IRB announces revised application process
The revised “Common Rule” for the protection of human subjects went into effect on Jan. 21, 2019. As a result of this, we have revised our application process. There is now only one New Study Application that will need to be submitted. It can be found on the IRB website. Please make note of this and begin using the new form.
Gearhart to give legislative update today (Friday, Feb. 8)

College of Fine Arts dean to host Town Hall on Shock the Future Referendum
Rodney Miller, dean of the College of Fine Arts, will host a College of Fine Arts Town Hall meeting to answer questions and spark discussion on the Shock the Future Referendum, a student-led campaign that identifies a list of academic and student success infrastructure needs.
You’re invited to attend the Town Hall at 3:30 p.m. today (Friday, Feb. 8) in 210 McKnight Art Center.
This is your opportunity to listen to students’ thoughts on WSU’s future and find out more about the potential changes coming to our campus.
WSU Athletics Director Darron Boatright receives contract extension

Director of Athletics Darron Boatright’s contract has been renewed through June 2022.
Acting President Richard Muma said: “Darron has done an excellent job since taking over the department in April 2015. He was instrumental in WSU’s move into the American Athletic Conference, the apparel deal with Under Armour and fundraising support for improving campus facilities. Most importantly to President Bardo and me, our students have thrived athletically, and academically, under Darron’s leadership.”
As Director of Athletics, Boatright has overall supervision and leadership of the intercollegiate athletics program, budget, personnel, compliance with conference and NCAA rules and regulations, fundraising and other duties as assigned by the President. He reports to the President and serves as a member of his Executive Team.
In the past four years, Wichita State has captured 22 conference championships, 17 NCAA Tournament appearances and three conference all-sport trophies.
Under Boatright, student athletes had at least a 3.1 cumulative grade point average every semester, including a school record 3.256 cumulative GPA during the Fall 2018 semester.
“I’m honored that the University believes in what we are accomplishing in the athletic department and how we are developing our student-athletes,” Boatright said. “I’m looking forward to continue working closely with our coaches and staff while improving the experience of our student-athletes, both at the university and in the community.”
Before joining Wichita State in 2010, Boatright was a member of the athletics staffs at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Murray State University and the University of Alabama.
Boatright earned a bachelor's degree from Murray State, graduating with a double major in political science and history. He earned a master's degree in Higher Education Administration at Alabama.
Women’s Studies and Religion Department seeking submissions for upcoming summit
The Department of Women’s Studies and Religion is seeking submissions for presentations for its third annual Diverse Women’s Summit from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, March 7, in the Shirley Beggs Ballroom. The theme for this year’s summit is Accessibility and Inclusion, but other topics are also welcome.
Students from any college or department may submit proposals, approximately 300 words, for a 10-15 minute presentation. Proposals and any questions may be sent to rannfrid.thelle@wichita.edu.

Volunteers sought for upcoming conference at Wichita State
Wichita State is the host of the 27th annual MBLGTACC conference Friday to Sunday, Feb. 15-17. The Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Asexual College Conference (MBLGTACC) is an annual conference held to connect, educate and empower queer and trans+ college students, faculty and staff around the Midwest and beyond.
The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Century II Conference Center. This year’s event is expected to draw more than 1,200 students from around the Midwest, and feature speakers and entertainers including Nyle DiMarco, Janaya Khan, Pidgeon Pigonas, and Penny Tration from Ru Paul’s Drag Race Season 10.
To make this event a success, we need your help! You can choose a volunteer opportunity that fits your schedule. Any person who signs up for three or more volunteer spots is eligible for free registration. This is the conference’s first time in Kansas, so let’s show them some great Shocker hospitality!
Call for Presentations / Save the Date: 6th Annual Gender & Sexuality in Kansas Conference
We are currently seeking submissions of original research, training / workshops, and other scholarship from any discipline from students, scholars, staff, and interested others associated with a college or university in Kansas.
The deadline for submissions is Monday, Feb. 25. We hope that you will consider submitting a proposal consisting of a 200-300 word summary of your proposed presentation, and/or encourage your students and colleagues to submit proposals.
The conference will take place on Friday, March 29 in the Rhatigan Student Center.
Our keynote speaker for this year’s conference is Monique Morris, award-winning author of the book “Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools.” Her talk will be titled “Education is Freedom Work (And Other Critical Reflections about Responses to School Pushout for Black Girls).”

Poetry Out Loud Regionals: National Recitation Contest
Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. The Ulrich Museum of Art will host this event at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 9) with a reception to follow.

Mary Shelley, Percy Bysshe Shelly, Lord Byron, and John Polidori embark on a writing contest to see who can pen the best ghost story. Mary, upon awakening from a nightmare, begins writing her masterpiece, “Frankenstein,” when she is struck by an affliction that visits students, academics and authors the world over: The Dreaded Writers' Block. Solve puzzles to help Mary finish her story!
Gabor spearheads Little Free Library initiative in Haysville
To promote community, reading and imagination, Danielle Gabor, assistant director for WSU Haysville/WSU South, has been spearheading an initiative to install a network of Little Free Libraries (LFL) in the City of Haysville in collaboration with the Haysville City Hall, USD 261, the Haysville Community Library, Haysville Chamber of Commerce and other Haysville business partners.
With Danielle Gabor’s own wonderful artwork on its structure, the first and flagship LFL was completed and installed with the help of USD 261 right outside the WSU Haysville facility recently, and the Haysville Sun-Times newspaper recently reported the story. Volunteer at Wu’s Big Event X
Community Service Board invites you to join us on Saturday, Feb. 9 to make a huge impact in the Wichita community by volunteering at Wu’s Big Event X. Individuals, organizations, faculty, staff, alumni, friends and family are all encouraged to participate in a fun-filled day of service.
The event will be start on the third floor of the RSC in the Shirley Beggs Ballroom. Check-in will run from 8:30-8:50 a.m. We will have fun speakers, a breakfast including muffins and coffee, and you will be given a collectible Wu’s Big Event T-shirt.
Participants will load onto buses and be at a service site by 10 a.m. and volunteer until 1 p.m. Participants will then get back to the RSC for fun celebration activities and lunch (a Chartwells boxed lunch containing sandwich, chips, and fruit). The event will end by 2 p.m.
We hope to serve more than 750 collective volunteer hours on Feb. 9, and we need your help to make this happen!
WSU to Honor Breast Cancer Survivors on Feb. 17
The Wichita State women's basketball program will be honoring breast cancer survivors
at the game against SMU at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, in Charles Koch Arena.
The matchup is the annual Play4Kay "pink" game and $2 of every ticket sold will benefit
the Kay Yow fund supporting breast cancer research and awareness.
