliefs). Individuals taking part in the screening survey will have the option of being entered in to a drawing for a $40 dollar Amazon gift card or earn 2 SONA credits for WSU courses.
Qualifying individuals will be contacted for the in-person portion of the study. Those opting to participate will be given the opportunity to enter a drawing for one $80 dollar Amazon gift card or earn 4 SONA credits.

Graduate student seeking participants for coping with depression research project
A WSU graduate student working on her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology is seeking volunteers to participate in a project that compares two approaches for coping with depression. This study will be conducted within the Department of Psychology (Jabara Hall) under the supervision of Robert Zettle, and will require your involvement for 18- 20 weeks. The study involves eight weekly treatment sessions.
The first two weeks involve one hour sessions and the remaining six sessions will be half-hour sessions. Participants who complete all sessions will be contacted one week and two months later for follow-up measures.
Participants must be at least 18 and will be screened in three stages to determine their eligibility.
If you are interested, complete an online survey (30 minutes) to assess your initial eligibility. The next two stages will be conducted in person for 20 and 50 minutes respectively.

Opera Theater to present ‘Scenes and Songs’
Wichita State University Opera Theater will present its 2nd annual “Scenes and Songs” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, and Friday, Feb. 8, in Wiedemann Hall.
This year’s theme follows “the journey of life” with music by Bernstein, Copland, Mozart, Gounod, Dvořák, and WSU student composer Aaron Fink.

Three students win $64,000 each as WSU Gore Scholars
Three area high school seniors have been awarded Wichita State’s Harry Gore Memorial Scholarship. Each student will receive $64,000 to attend WSU.
The scholarship has been awarded annually since 1954 to freshmen entering WSU who display outstanding potential for leadership. It has become one of the most prestigious and coveted awards in the United States.
The winners – chosen out of a pool of 82 semi-finalists and 11 finalists during the Distinguished Scholarship Invitational – are Sarah Buie, (Middle above) Derby, homeschool; Anna Tri (L above) Andover Central High School; Gehad Qaki, (R above) Wichita Collegiate School.
