Annual training on budgeting system today (Monday, April 29) to Friday, May 3
The time for submission of FY 2020 annual budget requests is fast approaching. If you are a Budget Officer or Review Officer, annual training on the budgeting system and process is required and will be held today (Monday, April 29) to Friday, May 3.
Sign-up for the training sessions by going to myWSU and enrolling through the myTraining link for the sessions titled “Fiscal Year Budget and TM1 Information.” We will also hold two open labs on Wednesday, May 8 and 15 to provide more targeted one-on-one training for those who may need additional assistance after attending one of the initial training sessions.
Planned dates for completion of the various phases of the budget process are outlined below. Please keep in mind these dates (except for the training) may fluctuate.
- April 29 – May 3 Budget and TM1 Training Sessions
- May 8 Open Lab
- May 15 Open Lab
- May 24 Final day for Budget and Review Officers to enter requests in the system
- May 31 Final day for Vice Presidents to review / enter requests in the system

General Faculty Meeting agenda for today (Monday, April 29)

Graduate School dean candidate visit today (Monday, April 29) and Tuesday, April 30
Rajalingam Dakshinamurthy, Interim Director, Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Austin Peay State University, will visit Wichita State University as a dean candidate for the Graduate School on Monday, April 29 and Tuesday, April 30.
Faculty, staff and students are invited to a public forum at 3:30 p.m. today (Monday, April 29) in 319 Rhatigan Student Center. Information is also available on the Academic Affairs website.
‘Search Exception’ changes to be implemented today (Monday, April 29)
Changes will be implemented to the process for search waivers, emergency hires, and promotions – referred to as “Search Exceptions” – today (Monday, April 29). The revised process is standardized for all areas of the University. Instructions have been created (found on the HR webpage) to provide guidance in completing the Search Exception Request Form and the overall process.
Human Resources will serve as the centralized point-of-contact for the process, including receiving the electronic submission of search exception requests and entering all information into PeopleAdmin.

Annualized Salary Spread for Academic Year 2019-20
For exempt nine / 10-month employees (faculty and UP) not currently on salary spread but interested in participating in this program, an agreement form must be signed. Salary spread payments for academic year 2019-20 will begin with the pay period that starts on Aug. 11, 2019 (pay date of Sept. 6, 2019). To exercise this option, please complete the nine / 10-month Annualized Salary Agreement form.
If you are currently on annualized salary spread, it remains in force from year-to-year unless you elect to discontinue it. To discontinue it, you must notify the Office of Human Resources in writing prior to July 3, 2019. Complete the cancellation form.
Nominations are due May 1 for 2019 Higuchi-Endowment Research Achievement Awards
There’s still time to submit nominations for the annual Higuchi-KU Endowment Research Achievement Awards. Late Distinguished Professor Takeru Higuchi and his wife, Aya, partnered with KUEA to create four awards that recognize individuals for their accomplishments in research, scholarship and creative activity.
Faculty from any Kansas Regents institution are eligible, and your assistance in identifying outstanding candidates is crucial. Winners receive $10,000 in support of research activities.

Holmes Museum of Anthropology to host spring 2019 exhibit openings today (Monday, April 29)
The Lowell D. Holmes Museum of Anthropology will host the spring 2019 exhibit openings from 2-5 p.m. today (Monday, April 29). The Museum Exhibition class has transformed the Jackman Gallery into “Journey Around the World,” featuring 11 different exhibit areas highlighting various artifacts, textiles and clothing from cultures around the world.
Associate Professor of Anthropology Jens Kreinath will give a talk about the Aleppo Exhibit at 5 p.m. in 117 Neff Hall.
On the second floor of Neff Hall will be the photo exhibit "Reimagining Aleppo through Peace and Pain." The photo exhibit was created by Associate Professor of Anthropology Jens Kreinath and museum director Rachelle Meinecke.
Kreinath created a photograph journal on a visit to Aleppo in 2010 during a time of peace. These photos starkly contrast the photos of photojournalist, Narciso Contreras's work of the bombings during the war for Aleppo in 2013-16.
There will also be a smaller accompanying exhibit entitled "Remembrance from Antakya to Aleppo." This exhibit displays photographs by Kreinath that capture moments of brief encounters with Boulos Yazigi, the Metropolitan Bishop of Aleppo, at the 2010 and 2012 celebrations of the St. Peter and Paul Festival in Antakya.
On April 23, 2013, Yazigi and his companion, Bishop John Ibrahim of the Syriac Orthodox Church, were abducted on a return trip from Antakya by an Aleppo-based battalion—with the driver reportedly killed. With his location still being unknown, the Greek Orthodox community in Antakya continues to commemorate its charismatic and cherished leader.
Registration for Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace Training is available
This Diversity in Action interactive training will highlight the benefits of diversity and inclusion in the workplace, social identities, recognizing and understanding microaggressions, introducing the matrix of oppression, understanding how to get past stereotypes and prejudices, addressing issues, as well as how and who to report them to.
This interactive training from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, in 266 RSC, is designed to shape your understanding of diversity and inclusion while providing an open forum for questions and concerns. Find out more about this Diversity in Action Program.

Startup Grind U event coming May 7
The last Startup Grind U event for the semester will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, in 265 RSC. The event is free. The guest speaker will be Christina Long, owner of CML Collective LLC, and the president / CEO of Create Campaign Inc. Passionate about building the community in Wichita and empowering urban entrepreneurs, she has launched initiatives to aid in launching, innovating, and excelling in their ventures.
Finals prep. It doesn’t have to be stressful.
Final exams and projects are often portrayed as stressful, but they don’t have to be. With the proper preparation, they can be stress-free. Some tips you can share with students include knowing where and when all their finals are scheduled, knowing what kinds of exams or assignments will be given in each class, getting the supplies they need in advance (blue books, pens/pencils, etc.), getting plenty of sleep and making changes to their work schedules to accommodate extra study time. This event is an Intro to Community & Social Practice class project, with support from the School of Art, Design and Creative Industries and the Ulrich Museum of Art.
WSU men's and women's tennis offers free tennis clinics on Wednesdays
The WSU men's and women's tennis programs will offer free tennis clinics for WSU faculty, staff and Innovation Campus employees at the Coleman Tennis Complex this spring.
The free Wednesday clinics will resume from noon-1 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday, April 24) and run indefinitely as long as there is interest.
These clinics are for all ability levels, from beginner to experienced. Even if you've never played tennis, give it a try. Rackets will be provided if you let Nick Taylor know ahead of time. RSVP to nicholas.taylor@wichita.edu.
Sign-up for CourseLeaf Training (CIM) Training
An additional training session has been added for the new CourseLeaf Curriculum (CIM) system. CIM is the new online curriculum change system replacing the current paper curriculum change forms. Any faculty, staff and administrators involved in the curriculum change process, submitting and approving curriculum change forms, etc., are encouraged to attend training.
A session will be held from 3-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 1. The training covers all content need for using CIM.

Graduate School community event – Grad Students at the Ulrich
Come celebrate the near-end of the semester at a relaxing social with other grad students and faculty from 3-5 p.m. Friday, May 3, at the Ulrich Museum of Art.
Cosponsors Graduate School and the Ulrich Museum will supply good eats (heavy hors d’oeuvres, adult and soft beverages) at WSU’s nationally recognized modern and contemporary art museum. A wonderful summer exhibition will be on display in all galleries.
Women in Tech: More Than a Talk
The conference, Women in Tech: More Than a Talk, aims to inspire, engage, and empower women in all stages of their career. Join us for an evening of micro-talks from local female leaders presenting on a variety of topics, covering STEM and beyond from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 2, at The WAVE, the newest downtown event venue, on 2nd and Saint Francis. There also will be networking opportunities within the context of a supportive community.
The WSU Institute of Innovation has partnered with ShiftICT for this event, and a Master’s of Innovation Design grad is the keynote speaker.

WSU students can use YMCA memberships during the summer
While Wichita State students await the opening of the new Steve Clark YMCA / Student Wellness Center on campus, they are already making extensive use of the nine other Greater Wichita YMCAs.
WSU students account for an average of about 25,000 visits to area YMCAs each month.
Wichita State’s YMCA, under construction at the corner of Mike Oatman Drive and Mid Campus Drive, is roughly nine months from completion. When finished in 2020, the YMCA will offer features, many connecting technology to fitness routines, unique to the building.
