President Bardo’s funeral procession will drive through campus early this afternoon (Monday, March 18)
On March 7, President John Bardo was in an ambulance to his family’s home, following a visit to the Wesley Medical Center emergency room. The ambulance driver asked if there was anything he could do for him. Dr. Bardo said yes, he hadn’t been to campus in three months, so please drive around WSU. The driver said Dr. Bardo wouldn’t be able to see anything from the back of the vehicle. Undeterred, Dr. Bardo said it would be satisfaction enough for him to know he’d been to campus.
In that spirit, the president’s procession will drive through campus early Monday afternoon March 18, on the way from his private funeral services to his burial. The procession, expected between 12:30-1:30 p.m., will include University Police vehicles and a vehicle carrying First Lady Deborah Bardo and members of the family. The motorcade will pause at least five times while passing through campus. The stops are noted in the image above or on this interactive map.
A text will be sent to everyone on the Rave alert system shortly before the motorcade arrives on campus. Provost and Acting President Rick Muma said it is at the discretion of faculty if they want to dismiss classes to view the funeral procession.

The motorcade will enter and exit campus from 17th Street as a salute to Dr. Bardo’s interest in the Fairmount neighborhood south of 17th, and his joy in the realization of the Experiential Engineering Building, which opened in January 2017, launching a wave of construction.
The procession will move north through Innovation Campus and then circle around and through the traditional campus, pausing briefly near Marcus Welcome Center, Wiedemann Hall, the 1970 Memorial, NIAR and the Rhatigan Student Center. The stop along Yale Walkway will be between the RSC and Neff Hall. The Bardos met in Neff Hall in 1974 and married in 1975.
A celebration of President Bardo’s life will be announced later this spring.

Faculty and staff are invited to engage in Honors
Each semester, more than 60 faculty and staff from across campus teach an honors college seminar or department honors course, coordinate interdisciplinary and disciplinary honors curricula, mentor an honors option agreement or student research project, or serve on a faculty committee hosted by Honors. Honors invites faculty to work individually and in collaboration with their colleges to increase honors opportunities across campus.
To propose an honors college seminar for spring or fall 2020, submit a Seminar Course Proposal Form by Wednesday, May 1.
Faculty are invited to develop and teach Honors College seminars including first-year seminars. Information about Honors education and opportunities to engage with Honors inside and outside the classroom are available on the Cohen Honors College website in the Faculty section. Watkins Visiting Professorship Lecture Series: Chemistry

Patrick L. Holland, professor of chemistry at Yale University, will present a public and technical lecture today (Monday, March 18) and tomorrow (Tuesday, March 19) respectively.
The public lecture, “The global nitrogen cycle and nitrogen fixation by iron complexes,” will be presented at 3:30 p.m. today (Monday, March 18), in 224 McKinley Hall.
The technical lecture, “Nitrogenase modeling using using iron complexes,” will be presented at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, March 19) in 224 McKinley Hall.
The Watkins Visiting Professorship was created in 1974 by the Watkins Foundation.

Keller-Mathers to deliver interactive lecture at WSU on Monday, March 25
The WSU College Readiness Partnership Initiative presents Sue Keller-Mathers from the International Center for Creative Studies at Buffalo State College. Keller-Mathers will deliver an interactive lecture open to WSU faculty and staff from 1-3 p.m. Monday, March 25, in Corbin Connect (room 155A) in the Corbin Education Center. Top Career Proofing Skill of 2019: Creativity as the Competitive Advantage
Higher Education institutions are recognizing the need to develop a culture of creativity. Stanford’s d-School, Sheridan College’s “Creativity Campus” and Buffalo State’s International Center for Studies in Creativity are just a few examples.
Creativity is described by Linkedin as the most in-demand skill of 2019 and the number one “Career Proof” skill. With the rise of automation, the demand for workers who can think in novel ways and solve problems that have never been encountered before is critical.
In this presentation, elements of a creative campus culture are examined. Participants will engage in activities to enhance their creative behavior, explore ways to utilize creative thinking to positively affect student learning inside and outside the classroom and lead change initiatives that embrace new ways of thinking.
Dr. Keller-Mathers is a faculty member and Associate Professor at the International Center for Studies in Creativity at Buffalo State College where she teaches graduate courses in creativity, chairs the curriculum committee, facilitates organizational change and delivers creativity workshops and graduate courses on five continents and over a dozen countries. She published more than 30 articles, chapters and books on creativity, creative behavior and the use of deliberate methods to enhance creative teaching and learning.
Keller-Mathers served as the Interim Director of the International Graduate Program for Educators, providing a master’s program and professional development for more than 1,000 educators working abroad at American and International Schools. Keller-Mathers diverse clientele includes school districts, universities, government entities, businesses and organizations looking to embed creativity into their practices. Dr. Keller-Mathers holds a BS in Elementary Education and an M.S. in Creativity from Buffalo State and an Ed.D in Curriculum and Instruction from the Argosy University Sarasota.

Welcome Alma Hidalgo-Blankinship to Wichita State
The WSU Career Development Center welcomes Alma Hidalgo-Blankinship, M.S.E. as the new Barton School of Business Career Specialist.
Alma is the primary contact for all Business students seeking co-ops, internships, and post-degree employment. She can help by reviewing resumes, conducting mock interviews, offering job search techniques and more.
Alma is a Fort Hays State University graduate with a Bachelor's in Graphic Design and a Master’s in Higher Education Student Affairs.
Previously she worked as the coordinator for recruitment events and orientation programs at Kansas State University. She is very excited to now be working with current students and being a resource to their professional development.

Time for students to check their progress
Before much more time passes, students should be checking their progress in their classes and reflect on the goals they set for themselves at the beginning of the semester. Students can check their grades thus far in Blackboard and should be participating in the academic success programs that exist if they are worried about their academic performance. If students need someone to help them focus and set a plan for the rest of the semester, they can contact a Success Coach or Peer Coach in the Shocker Learning Center.
Police sergeant candidates to give campus presentations
The WSU Police Department has changed the sergeants’ assessment process this year to include a campus presentation. The two candidates will make a presentation on community policing on the university campus at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday March 21, in 314 RSC.

Entries may be made from anything that is edible (cake, bread, crackers, gelatin, fruit, vegetables, candy, etc.) as long as it can be displayed for a few hours without melting or spoiling.

The 37th Annual Exposure Photography Competition
Celebrate 37 years of student photographers at Exposure, an annual juried photography exhibit displaying various works in the categories of digital, analogue and digital manipulation submitted by Wichita State University student photographers.
The show will be on display from today (Monday, March 18) to Friday, March 29. The reception and awards ceremony will be from 7-6:30 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, March 19) in the Bluestem Lounge.
