Help create Graduate School opportunities for spring undergraduates
Chairs and Coordinators,
With declining Graduate School applications, we need you to create opportunities for the recruitment of spring 2019 undergraduates. This month, there are several strategies you can use to help the university boost graduate student enrollment for fall.
- Ask faculty members to individually speak with students they believe are good candidates for Graduate School.
- Target specific classes that seniors take and have the graduate coordinator, chair and/or faculty member promote the program opportunities/benefits.
- Partner with departments that don’t have graduate programs.
- Promote your graduate program on social media until the deadline. Highlight your selling points, career benefits and opportunities available.
- Host an “open house” where seniors can connect with faculty/grad students and learn about your program.

Annual training on budgeting system coming April 29-May 3
The time for submission of FY 2020 annual budget requests is fast approaching. If you are a Budget Officer or Review Officer, annual training on the budgeting system and process is required and will be held Monday, April 29 to Friday, May 3.
Sign-up for the training sessions by going to myWSU and enrolling through the myTraining link for the sessions titled “Fiscal Year Budget and TM1 Information.” We will also hold two open labs on Wednesday, May 8 and 15 to provide more targeted one-on-one training for those who may need additional assistance after attending one of the initial training sessions.
Planned dates for completion of the various phases of the budget process are outlined below. Please keep in mind these dates (except for the training) may fluctuate.
- April 29 – May 3 Budget and TM1 Training Sessions
- May 8 Open Lab
- May 15 Open Lab
- May 24 Final day for Budget and Review Officers to enter requests in the system
- May 31 Final day for Vice Presidents to review / enter requests in the system

Annualized Salary Spread for Academic Year 2019-20
For exempt nine / 10-month employees (faculty and UP) not currently on salary spread but interested in participating in this program, an agreement form must be signed. Salary spread payments for academic year 2019-20 will begin with the pay period that starts on Aug. 11, 2019 (pay date of Sept. 6, 2019). To exercise this option, please complete the nine / 10-month Annualized Salary Agreement form.
If you are currently on annualized salary spread, it remains in force from year-to-year unless you elect to discontinue it. To discontinue it, you must notify the Office of Human Resources in writing prior to July 3, 2019. Complete the cancellation form.
General Faculty Meeting agenda for Monday, April 29
Faculty are encouraged to attend the General Faculty Meeting from 3:30-5 p.m. Monday, April 29, in 208 Hubbard Hall.
President Andy Tompkins and Provost Rick Muma will be speaking. Faculty will vote on the policies related to Low Performance / Dismissal for Cause, and moving the 1st Year General Education Seminar to a requirement of all first year in college students.

Lynne Davis shares commentary on the Cathedral of Notre Dame
Following the recent fire at the Cathedral of Notre Dame, Lynne Davis, the Robert L. Town Distinguished Professor of Organ at Wichita State University, has written a reflective piece, “Fire: The Unthinkable.” Davis is familiar with the cathedral and the Great Organ and Choir Organ, having performed two concerts there.
Read her thoughts on the history and significance of the Cathedral of Notre Dame and its world-renowned Great Organ.
Graduate Research and Scholarly Projects (GRASP) Symposium coming April 26
All are welcome to join the Graduate School at the annual university-wide symposium of student research and poster presentations on Friday, April 26, on the third floor, RSC!
Come support students at the opening remarks and poster session from 9 a.m.-noon. Submit your “People’s Choice” vote for best poster. Judges will review posters and listen to presenters. Cash prizes will be awarded to winners at the closing general session from 1-1:30 p.m.

SI and MGC announce ribbon-cutting ceremony tomorrow (Friday, April 26)
Student Involvement (SI), in conjunction with the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Multicultural Greek Council Quad at 11 a.m. Friday, April 26, on the RSC east patio. The rain location will be the RSC east atrium.
The idea for an MGC Quad was first discussed in spring 2013. The Multicultural Greek Council, Student Involvement and university entities were in support of this idea, however, it took several years to bring the quad to fruition. Over a six-year period, the quad went through several redesigns, and monies were secured to pay for the landscaping, pillars and banners incorporated into the space.
The location of the quad, at the crossroads of the Rhatigan Student Center, Clinton Hall, Neff Hall and the Geology Building, was chosen by the MGC Council and Facilities Planning. Feedback from students within the MGC Council was gathered on the landscaping, pillars and banners.
The purpose of the quad is to provide our culturally based and National Pan-Hellenic Council Greek chapters a visible space on campus. These chapters traditionally do not have chapter facilities. Providing them a space on campus increases their visibility and affords them a gathering space.
The quad currently hosts active chapters on campus. As more culturally based and National Pan-Hellenic Council Greek chapters are brought to Wichita State, banners will be added to represent these groups.
The chapters currently on campus include, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc., Kappa Delta Chi Sorority Inc., Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority Inc., Chi Sigma Tau Fraternity Inc.
Two more chapters will be added to the quad over the next year; they include Lambda Pi Upsilon Sorority, Latinas Poderosas Unidas Inc. and Mu Delta Alpha.

‘Search Exception’ changes to be implemented on April 29
Changes will be implemented to the process for search waivers, emergency hires, and promotions – referred to as “Search Exceptions” – on Monday, April 29. The revised process is standardized for all areas of the University. Instructions have been created (found on the HR webpage) to provide guidance in completing the Search Exception Request Form and the overall process.
Human Resources will serve as the centralized point-of-contact for the process, including receiving the electronic submission of search exception requests and entering all information into PeopleAdmin.

Fiske Hall to be rededicated on Friday, May 3
The Departments of Philosophy and History invite the WSU community to the rededication of Fiske Hall at 3 p.m. Friday, May 3, with a short program, including a surprise from 1906.
First dedicated in June 1906 as Fairmount College’s men’s residence hall (pictured above), Fiske has served many roles over the years, including home to the Department of Music, ROTC, Upward Bound, and the Departments of Philosophy and History.
A century of use and lack of accessibility prompted a major overhaul that included a new elevator wing and a complete renovation of the interior of the main structure. Now complete, Fiske Hall is ready for its next century of service to Shocker Nation.
Faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends are invited to celebrate Wichita State’s oldest surviving building.

AAron Davis nationally recognized as a Phrases Fellows by Beaumont Foundation & Aspen Institute
AAron Davis
AAron Davis, Community Engagement Institute, Center for Public Health Initiatives Director, was recently selected as one of 15 PHRASES (Public Health Reaching Across Sectors) Fellows from across the United States. This exciting new fellowship is a partnership of the de Beaumont Foundation and the Aspen’s Institute’s Health, Medicine and Society Program.
The fellowship is designed to recognize and support public health leaders in developing communication skills and strategies to frame public health messages in ways that resonate with other sectors (such as housing, education, health systems and businesses). The fellowship program will equip the fellows to forge cross-sector collaborations in their own communities and position them as mentors for other public health professionals looking to reach across sectors.
AAron’s career has included work in both government and private industry. He has worked previously a local public health department, but now works to assist and improve all areas of Public Health in the state of Kansas through his role at Wichita State University. He has Master’s Degrees in Public Administration and in Business Administration, as well as undergraduate degrees in Business Administration and Integrated Marketing Communications.
With more than a decade of experience in Public health, AAron is an advocate for advancing the Public Health 3.0 model in Kansas.

Tulip giveaway continues at Duerksen Fine Arts Center and Marcus Welcome Center
Giving tulips to the WSU community is a longstanding tradition, so you can have a piece of WSU in your yard. The tulip giveaway continues today (Thursday, April 25) at Duerksen Fine Arts Center and Marcus Welcome Center.
If anyone wants to donate canned goods when picking up tulips, we will provide blue containers and deliver to the Food Locker which supports WSU students, faculty and staff.
Lavender Graduation celebration set for May 2

Graduating Seniors are given their choice of rainbow or lavender cord to wear at their respective college graduation ceremony (pre-registration and attendance required).

Graduate School community event – Grad Students at the Ulrich
Come celebrate the near-end of the semester at a relaxing social with other grad students and faculty from 3-5 p.m. Friday, May 3, at the Ulrich Museum of Art.
Cosponsors Graduate School and the Ulrich Museum will supply good eats (heavy hors d’oeuvres, adult and soft beverages) at WSU’s nationally recognized modern and contemporary art museum. A wonderful summer exhibition will be on display in all galleries.

Join Tim and Gail Buchanan as they open their lovely new home for the 48th Homes in Harmony Tour from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at 1875 N. 159th Street East. Tickets are $15.
Proceeds are used to provide scholarships to music students at WSU and Friends University, and to make a generous contribution to the annual Kodaly Institute held at WSU in the summers. During the event, WSU School of Music professors Julie Bees and Leonid Shukaev will perform piano and cello selections at the home tour from 3-4 p.m., and Judith Fear (former WSU piano instructor) will perform piano selections from 4-4:30 p.m.
