Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) recently released its annual Transfer Feedback Report, announcing that WSU remains the No. 1 transfer destination for eight years in a row.

Telecommunications upgrade update
Our service provider for our main campus phone system is upgrading our lines to a new technology and coordinating the cutover with us. We do not expect interruption, but it is possible.
We have already completed testing, placing calls in different formats (long distance, international, transfer to cellular, etc.). So far testing has been positive and successful. We will route all outbound calls to this new service.
We will be porting our university numbers to the new system at 10 p.m. Friday, March 29, and we expect the cutover to take one-to-four hours.
This will be done with technicians from Telecommunications and our vendor on site ready to address any issues we find. Again, we do not expect interruption and should be able to roll back to the old equipment if something does fail. However, due to the risk there could be interruption of service, we do want anyone who will be on campus at that time to be aware.

National Graduate Student Appreciation Week is April 1-5
The Graduate School celebrates all grad students, and there are fun events planned for National Graduate Student Appreciation Week April 1-5. We want to give a big shout out to our Graduate Student Association (GSA) leadership team. Accessibility Tip of the Week: When students present content
Tip: Ensure students are properly trained in accessibility. If you have students who provide any course-related instruction including presentations, leading discussions, and peer reviewing written work, then you should consider requiring related accessibility training for your students.
- You do not have to provide this training yourself. The Kansas Accessibility Resources Network has free online classes designed for students. Each class takes 30 minutes or less, and students who score 85% or higher on the related quiz will receive a digital credential and a certificate of successful completion that they can share with you to prove they have been trained. These courses can be found at KSARN.org.
- If you need your students to be trained in an accessibility topic not currently provided by KSARN, you can make a request for additional training to be developed by sending an email to KSARN@wichita.edu.

Parking update for Friday, March 29
WSU Baseball will host a Kid's Day Game at noon Friday, March 29, at Eck Stadium. In order to accommodate the buses for the 1,500 kids, the east half of lot 5 Thursday evening will be blocked, represented by a red rectangle above. The lot will reopen after the students leave the game.
WSU Weekly Briefing to feature Kim Sandlin presenting how WSU ranks in the social mobility index
The WSU Weekly Briefing will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 28, in the Marcus Welcome Center. The featured speaker will be Kim Sandlin explaining how WSU ranks in the social mobility index.
Kevin Harrison, community engagement coordinator, Diversity and Community Engagement, will give the overall university update.
The briefing will be livestreamed and available later that day at WSU Weekly Briefing. There will be time for questions following the briefing.

Birzer to be panel moderator of Wichita Public Library’s Candid Conversations
Candid Conversations - The Position of Race within the Criminal Justice System: Strategies for Reform,” will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at the Advanced Learning Library, 711 W. 2nd Street in Wichita. Michael Birzer, professor in the School of Criminal Justice at WSU, will be the panel moderator.
The discussion will focus on the intersectionality of race and the criminal justice system. The panel will consist of criminal justice executives from the courts, corrections, and police. The panel is part of the Wichita Public Library’s “Candid Conversations on Race series.

Women in Public Service to host conference April 4 at WSU
Join Women in Public Service for the “Year of Yes Conference” with keynote speaker Opal Mauldin-Jones, city manager in Lancaster, Texas - Winner of League of Woman in Government Trailblazer Award on Thursday, April 4, at the Marcus Welcome Center. Mauldin-Jones will present the keynote address “Say Yes to Now and Learn How to Thrive,” at 9:30 a.m.
Women in Public Service (WPS) is an association of public service professionals created to inspire past, current and future generations by addressing topics relevant to women in public service, while instilling knowledge through education, networking and professional development that strengthens the leadership in our local government and communities.
The one-day conference will be held from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4.

The Graduate School & Career Development invite faculty to lunch and a discussion with Anne Krook, Ph.D., titled “Women and Men in the Workplace: Colleagues & Allies.” Krook has a long-standing history of topics related to women in the workplace, but was recently inspired by the #metoo movement to create discussions that address systemic issues that may hinder our success. WSU undergraduate students present their research to the legislature
The Kansas Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol is an opportunity for WSU undergraduate students to showcase their research in Topeka. Originally scheduled during a February snow storm, three students were able to attend in person this year. These students presented their research to fellow students from Kansas public universities, State representatives as well as Andrew Hippisley, LAS dean, Rick Muma, acting president, and Linnea Glenmaye, associate vice president of WSU. The Cohen Honors College facilitates this event each year for all WSU undergraduates and thanks these amazing students and their faculty mentors.

Opera Theater to present double-bill
Wichita State University Opera Theater will present two masterpieces in one night, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4, to Saturday, April 6, and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7, in Miller Concert Hall, Duerksen Fine Arts Center.
Each opera lasts less than one hour.
Ravel’s “L’enfant et les Sortilèges” tells the story of an unruly child who is forced to face all he has harmed when animals and household objects come to life.
“Gianni Schicchi” brings us the story of the Donati family who try to change the will of a dear departed, only to be outwitted by the wily Gianni Schicchi. The opera will feature WSU legend Samuel Ramey.
WSU Opera Theater is under the direction of Alan Held. Mark Laycock will lead the WSU Orchestra. Tickets are available online at WSU Fine Arts Box Office or call 978-3233. WSU students receive a free ticket with their Shocker ID.

Hippodrome 2019 is just around the corner and the Wichita State Traditions Committee is in search of judges for our variety act and skit competitions. Hippodrome is the longest running tradition at Wichita State and we would love to have you be a part of making this year a success.
Acting on depression project at Wichita State
Depression is one the most common and debilitating of all mental health conditions. Nearly 20 percent of us will experience depression at some point during our lifetime, and within this year it is projected by the World Health Organization to become the second leading cause of disability worldwide.
A project is currently underway in the Department of Psychology at Wichita State University to investigate different variations of behavioral activation in helping individuals better manage and cope with depression. This program, conducted by Yvonne Chaw, a doctoral student in clinical psychology, under the supervision of Robert Zettle, director of Clinical Training, seeks volunteer participants who are currently experiencing at least a moderate level of depression.
Comparisons with other psychological approaches, as well as medication, has identified behavioral activation as one of the more effective means of coping with depression. As its name suggests, behavioral activation stresses the importance of systematically re-engaging in a range of activities that are often abandoned in the face of depression.
Those interested in participating in the project will first be asked to complete a brief, online screening survey that assesses their level of depression and obtains some relevant background information. Those who qualify will be contacted with additional information and details about further participating in the treatment phase of this project which consists of eight weekly, individual sessions following some further assessment.
Our hope is that participants will learn some new strategies for more effectively coping with depression and that the overall findings from this project may also help improve psychological services offered to others who also struggle with it.
Interested individuals 18 or older experiencing a least a moderate level of depression can access the brief screening survey.

Service-Learning Showcase registration open
The Service-Learning Showcase will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, in 233 RSC. It is a unique opportunity for students who participate in service-learning through applied learning opportunities to showcase their experience through a research or reflective poster about the application of their course work to current community issues.
The showcase is an open forum for students to interact with faculty, staff, community partners and other students to engage in conversation about WSU’s commitment to the public good. Awards are presented in the following categories: Overall Service-Learning, Community Impact, Innovation and Creativity (i.e., problem solving), and Collaboration/Leadership.

The debate will be moderated by Brandon J. Johnson, Wichita City Council Member from District 1, and will cover a variety of topics from platform points to broad overviews of their hopes for student government.
