Remi Chou, an assistant professor in electrical engineering and computer science at Wichita State, has received a two-year, $156,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for research to ensure secure transfer of confidential information over wireless networks.
“The ubiquity of wireless devices makes them a target for malicious users, who could compromise them and use them as a proxy for malicious cyber activities, including impersonation, email spamming, click-fraud activities or denial of service attacks,” said Chou, who is working to increase protection from such attacks.
Severe weather preparedness drill scheduled for Tuesday, March 5
This year, as we have done in the past, WSU will participate in the annual statewide severe weather preparedness drill.
The annual drill this year is Tuesday, March 5. If the weather is clear that day, all of the severe weather sirens in Sedgwick County will go off at 10 a.m. When the severe weather sirens sound, proceed to your designated severe weather shelter area.
Emergency Building Coordinators in each building will ensure that all building occupants safely make their way to the designated severe weather shelter area.
Departments should use this opportunity to ensure that all faculty, staff and students know where to go to protect themselves in a severe weather event.
SEM check-in: Increase transfer enrollment

SEM Goal 8: Increase enrollment of new fall transfer students.
In conjunction with the university’s Strategic Planning process, WSU has developed a Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) plan for future growth. To stay informed on the progress toward our goals, each month we will provide the status of one of the goals and provide information for you to assist us in moving forward together.
Transfer students play an important role in enrollment. They account for nearly half of all new undergraduate degree-seeking students in a typical fall term. Accordingly, in fall 2017 we created a SEM goal specifically for transfers. For fall 2018, we have seen an increase of 6.6 percent, or 79 additional new transfers, over fall 2017, for a total of 1,269 students.

Plans call for creation of SROTC Extension Unit at Wichita State
Wichita State University has had a longstanding relationship with our nation's military. From our students, faculty and staff who have bravely served our country and who we are honored to have as integral part of Shocker Nation; to our Student's Veterans Organization; to research; to our newest satellite location on McConnell Air Force Base, hosted in conjunction with WSU Tech, WSU is proud to be a part of and have the opportunity to support our country's armed forces.
Now, we are excited to announce planning for the creation of a Provisional Army Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps (SROTC) Extension Unit right here on our campus.
WSU joins our fellow Regents' institutions in continuing a collegiate tradition that allows students to complete their bachelor's degree, while simultaneously preparing them for potential commission as an officer in the United States military. The starting date has not yet been announced.
Students enrolled in the SROTC program will take courses offered in military science in addition to those required by their declared major, and will be eligible for a number of scholarship opportunities. The curriculum is being proposed to be housed in the School of Criminal Justice, while the administrative oversight will be in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement.

Heartland Wichita Black Chamber of Commerce to hold news conference at WSU to announce a HWBCC Football Classic
The Heartland Wichita Black Chamber of Commerce (HWBCC) will hold a news conference at 11:30 a.m. today (Thursday, Feb. 28) in the Marcus Welcome Center at Wichita State University to announce a HWBCC Football Classic on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Cessna Stadium. The theme for the event will be “Unity Builds Community.”
HWBCC is focusing on expanding its relationships beyond the city of Wichita by inviting other champions for higher education with a strong emphasis on valuing diversity and inclusion through the state of Kansas and the heartland region.
Join HWBCC as we welcome two neighboring partners to the city of Wichita and meet other potential sponsors and supporters of this inaugural event.

priority. Campus Safety-Active Threat Incident Planning is a live training initiative
to enhance WSU’s proactive approach to ensure a safe campus environment and to prepare
our faculty, staff and students in case of an incident of campus violence. It will
focus on two areas: 1) what to do in an active campus threat incident, and 2) how
to identify and report behaviors of concern.

Third Annual Diverse Women’s Summit set for March 6-8
The Women's Studies Department will host its Third Annual Diverse Women's Summit Wednesday, March 6 to Friday, March 8, with the theme Accessibility and Inclusivity
The kick-off event will be the keynote by Katie Batza from the University of Kansas, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, in Shirley Beggs Ballroom.
Students will give presentations from 9 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Thursday, March 7, showcasing what's going on at the university in Women's Studies.
On Friday, March 8, we partner with JumpStar Stories and Griots for a program of creative performances from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in Hubbard Hall, and in the evening we partner with Positive Directions for a program in Shirley Beggs Ballroom, featuring River Huson.
Schedule altered for home-opening baseball series
Because of forecasted cold temperatures and winter weather Saturday, March 2, and
Sunday, March 3, Wichita State's 2019 home-opening series against the Creighton Bluejays
has been altered.
The two teams will now play a doubleheader at Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field, beginning
at 1 p.m. Friday, March 1. A decision on whether or not Saturday's contest will be
played will be made Friday afternoon. Sunday's game has been canceled.
Both games of Friday's twin bill will feature $3 admission. Follow Wichita State

Graduate student seeking participants for coping with depression research project
A WSU graduate student working on her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology is seeking volunteers to participate in a project that compares two approaches for coping with depression. This study will be conducted within the Department of Psychology (Jabara Hall) under the supervision of Robert Zettle, and will require your involvement for 18- 20 weeks. The study involves eight weekly treatment sessions.
The first two weeks involve one hour sessions and the remaining six sessions will be half-hour sessions. Participants who complete all sessions will be contacted one week and two months later for follow-up measures.
Participants must be at least 18 and will be screened in three stages to determine their eligibility.
If you are interested, complete an online survey (30 minutes) to assess your initial eligibility. The next two stages will be conducted in person for 20 and 50 minutes respectively.
