February HealthQuest upcoming events
Employees enrolled in 2019 coverage through the State Employee Health Plan can earn a premium discount worth $480 annually and HSA/HRA rewards dollars up to $500 per year for each employee and covered spouse, just by participating and logging healthy activities throughout the year. Start by registering in the HealthQuest portal.
In February, there are four events currently scheduled, worth up to 29 points total! Here are some of the upcoming events this month:

2018 Form 1095-C available online
WSU employees enrolled in medical insurance through the State of Kansas Employee Health Plan (SEHP) can now retrieve their Form 1095-C, confirming their medical insurance coverage in 2018.
These forms are available in the Member Administration Portal (MAP).

IRB announces revised application process
The revised “Common Rule” for the protection of human subjects went into effect on Jan. 21, 2019. As a result of this, we have revised our application process. There is now only one New Study Application that will need to be submitted. It can be found on the IRB website. Please make note of this and begin using the new form.
SPTE Request forms are on the way
Student Perception of Teaching Effectiveness (SPTE) Request forms will be mailed to your department in the next couple of days. If you would like, you can choose to complete a fillable pdf request form located on our website. You can also get additional SPTE information on our website.
Office of Research workshop: Finding funding
Join the Office of Research for practical tips for finding funding opportunities and the resources available to you at WSU from noon-1:30 p.m. Friday, March 8, in 405 Jardine Hall. The workshop, “Finding Funding – Funding Search Resources; Foundation and Industry Funding Opportunities; Institutional vs Individual Awards,” will be presented by Fran Cook, senior grants / contracts administrator and training manager.
University Libraries Town Hall today (Wednesday, Feb. 6)
Kathy Downes, dean of the University Libraries, will host a University Libraries Town Hall meeting to answer questions and spark discussion on the Shock the Future Referendum, a student-led campaign that identifies a list of academic and student success infrastructure needs.
You’re invited to attend the Town Hall at 4 p.m. today (Wednesday, Feb. 6) in Ablah Library, C-Space (first floor).
This is your opportunity to listen to students’ thoughts on WSU’s future and find out more about the potential changes coming to our campus.
2019 Biometric Screenings appointment scheduler now open
Biometric screenings for 2019 have been scheduled, and the appointment scheduler is now open. Due to high participation at 2018 screening events, additional screening staff has been scheduled for each of the WSU on-campus screening dates this year! All screening events are held 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Walk-ins may be available, but preference is given to those with scheduled appointments.
To avoid a long wait, employees and covered spouses are encouraged to schedule their appointments as early in the year as possible.
Attendees earn five HealthQuest points just for attending, and up to 18 additional points for blood pressure, blood glucose and total blood cholesterol within ideal ranges, for up to 23 points and $230 HSA/HRA rewards dollars! If your metrics are outside of the ideal ranges, you can still earn the same points by participating in the CCE workshops in the HealthQuest portal on blood pressure, blood sugar management, and/or high cholesterol, as needed.

Accessibility Tip of the Week: Assessing Accessibility
Tip: Learn how to assess the accessibility of your documents. It is important that all student-facing documents at WSU are accessible, but how do you assess accessibility?
- Let the tools like the accessibility checkers in Microsoft and Adobe products and the “dials” in Blackboard guide you. Work toward full accessibility in your accessibility checks.
- Look for places where color contrast is poor and impacts your ability to read what’s on a page.
- Try to “highlight” a line of text in a PDF. If you can’t grab a single line of text with your cursor, your document is probably inaccessible to a screen reader.
- Look for color being used as the sole means of communicating information. Color coding of this type is inaccessible to individuals who are color blind.
- Make sure you have Acrobat Pro DC on your work computer. If you don’t have access, contact ITS for help.

Office of Research to hold compliance workshop on Friday, Feb. 8
The Office of Research Compliance Workshop: University Export Compliance 101 will be held from noon-1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in 405 Jardine Hall. The presenter will be Becky Hundley, MBA Director of Research Compliance.
U.S. export laws apply to higher education and you have personal liability. The Research Compliance Office is here to serve as a resource and provide training to protect not only the university, but help you, as an individual, be better informed and avoid export violations.
WSU Weekly Briefing to feature a Shock the Future update from the dean of the College of Applied Studies
The WSU Weekly Briefing will begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 7) in the Marcus Welcome Center.
Shirley Lefever, dean of the College of Applied Studies, will talk about the potential impact of the Shock the Future referendum on her college.
Kevin Harrison, community engagement coordinator, Diversity and Community Engagement, will give the overall university update.
The briefing will be livestreamed and available later that day at WSU Weekly Briefing. There will be time for questions following the briefing.
Writing Now / Reading Now: Margaret Malone
Margaret Malone is WSU’s spring 2019 visiting emerging write, and the author of “People Like You,” a 2016 Pen Hemingway finalist. A reception for Malone will be held at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 7) at the Ulrich Museum of Art, followed by a reading at 6 p.m.
Writing Now / Reading Now is cosponsored by the WSU Department of English, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Watermark Books and Café, and the Ulrich Museum of Art.
Research study seeks participants for coping with fear of spiders
Participants are being sought for a coping with Fear of Spiders Study: Exploring the effectiveness of protocols for spider fearful individuals.
Seeking participants living in Wichita or the greater Wichita area, who are age 18 and older, to take part in a study examining the effectiveness of protocols for spider fearful individuals.
If you are interested in participating, please respond to the screening survey listed in the tabs below (tinyurl.com/experiencesandbeliefs). Individuals taking part in the screening survey will have the option of being entered in to a drawing for a $40 dollar Amazon gift card or earn 2 SONA credits for WSU courses.
Qualifying individuals will be contacted for the in-person portion of the study. Those opting to participate will be given the opportunity to enter a drawing for one $80 dollar Amazon gift card or earn 4 SONA credits.

What training do you need?
Instructional Design and Access has a faculty training day planned in March, and we would like to hear from faculty before we finalize our schedule.
What training topics would you find useful? IDA typically provides training in Blackboard, online pedagogy, accessibility. We can also offer training in manipulating images for your class, using social media, and other related topics, and we regularly partner with ITS for faculty versions of Microsoft trainings.

Research talk on ‘Free Speech, Academic Freedom and Teaching in the Humanities’
We all know that students aren’t allowed to use racial slurs in the classroom, but how do we—as teachers—justify these restrictions when confronted by those who claim students should have “free speech” and “academic freedom?”
Join the English Graduate Student Association for a research talk on "Free Speech, Academic Freedom, and Teaching in the Humanities" by Dan Colson, associate professor of English at Emporia State University at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in 100 Lindquist Hall.
Colson regularly publishes on issues of academic freedom and pedagogy, including “On the Ground in Kansas: Social Media, Academic Freedom and the Fight for Higher Education,” published by the AAUP Journal of Academic Freedom, and “Teaching Radically with Koch Money,” published in Radical Teacher.
Most recently, his article “Virtually White: Teaching Race in Online Classes,” can be found in Teaching with Tension: Race, Resistance, and Reality in the Classroom, an edited collection that addresses “the extent to which attitudes about race, impacted by the current political moment in the United States, have produced pedagogical challenges for professors in the humanities.”
At Emporia State, Colson regularly teaches classes in 20th century American literature and African American literature.
Innovation fellow founds STEAM initiative
Sierra Bonn, a junior majoring in biomedical engineering, was recently recognized as one of the six Wichita State students named as University Innovation Fellows. In this role as an innovation leader at WSU, Sierra wants to focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) education.

‘Safe Haven’ by Student Government Association in Cadman Art Gallery
“Safe Haven” is an art exhibition presented by SGA Safety. It will be on display now to Friday, Feb. 15, in Cadman Art Gallery, first floor, Rhatigan Student Center. Join the artists for their opening reception at The Cadman beginning at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11.
This SGA juried exhibition is going to be a benefit for the WSU Center for Combating Human Trafficking, as well as a method to raise awareness for their cause. They offer many supportive programs, and they will be able to offer even more services with assistance.
The show would be primarily driven through community artists who have donated their work to this show, help market the show, and hopefully sell work with 100 percent of the profits going toward the center’s outreach efforts.
The SGA Safety and Student Services committee are in charge of artist outreach and the overall marketing success of the event.
