WSU names Larisa Genin dean of Barton School of Business
Larisa Genin, associate dean of the School of Economics and Business Administration at Saint Mary’s College of California, has been named dean of the W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University, effective June 17, 2019.
“In Dr. Genin’s visits to Wichita this spring, and in discussions with those who have worked with her, we were impressed with her accomplishments, strategic approach, focus on student success, communication skills and vision for the Barton School,” said WSU Provost Richard Muma, who appointed Genin. “Faculty, staff, students and members of the business community who met her thought she would be an excellent fit for the university and the city.”
Muma said he has asked Genin to prepare to focus immediately on connecting the Barton School’s faculty and staff to WSU’s focus as an urban public research university by increasing enrollment opportunities and helping business and industry solve some of their most pressing issues.
Developing innovative curricular approaches and applied learning experiences for students, as well as raising money to support the Barton School programs, are additional priorities, Muma said.
Genin succeeds Anand Desai, who is retiring after four years as dean and 25 years in the Kansas public university system.
“I am very honored and excited to serve as the next dean of the Barton School,” Genin said. “I am confident that together as a team, we can take the school to unprecedented heights of excellence, with special emphasis on applied learning and research.”
“The WSU Foundation campaign’s tagline, ‘Shock the World,’ resonates with me,” Genin said. “I appreciate the donors who have provided strong financial support for a new business building, and I’m excited about working with students, faculty, staff and the business community to turn this vision into a launching pad for student success.”
In her role as associate dean at her current school, she provides leadership in the areas of strategic planning, accreditation, enrollment, marketing, curricular development, student experience and success, academic standards and alumni relations.
Genin has been instrumental in co-leading the development and implementation of the school’s five-year strategic plan, doubling undergraduate enrollment, redesigning academic programs, and strengthening the student experience.
She also successfully led the school’s efforts in obtaining and maintaining accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
Genin was a 2014-2015 participant in the American Council on Education Fellowship Program – a premier leadership development program focusing on preparing the next generation of senior leaders for the nation's colleges and universities.
Her scholarly interests focus on the areas of globalization, innovation, online marketing, personal branding and marketing education.
The Barton School of Business is home to the largest selection of AACSB-accredited programs in the state and is one of the few schools in the nation to have all of its undergraduate and graduate business and accounting programs fully accredited. Students have secured high-profile internships with companies such as Microsoft, Google, Koch Industries, the Mayo Clinic and the White House.

The President's Distinguished Service Awards and the unclassified professionals' Wayne Carlisle Distinguished Service Award will be presented during the Shocker Pride Celebration from 9-10:30 a.m. today (Thursday, May 9), in the Shirley Beggs Ballroom, Rhatigan Student Center.
Continental breakfast refreshments will be served. Black and yellow dress encouraged, and bring your Shocker spirit!

John W. Bardo Celebration of Life: ‘It’s a Great Day to be a Shocker’
Wichita State University will honor the life of late President John W. Bardo in a Celebration of Life today (Thursday, May 9) in the Rhatigan Student Center (RSC). Dr. Bardo, the 13th president of WSU, died March 12, after a long illness.
Exhibits featuring Bardo will be on display from 2-2:45 p.m. in Astor Lounge, outside of the Shirley Beggs Ballroom, on the third floor of the RSC.
The Celebration of Life program with video remembrances begins at 2:30 p.m. in the Shirley Beggs Ballroom. Formal remarks will start at 3 p.m. A live video feed will be available at that time.
Immediately following the program, an ice cream social will be held from 4-5 p.m. on the RSC east patio, lawn and Groover Lounge.
Airbus opens employee training to WSU community and more
Airbus is opening their employee training to WSU community and other local companies. Airbus held a meeting with 30 faculty and industry partners to measure interest in data analytics and also get input into planning on Tuesday, May 14. There was tremendous interest from all parties, and lots of talk about how this event should be the first of many data analytics days that feature different companies, different software solutions, etc.
The agenda includes three tracks of training on Tableau software –Tableau is free for all students and instructors. There will also be several case studies and speakers from different companies sharing how they use data analytics in their company. Several companies sponsoring the event in addition to Airbus, are Cargill, NetApp, Tableau, Altryx, Snowflake, Informatica, and Interworks.
Faculty panel to discuss ‘Venezuela in Crisis’ today (Thursday, May 9)
Panelists Dinorah Azpuru and Neal Allen of political science, and Rocio Del Aguila Carreno of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures, will discuss “Venezuela in Crisis,” from 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. today (Thursday, May 9), in 142 RSC. The event is free and open to the public, and sponsored by the Department of Political Science.

The Faculty Senate will meet from 3:30-5 p.m. Monday, May 13, in Shirley Beggs Ballroom, third floor, RSC. Key items to be discussed will include an update on committees reviewing policies on faculty workload and chairperson policy. Included in Senate Committee Annual reports are draft recommendations from the General Education Revision committee changes to the number of required General Education courses.

Art History Awards with Randall Griffey
In partnership with the Ulrich Museum of Art, the art history program in the School of Art, Design and Creative Industries presents the first annual Art History Awards from 5:30-7:30 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, May 10), at the Ulrich Museum of Art. This event celebrates the achievements of Wichita State art history students.
Award categories include outstanding individual research project, performance in art history courses and growth as an art historian. The Art History Awards also include a special recognition for teaching excellence by a Master of Fine Arts candidate in studio art. Randall Griffey will deliver the keynote address. Griffey has served as curator of modern and contemporary art for the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 2013.

Seeking volunteer Jump!Star performers this summer
Communities from New York to Kansas have been working with Jump!Star's creative director, George Ferrandi for the past 18 months building 12 large, lightweight illuminated sculptures made of wire and paper at this summer’s Symphony in the Flint Hills signature event Saturday, June 15, in the Flint Hills on Irma’s pasture near Bazaar, Kansas. Performers will have free admittance to this popular event.
We are seeking more than 100 participants as each sculpture requires eight-to-12 handlers. Participants are referred to as "dark matter".... do you want to be Dark Matter for an amazing, otherworldly evening experience on the beautiful, rolling Flint Hills? Of course you do!
- One full dress rehearsal on Friday, June 14, with the rest of the sculptures. (On-site in the Flint Hills. Details TBA.)
- Live performance - Two 20-30-minute sessions of processing with the sculptures after dark on Saturday, June 15th. (Rain date, Sunday, June 16)
The sculptures are very lightweight illuminated constructions, so not heavy to lift, but are basically a big paper bag we are taking to Tornado Town, so there may be some wind to deal with, in addition to gravity. We've been told the wind dies down after dark, so are counting on that!

Society of Decorative Painters to have conference and expo in Wichita
The international organization “Society of Decorative Painters” (headquarters in Wichita) will have their 47th Conference and Expo in Wichita Monday, May 13 to Saturday, May 18, at the Hyatt Regency. This is a week of painting classes and expo for artists and painters that paint in oil, acrylics, watercolor, mixed media and colored pencil.
One strong passion this organization has is community outreach. They have taken the task to paint new backpacks to be donated to St. Francis Ministries. These backpacks will go to children filled with first-night necessities when they are placed into foster care.

WSU announces spring commencement schedule, speakers
More than 2,400 students are eligible to participate in the 121st spring commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 18, at Wichita State University. Ceremonies will be held in Charles Koch Arena. Undergraduate and graduate degrees will be conferred in college ceremonies.
The public should be advised that security will be in place and plan additional time for screening by metal detector to enter the arena. Doors will open at 7 a.m. and remain open throughout the day.

There are several ways to connect with undergrads you think would make great graduate students. Sometimes all it takes is a little direction from a caring staff or faculty member, like you, to help in that decision process. You can connect with potential graduate students by:
Reaching out to them during class
- Promoting your program on social media
- Providing opportunities to connect with faculty, staff and graduate students
Above all, when reaching out to a potential graduate student, make sure they know that they will not be going through the application process alone! If available, offer resources through your department, specifically the graduate coordinator, or direct them to wsugradschool@wichita.edu for assistance on the application.
Your efforts in helping foster a culture of graduate learning and engagement in WSU graduating students is valued and appreciated!

Participants 60+ years of age needed for research study on the effects of a visual training program
Are you 60+ years of age? Do you want to improve your visual and cognitive functions?
The Visual Perception & Cognition Lab is looking for participants for research studies that investigate the effects of a visual training program. The research study involves about five, one-hour tests or training sessions that will be conducted on the WSU campus or WSU Shocker Studios on East Harry Street. Participants will be compensated with $120 for completing the study.
