Opportunity to develop new First-Year Seminars coming July 10
After piloting First-Year Seminars (FYS) for three years, the faculty have approved requiring an FYS course for all first-time-in-college students as part of their general education experience starting in fall 2021. This is an exciting opportunity to add another best practice to our other student success strategies on campus.
Summer presents a good time for new course development. For those wanting to teach a seminar in fall 2020, we recommend you submit your course proposal to your department committee no later than Sept 30.
For tenure and non-tenure track faculty members interested in learning more about how to develop a first year seminar course, an Information Session is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday July 10, in 240 RSC.
Additional sessions will be scheduled in the future and announced in WSU Today.

New WSU research will help the Air Force fleet stay mission ready
The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory recently awarded WSU’s National Institute for Aviation Research a $23.5 million contract for modeling composite inspection and repair techniques for aircraft in active service.
The research will allow Air Force aircraft to remain mission-ready for longer periods and save repair costs over a span of decades.
Second Annual Kansas Prevention Conference to be held this October
The Prevention Initiatives team will be hosting the 2nd annual Kansas Prevention Conference Oct. 1-3, at the Wichita Hyatt Regency. The Kansas Prevention Conference hosts state and local professionals from the substance abuse prevention field and related disciplines.
This year’s theme is “Community Focused Future Minded.” There will be a keynote speaker as well as break-out sessions with opportunities to learn from and network with other prevention professionals. Hanover Research enrollment survey results
Each year, the Office of Admissions partners with Hanover Research to deploy a survey to students admitted to attend Wichita State. The survey is issued to both students who choose to enroll at WSU and those who don’t.
As part of the survey, students were asked to share three words that came to mind when they think of Wichita State. See the compiled results from that question in the word cloud above. Words appearing larger in size represent a higher frequency response from students.
NC3 announces new vice chairwoman to the NC3 Board of Directors

Michele Pugh, director of the Environmental Finance Center at Wichita State University, died on June 21, following a brief illness. She was 50.
Services will be held on July 7 in her hometown of Lima, Ohio.
Pugh was director of the Environmental Finance Center (EFC) since 2016. Prior to joining the EFC, she worked as an environmental engineer and held several positions with Flint Hills Resources (2007-16), Koch Industries (2003-07) and Monsanto Company (1992-2003). Pugh graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Ohio University in 1992 and master’s degree in environmental engineering from Tulane University in 1999.
Pugh was an excellent seamstress, but one of her favorite hobbies was bookbinding. Her eBay store, Leila Ebenezer Handmade Books, was named after two of her beloved cats.
She is survived by her two sisters and brother, Lisa Pugh Zangmesiter, Sharon Pugh Klug, and Scott Pugh. Information on sending flowers and memorial donations will be updated on the EFC’s website.

Student Body President Kitrina Miller to appoint Vice President Michael Bearth as acting president
On June 29, Student Body President Kitrina Miller will leave the country as part of an applied learning experience in the Kampala, Uganda area. As a social work major, Miller is gaining practice within her field by taking advantage of this opportunity. This educational learning experience corresponds with Wichita State’s strategic plan goal No. 1: “Guarantee an applied learning or research experience for every student by each academic program.”
President Miller is taking this experiential learning opportunity to volunteer through the International Volunteer Headquarters. She will work with a Women’s Education and Empowerment Project by educating women and girls on Gender-Based Violence and Human Immunodeficiency Virus, while also assisting with economic strengthening projects and providing support for children.
Miller said: “I’m really looking forward to working with the women of the Kampala area and providing support in any way I can. While I hope I can make an impact in the lives of these women, I know I have so much to learn from them and their culture.”
An executive order will be released today (Wednesday, June 26) placing Vice President Michael Bearth as acting president. Michael Bearth will be appointed as acting president until Miller’s return on Aug. 7.
On leaving Bearth as acting president, Miller states: “I trust Michael to ensure that SGA continues the work we have set out to accomplish.”
Sponsorships help support professional development for youth economic and financial literacy
The Kansas Council for Economic Education has received financial sponsorships from Koch Industries, the Koch Center for Leadership and Ethics and State Farm for their 2019 summer professional development events at Wichita State.
The first event, the Financial Fitness Extravaganza, began yesterday (Tuesday, June 25) and continues today (Wednesday, June 26). It will provide content knowledge and lesson materials for personal finance teachers. The second event, Real-Life Applications for the Social Studies, will be held July 8 and 9, and will prepare social studies teachers to teach economics.
