University Excellence Awards today (Friday, May 10)
The University Faculty Awards will be held at 2:30 p.m. today (Friday, May 10), in 233 RSC. A reception will precede the ceremony at 2 p.m.
The University Faculty Awards recognizes faculty who are setting the gold standard for teaching, research and creative activity at Wichita State University. The Excellence in Teaching was established in 1964 by the University of Wichita Board of Regents, now known as the WSU Board of Trustees, to recognize superior teaching. Over time, additional awards with varying criteria have been established by the WSU Board of Trustees, Academic Affairs and Research Administration.
Engineering Open House today (Friday, May 10)
Now in its 64th year, the Engineering Open House is the WSU College of Engineering's annual celebration of the accomplishments of students and faculty and showcases senior design and research projects from across all engineering disciplines at WSU.
This year’s event will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, May 10, in the Experiential Engineering Building. Come and go anytime, engage with student project teams and view multiple lab demonstrations.
SEM Check-In Goal 3: Increase retention of degree-seeking underserved students
In the fall we reported our fall-to-fall retention rates which track specific cohorts of students over time. An equally important measure of retention, sometimes referred to as "grit," is term-to-term persistence.
The advantage of looking at persistence rates is that we are not restricted to a cohort’s entry term but can instead track all similarly defined students from term-to-term.

Policy changes are approved by President’s Executive Team
Two policy changes were approved by the President’s Executive Team: 3.16 Nepotism (update) and 3.56 / Rehire Eligibility (new policy)
3.16 / Nepotism: This policy is intended to provide clear direction to address situations in which Employees at Wichita State University (“University”) are involved in a Familial or Consensual Relationship where a conflict of interest and/or a power differential between Employees or between an Employee and a Student exists.
3.56 / Rehire Eligibility: The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines for rehire eligibility at Wichita State University.
Wichita State to host American championships
The Wichita State track and field program will host the American Athletic Conference outdoor championships, May 10-12, at Cessna Stadium.
In its second year in the American Athletic Conference, Wichita State will host the 2019 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The three-day meet will feature 12 women's teams and 10 men's teams.
Celebrate the dedication of ‘Shockers,” a new sculpture by Tom Otterness
Join us in celebrating the dedication of “Shockers,” a new sculpture by Tom Otterness to its renowned Martin H. Bush Outdoor Sculpture Collection. The sculpture is one of three new pieces entering the collection in the spring of 2019. Reveal and remarks start at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 12, at the south lawn of Duerksen Fine Arts Center. Reception to follow.

World Trade Council of Wichita to feature look at USMCA trade agreement
The World Trade Council of Wichita (WTCouncil) hosts World Trade Week on Thursday evening May 16, at Wichita Marriott Hotel, 9100 Corporate Hill Drive, with a special look at USMCA (U.S. Mexico Canada trade agreement).
Panel participants include representatives from Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The WTCouncil is part of the Center for International Business Advancement (CIBA) at the Barton School of Business. Program registration includes a social hour, dinner and panel discussion. A preliminary program is attached.

Openings posted for fall 2019 Recruitment Faculty Fellows
The Office of Admissions has openings for Recruitment Faculty Fellows for fall 2019, faculty who desire to be more engaged in the recruitment process. The fellows will work in partnership with the Office of Admissions to recruit undergraduate domestic students during the 2019-20 academic year, for students to enroll at Wichita State.
Nine awards are available at $2,500 apiece. The application deadline is Friday, May 17, and the notification date is Friday, May 31. Questions about applying should be directed to Aaron Hamilton at 978-3631 or aaron.hamilton@wichita.edu.

WSU’s Usha Haley is quoted in Fortune.com article

Frank Barton Distinguished Chair in International Business and Professor of Management Usha Haley was an expert source for a story in Fortune.com recently.
In the article “A Triple Threat to Consumers: China Tariffs Add to NAFTA Replacement Woes,” Haley said, “What companies have done is pass this onto consumers. She pointed to increased tariffs on washing machines but not on dryers. “Although washing machines have gone up in price, there is no need for dryers to go up in price,” Haley said. But manufacturers have raised prices on both.
Kouri Parcourse dedication to be held Tuesday, May 21
The WSU community is invited to join Sam and Jacque Kouri in honoring their son, Sammy Kouri Jr., at a dedication of the new Kouri Parcourse near the Heskett Center entrance at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, with a reception following.
A parcourse is an outdoor gym with exercise stations, open to the public. The new facility replaces a parcourse near Heskett funded by the Kouris three decades ago. Weather and age contributed to its decline over the years. The new parcourse, also funded through contributions from the Kouris, has eight fitness stations, three of which are accessible to both disabled and able-bodied individuals. It is built on a rubberized foundation.
Sam and Jacque Kouri have a long record of supporting Wichita State University, primarily in the arts and athletics. Although Sam Kouri is an alumnus of the University of Oklahoma, he and Jacque have committed themselves to helping Wichita State remain strong and responsive to students.
Sam Kouri, a retired surgeon, and Jacque, a community volunteer, are life members of the Fairmount Society, the WSU Foundation’s top giving club. He has served on the SASO board of directors, and she has served on the WSU Foundation's National Advisory Council, College of Fine Arts Advisory Board, and the Ulrich Museum Advisory Board.

WSU selected for first-generation student success
Wichita State University has been selected by the NASPA Center for First-Generation Student Success as one of 80 institutions who comprise the inaugural cohort of First Forward institutions.
WSU’s application was submitted by the First-Generation Coordinating Counciland highlights the increasing percentage of students attending Wichita State as well as the transformative work underway to make WSU a more student-ready campus. Our history of service to first-generation students includes our nine TRIO programs and four GEAR UP programs, services provided in both Academic and Student Affairs, and the solid communication about the assets brought to our campus by this special student demographic.

The 15th Annual Graduate Research and Scholarly Project (GRASP) Symposium was an awesome graduate student research fest!
Congratulations to all 116 graduate student presenters of 68 research posters who represented departments and programs from across the university and whose research covered wide-ranging topics. The event was a huge success. A special shout-out to GRASP award winners:

Participants 60+ years of age needed for research study on the effects of a visual training program
Are you 60+ years of age? Do you want to improve your visual and cognitive functions?
The Visual Perception & Cognition Lab is looking for participants for research studies that investigate the effects of a visual training program. The research study involves about five, one-hour tests or training sessions that will be conducted on the WSU campus or WSU Shocker Studios on East Harry Street. Participants will be compensated with $120 for completing the study.
